My 3rd concert ever. My 18th birthday. Easter Sunday. Eddie climbing into the rafters above the stage of the fabulous Fox theatre during a prolonged jam before the last verse in Once and throwing down an effigy of himself into the crowd… unforgettable, amazing show maybe the best I’ve ever seen… also the day Kurt Cobain was shot dead although not found for two more days.

I was there! I was 20 years old and my father had a business relationship with Ticket Master. The ticket sales were to be announced in the radio, so I asked him if he could get some info you know. He was shot down, and told me the bad news. A week later a kind man I never met pulled my father aside and said his job would end if he told a soul....and said at 3:00 that day the announcement would be made...99X...remember them? He called me at work, I got an ear ache, left work, and was at Turtles... at 2:30...before they knew! I remember the Oh shit moment the employees had when the announcenent flashed on their kiosk. No BS, cars were piling in the lot so fast, that place was packed in 15 minutes! I had 2 friends with me, only 2 tickets per person...I bought my Dad a ticket, and 6 of us saw Pearl Jam at the Fox for 18 dollars a ticket! I almost felt bad for those who didnt get to go, almost. It was the pinnacle of my youth, and the best show I have, and will ever see in my life! I saw Pink Floyd, The Stones, Metallica, NIN, and although The Floyd is definately a hell of a show, the energy that place has that night was Epic! They took forever to come out, but did 4 fuing encores man! I am 49 now and still get goosebumps listening to this! I was there man! I have only met one person that was there. It was the one time I drew a royal straight flush. I hope yall enjoyed this little bit. Thank You PJ for the best night of my youth!

This is the absolute peak of this band. 91-93 is amazing.. but just the intricate additions in their live performances and their energy, the band members at technical peak yet still greater than the sum of their parts... so tight yet not lacking in intangible human qualities... Dave's firing was like popping a balloon. The rock juggernaut we all fell in love with had been neutered. This concert here is as good as a band can get.

quick story: i was 23, had just dropped out of college in florida and relocated to atlanta. was sleeping on a friend's couch, had landed a job waiting tables at a restaurant. had no car. after a saturday night shift, i walked up out of the local subway train station next to the glorious fox theatre and was absolutely floored at how hard the place was rocking and how clear the sound was.... couldn't exactly tell who was playing, so i turned the corner and saw from the marquee that it was pearl jam. i was a fan, but not a super fan at the time. the next morning (easter sunday, i think) i was working the morning breakfast shift. i told my story to a colleague who then informed me that the boys were playing again that night and that the show was going to be nationally broadcast on the radio -- a big deal back in the day -- i made a promise that i would take all the money i earned from the morning shift and see if i could scalp a ticket... i invited my friend to do the same... he said he wouldn't waste his dough on the show but listen on the radio.... luckily for me, it was a busy shift, and i bagged more than $100. so, i took the train home, cleaned up, and went back that night and landed one single ticket front row off center stage left in the balcony (a GREAT SEAT in that venue) and, well, the rest is history. an absolutely blistering show... 2 hours of a band at their power peak in full load gear. They opened the show with just a ton of candles lighting the stage, it was a great first track and then it was game on...IMO, the five set run in the concert that took it next level historic was: Go, Animal, Garden, State of Love and Trust, and Black.... my friend regretted his decision instantly and all he could do was stare at me the next day in disbelief. (like, I can't believe you--who have no reason to blow any money and are living on a couch--knew it was the right call and i didn't.)

@@steve6513 Only bc of inertia. It took maybe 2 albums after Dave left for their greatness to fully evaporate. But there was already a stark contrast between Vitalogy and No Code. The production went from world class to muddy guitar tones and drums that sounded like a garage band demo. Might have been intentional, but they didn't really pull it off as they just continued to sink into obscurity and irrelevance in the ensuing years.

And it was broadcast on the radio in many cities... but was from the audio cassette days... and b/c it was recorded and broadcast to the Chicagoland area (89.1 FM) but available also in bootleg format ( @ a SoundBoard Quality level and cuz it was broadcast "officially" and before the "official bootleg" days began around the time of the 2000 European tour) Well, 7-11-95 @ Soldier Field is easily the GOAT for me. And coming up right after the GD had played the venue and had left their stage behind (and also was Jerry Garcia's last show) so based on those factors is a great start regardless, but BEING THERE in person.... greatest show these eyes have ever seen and of any band so far!! Beg to differ only b/c I was in attendance at Soldier Field in '95! But I agree completely that Release as an opener gets it into a GOAT category right off.... and the intensity of around the 3 min mark and the beastly baritone and power Ed had during those early and mid 90's... unparalleled! I always loved Dave A cuz of Unplugged... but if they ended the band after he left.... I'd be crying still!! But I'm not a lil' bitch, and it isn't how it happened... with no Ed there is no PJ, but a loss of other members might have been the ebd of an era as well!! This concert pretty much sums up why Pearl Jam is such a great live band. They never play the same setlist twice and while they have about ten killer songs that they play at every show, you really never know what you are going to hear. This was a big national broadcast that most bands would kill for, and Eddie and the boys played most of the hits in the first hour, assuming that it would only be broadcast for a short time. "Well the radio stopped playing us so I guess we will EFF around now", ripping into the second live version of "WMA," and early "Betterman" and several others that were unknown at the time. Good thing the radio didn't cut away, we all would have missed a legendary show!

