@monkface
@monkface 4 жыл бұрын
@@andrewbazar3302 well let me clarify that when I say I was there I meant I was living in the same house when this all happened. I'm not 100% certain in that I didn't follow the whole process but I'm reasonably certain that he received the tape (which I used to own and foolishly loaned away only to never see it again), but it just had the music/arrangement and he came up with the words and the melody. I remember backing my car out of the driveway and he came out and asked if I was going to be home because he was going to be doing a little recording later and I informed him I was going to work so no problem. I of course had no idea that he was recording the songs that ended up on that tape. None of us really knew quite what was going on really just that he was auditioning for Morher Love Bone essentially!

This is a copy of the original demo tape made by stone, jeff, and mike that they used to find a vocalist and a permanent drummer. They asked Matt Cameron to drum on it for them and then they sent it around to other musicians like Jack Irons as an example of their music. It was just instrumentals with no vocals. Eddie Vedder wrote lyrics and melody and recorded his vocals over the instrumentals and sent it back to them for his audition to join the band. This particular tape in the photo is the cassette you got with the rerelease of Ten in the limited edition deluxe collectors box set. Whether it’s a faithful copy of how the original cassette looked I don’t know. The tape they show in the PJ20 movie looks totally different. I would imagine the band made several copies of the tape they got back from Eddie for working copies as they rehearsed. Also the tape Ed got from them with just instrumentals would’ve looked differently than the tape he recorded and sent back to them.
@loud_laughter
@loud_laughter 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point. It probably was a different tape that was sent back to them in order to maintain the instrumental, copy, or have a safe copy. But it was pretty common at the time for musicians, especially vocalist to have a Four track recorder that Eddie would have used to record directly onto the original tape And easily add a little reverb or chorus to his voice. I had one of these devices back in 1992 that my friends and I would mess around with. Very simple to use. So I think you’re probably right that a person like Eddie Vedder would have enough foresight to not use the original Cassette that he received from Jack irons, but he would’ve had to dub a second tape in order to record his vocals on top of it, and that’s just another annoying step that most musicians probably would not take. They just would’ve Recorded onto the original cassette by popping it into the deck and pressing record, and, like I said, turn a couple of knobs to make the voice blend better.
@loud_laughter
@loud_laughter 2 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure Siri translated everything. I just spoke correctly, I didn’t bother reading it. So sorry for any typos. I will add this: a friend of mine met Eddie Vedder at his home in 1996 in Seattle. Eddie carved his initials into my friends guitar, and it was in the same handwriting stylings as what is on the image of this tape. Sad for my friend that the guitar was later, stolen from him, but it goes to show that Eddie was artistic in every way, and he would certainly communicate back to Stone and Jeff in an artistic way, using a sharpie and white out and using nice handwriting is the sort of minimalist creativity that matches my friends experience. And do we have images of the tape that was shown by Cameron Crowe in the documentary? And if so, would each side look significantly different? And lastly, does anybody know the four songs that were on that tape? I get different reports all the time. Was it alive, oceans, foootsteps, why go?
@leinonibishop9480
@leinonibishop9480 2 жыл бұрын
@@loud_laughter I believe it was alive, once, footsteps (because Eddie wrote those as a trilogy) and black, which was called ‘E Ballad’ at the time. Eddie has said in an interview that he wrote the trilogy and sent it back and then on the plane ride to Seattle he wrote the lyrics to Black. Also having Eddie’s hand writing on this tape doesn’t mean it’s the original tape. He could’ve written on one specifically to be copied and used for the rereleased deluxe box set. Him and Jeff are all over the artwork of all their albums and I don’t know why the box set would be any different.

I imagine PJ listening to this demo and being amused by how great/corny this "singer" was. As great as Eddie is, we have to admit the guy during that time had all that family shit going on deep inside that turn him into a very cheesy writer. Like he needed to take that out in order to become a better songwriter. Ironically, his best songs were written during that time. Music has no logic at times
