Today I'm reviewing the Pearl Mimic Pro! Possibly the best drum module I've ever used.

There’s some noise on low velocity hits with some of the sounds
SSD4-5 were recorded on tape using vintage consoles, preamps and mics, some of the samples may have audible noise on softer velocities if you have Dynamics fader in Triggering Settings Curves tab set to low values. The noise is not considered a problem. It’s typical of samples recorded on tape because of the nature of the process. It’s part of the analog vibe and warmth in an instrument’s sound.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate your videos, they are informative And not too difficult to follow for us low tech guys like myself. I started off with a roland TD 17 KVX. Then I bought a gilbrater Chrome three sided drum rack. I have since bought a couple of 12 inch Roland toms. I have substituted a drum tech 18 inch hand hammered bass drum, 13 inch hand hammer snare , 8 inch hand hammered Tom, 10 inch hand hammered Tom and a 13 inch hand hammered floor Tom all by drum tech. Not to mention an ATV large cymbal with holes in it and another ATV 10 inch splash. For drum module I currently have the Roland 17 that came stock with the drum set And before I purchased all these additional items I also bought a Alisis strike drum module because I wanted the ability to add on to my kit and the role and 17 module does not have any extra outputs and it’s taken up by the extra crash cymbal. My Alisis strike module is still New in the box and I am thinking about selling it because it is not compatible with my drum tech toms. Everything I have bought has not been opened or tried out yet because I will be moving soon and want to keep everything neat and tidy. If I had it to do over again I would have just bought a really nice drum tech set and not piece it together all a cart which is more expensive like I have done. I also have some QSC powered speakers and subwoofer to power this beast!!! I watch your comparison video between the pearl mimic pro and the Roland 50. I still can’t decide and both are pretty expensive and the price is not really an issue at this point. Do you think I should hang onto the alesis strike module ? I will be taking a loss on it at this point and the only reason I would keep it would be for extra triggers.

Great video my friend. I have been using the Mimic for over a year and it is awesome. If you use this thing live or in the recording studio, one of the very best features is having the dual outputs. You can send all the drums individually to the sound sound guy clean and keep your headphone mix the way you like it. When I play live I send up to 16 separate channels to the house mixer and allow the sound guy the freedom to control the drum mix and effects. Then I'll route the house monitor signal to the aux input on the Mimic with or without the drums( mostly without) in the house monitor mix. With this set up I can now mix the Aux in with the headphone out put as my monitors. This gives me the freedom to control my monitor mix. I either use my in ear monitors or run a cable to a standard monitor and I get to control how much Drums I get in my monitor mix. pretty much I control what I here and the sound guy gets to freely mix as he pleases. That's just a little thing I do that works for me. I love My Mimic.

FINALLY! An electronic module for drummers who want QUALITY ACOUSTIC sounds but have to keep volumes to a minimum, or wish to layer their acoustic heads with a bigger sound. Im hoping to find one of these used in new condition. I want to internally trigger acoustic heads, and hide the wires.... while using REAL cymbals. Then adjust microphone/trigger ratios until I can get the desired tones for recording. THIS THING SOUNDS AMAZING....

I just picked up a Mimic Pro about a month ago as an upgrade to my 13 year old TD20X, I'm still getting to know the features and how to get the best sounds out of it. One thing I just figured out this last week that you referenced at the end of this video, is that Roland does have a group of one-shot percussion samples that you can download from their MP firmware page. There's over 140 world percussion samples in the download that they provide for free. It appears that they are doing a good job of providing updates for free, such as a Library and Kit update just last year that improves overall sounds and adds a bunch of new kits, all for free.

Thanks for the video. The Mimic looks very good. I mostly like the advanced trigger settings, especially that piezo configuration mode. The sounds are definetly the best. It really is a great competitor for the TD-50.

Hey Justin, Great review as always! I consider myself pretty knowledgeable and try to educate myself on all of the modules that I purchase but I must say that I found it very frustrating working with Pearl Mimic Pro. For a new owner I found the set up was very frustrating. It was tough trying to dial in all the settings and creating your own kits. I could never find that sound I was looking for and it was also frustrating having to set and reset the velocity settings among other things. Obviously since I bought this module twice no one can accuse me of trashing this Module. Lord knows I really wanted to like it. Who knows after another update I just might buy it again and give another chance especially after Justin's Tutorial Video. 👍

For those who can't afford (yet) this amazing module , there's still a nice option that I have found very enjoyable: SSD5 using a DAW , in my case FL Studio 20.5 It's amazing how you can twic and add effects using the variety of pluggins these softwares offer. Get a nice Laptop , a decent audio interface and you're good to go. I can almost mimic every sound signature and record myself to improve my tempo and chops. Using Roland TD25 , M Audio 2x2m AI and Dell 14700 16gb.