Played it back afterwards only to discover the recorder was broke. Then about a year or so later they brought it out on a 3 disc boxset. I was so made up. Took ages to get all three, because the third had to be imported. Had it for years but as time went by it got dog eared and scratched discs etc. This has to be the best of best gigs they did. I THINK this is the concert where there is video. When I was at PJ 20 they had an exhibit with alllll kinds of amazing PJ memorabilia from over the years including Ed's jackets, typewriters, notebooks, etc. You weren't allowed to take in cameras/phone cameras...and on a screen this concert was playing on video. The band never released it. To me it's the best show ever played.

Definitely was a tremendously great show!! Wow! What a fucking nite!! Great covers, WMA and The Real Me tags onto Daughter... I could go on and on

I was at a Smashing Pumpkins show in Biloxi MS on April 8, 94, the day they found Cobain's body. I had been in a car driving from New Orleans listening to mixtapes all day and didn't hear the news until I was in the stadium. BIlly was on fire with emotion and more angsty than normal... came out for an encore of Mayonaise wearing a cardigan like the ones Kurt made famous... someone uploaded the show to YT a few years back.

Yea I had this bootleg recorded off the radio as a youngster. A super setlist. My favorite time period was Binaural Tour era I think fron a tecnucal pov, how the band sounded,and they wrre tight ib 2000. 2003 was good too. But late 2000 shows were on point.
@chrisjones5851

I dont know what that means. I went to Towson State College in MD. I liked when Mr. Stone had the richbacher and it was creamy on the US tour so much in 2000. My very first concert to see them live was in 2000. The eleco/acoustic in 2000 was swapped out in 2003. The vocals were far superion in 2000 prior to Vedders goat bah he tends to add to too much in 2003. I am so sick of 10 and 5 against one, and Vitalogy and No Codes constanly being on the radio. Funny now No Code is played hardly at all, but Given to Fly is on all the time. Computer playlisted replaced humans. I really liked this band when I Was younger. May the Lord God and His Spirt be with you.

Interesting fact. This version of better man is the version used on Vitalogy. Eddie vedder recorded the first verse chorus and second verse in the studio then the live version was cut in.
@sampats89
@sampats89 2 жыл бұрын
That's wrong. The band cut and were recording this for vs initially but decided it didn't fit well on the heavy album. The drums in the studio version don't kick in until the second chorus, the tempo and dynamics are different and the studio version has a string section. This is my favourite version of the song by a long way

And especially because PJ were self-aware enough to know how BIG the band had already become... and Cobain would be gone in less than a week, so no Nirvana anymore... can you say "pressure??" And I'm so glad they kept their shit together!! And have remained level headed and continue to create amazing art... even if it ain't a brand new record... if you get to attend a show, you'll never be the same!! #facts

For me, born in '78 and so 13 in 1991... It's been a helluva long, strange trip for me... but a fan has to listen from the start to the finish to try and catch the vibe of what was going on... and then the random Ed banter or "fun facts" were always something that I immediately enjoyed and realized the value of, and after seeing MTV Unplugged (still have my original VHS tape in a box in the basement with the words "MTV Unplugged" written on it even) lol. I knew that this band were "my guys!" Even now, 30 fucking years later!! GOAT in so many ways!!

@@coopebe10 Truth that homie! I saw them first in Lauderdale in 96, at some baseball stadium. TWENTY FIVE thousand people filled every inch of that place, with the stage up behind the center field wall. Normal capacity was supposed to be like 8000 people lol, so it was pushing the seems. But the energy that night… it was BEYOND electric and everyone was so positive and excited. Especially with Hurricane Josephine bearing down on us all, and Eddy saying “Josephine, Josephine… leave us the fuck alone” lol. I was still young enough to hang in center field, constantly avoiding mosh pits and giving my boy’s girlfriend the longest damn piggy back ride ever… with her stank ass cooter on my neck lol. Then saw them years later in Tampa from a badass box sweet… but it was NOTHING like ‘96. I’ll always remember those times
