I was lucky enough to have been born and raised in Seattle, growing up as a teenager in the 90's and we were so spoiled. The fit of the day was any sort of purple shirt with a green flannel over the top. Then a zip up hoodie with any band of the time. From the local bands to the top billing. Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Mother Love Bone (RIP Andy Wood Stardog Champion), Soundgarden. All of them. It was cool to be whatever you wanted. Always good times.

Not a lot of people realize that the “little shake” with his head after the lyrics “all I taught her was everything.” Is actually him getting pissed off at himself for messing up the next line. He knew right then he was supposed to say “I know she gave me all that she wore,” but instead accidentally skipped forward to, “how quick the sun can drop away.” You can see it with his eye roll as he shakes his head, as if he’s cursing himself. That to me is what makes this performance one of the greatest ever. 9 out of 10 people didn’t even realize one of the greatest performances ever had a screw up error in it, because his professionalism covered it up so well that it went virtually unnoticed. A lot of artists would have stalled in the moment.

Eddie Vedder was truly in a class of his own among grunge singers. His voice has so much more texture and technique than most of the other singers from around that time. Obviously, people always joke about how they can't understand his lyrics when he sings lol but his voice is just beautiful to listen to. I think that's a big part of the reason why they got so much bigger than a lot of other grunge bands from that time. This song is hands down my favorite one of his and especially this performance. It's so hauntingly beautiful and heart breaking. Every time I hear it now I go back to that first real heart break I went through from breaking up with my first love.
