So surreal to think that Matt Cameron himself lent his talent to these original demos - so technically, he was the very first drummer for Pearl Jam.

An old comment, but to add detail, on this track Cameron wasn't available so it is Chris Friel from Mike's previous band Shadow

I love the slow lazy feel that this original version has. Its so mellow yet it is packed with so much power. Eddie's lyrics however give it an otherworldly sound and feel the way only Eddie can do.

i cant believe this is the heart of the song, what they made without eddie, how awesomely eddie put in the lyrics and how insanely good these songs sound without the lyrics as well...i see the band in a completely different light now, how strong they are/were without eddie having come yet...i feel stone/jeff/mccready arent well known to be such huge contributors

This had to be written in that short period after Andy’s death. How do you go from Mother Love Bone ( who we love ) to this masterpiece? Even instrumentally it’s on another level. The composition, the voicings, the lack of a real bridge, and that haunting melody… Thank you Stone

Hey, oh Sheets of empty canvas Untouched sheets of clay Were laid spread out before me As her body once did All five horizons Revolved around her soul As the earth to the sun Now the air I tasted and breathed Has taken a turn Oh and all I taught her was everything Oh I know she gave me all that she wore And now my bitter hands Chafe beneath the clouds Of what was everything Oh the pictures have All been washed in black Tattooed everything I take a walk outside I'm surrounded by Some kids at play I can feel their laughter So why do I sear Oh, and twisted thoughts that spin Round my head I'm spinning Oh, I'm spinning How quick the sun can, drop away And now my bitter hands Cradle broken glass Of what was everything All the pictures had All been washed in black Tattooed everything All the love gone bad Turned my world to black Tattooed all I see All that I am All I'll be Yeah I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star In somebody else's sky But why Why Why can't it be Why can't it be mine

God this sound is so.... amazing, pure and deep, that acoustic sound with a low amount of distortion gives it also a feeling of a strong and powerful emotion, something that overcomes the feeling of softness. Which is just beautiful.