Great review. i have the Pearl Mimic Pro and it is really the best module. Period. If you need some electronic sounds, Rolands are better, but you have the option to import one shot samples in Mimic.

and its worth mentioning that most electronic kit sounds are just one shot samples anyways. Now the more advanced melodic stuff that triggers songs and or a different sample each time you hit the drum then yeah that's not gonna work. But you can do a 808 or 909 kit in there no problem. And the downloadable electronic kit sounds made with its own internal library are amazing for using real acoustic samples. Really shows the power the module has in shaping sound.

I like the focus on drum sounds in this product; for those who want to bring in samples then there should be an optional route but it is, after all, a drum module. Those choices of dynamic settings give those who want to fine-tune their kit a high degree of control. I like the multi-mic samples, initially off the shelf works but if you want explore then soundalike options abound. Your typical additional in-depth info on the analogues puts your review way ahead of a mere list of statistics and menus.

I’m a plug and play guy and I really love the Roland digital pads. That is why I have the TD-50 instead. I’d love to have those sounds instead but I make it work. Good job Pearl!

Td50 pretty solid trigger wise out of the box, but to get the best sounds, it takes a while. I love it but the sounds are not plug and play.

This is the best review of not just a drum module, but of virtually anything else on YT. Thanks for putting the time in. LOVE the cymbals and kick drums on PMP. BUT still not down with the majority of the snares and toms. Question: If the compression is dialed off and you add more ambient sound do they sound more authentic and less processed? Ie more resonance and depth (less “spongy” if you will)? It would be great to see an example of taking a tom and showcasing the mic adjustments and ambience settings along those lines.

I happen to have one of these. Dunno why or how but based on my purchase history, it was a recent acquisition. This review is most timely. I initially thought navigating the trigger drop-down menu was a nightmare but then realize it scrolls differently than how I expected. You're supposed to drag, not swipe. Some may like the bass drum sounds, some may not. Especially producers who may want an isolated bass drum sound to work with. I can hear the snare x-talk when you hit the bass drum, which on an acoustic kit you get. That's actually kinda cool that they implemented that into the sound...makes for a very realistic sound and immersive playing experience. When you jam, you start to forget that you are on an acoustic kit, if the drums feel good, and the one I played on was very good. The price tag was something that I was not too impressed with though, running at over 10k. Yeah that was fun, but I can't justify that cost. But I like watching the technology advance. I'm curious what the next 5-10 years will bring. If you have a direct out for every pad, you can have your volumes maxed out and it won't matter to the engineer because he can adjust at the input stage on the FOH mixer. Not all modules can do this, but all the top ones worth buying. Even the older Roland TD10 has this capability.

So I'm moving up from a td11 and I'm on the fence for a td17 50 or this mimic pro, snare drum sounds are most important and this Pearl mimic seems to have the best sounds, very expensive though.

I noticed that under "Trigger Settings", Trigger presets, that the menu is different than mine, I have the 1.0.8.24 version. I am I missing an up date, did GC sell me a demo or something? The trigger preset screen on mine is very sensitive and the trigger type's/ options are very small, (font). Good work as usual Justin, looking forward to the next one....

We are far away from what is technically possible such as true multi-sensor technology, increased sampling frequency, improved algorithms for sound generation, expanded midi protocol, etc. It would be great if a drum module would be true open architecture and fully programmable by the user.

I didn't want to watch this review because I just got a td50, but obviously being a drumhead I have to watch it, the mimic sure sounds much better, but I still think the roland td50 pips it for me, I look at screens all day, phones, tablets, computer etc, the roland module is a welcome rest bite from the screen world. Those hihat sounds in the mimic are impressive, its certainly a part of the td50 sounds I don't like, ive tried a few things to get a decent hihat, none of them sound as good as what im hearing from your demos. Layer in samples into your instruments to get the hat sound you want. I've got a few solid hats I've built in the 50. Good stuff. I had a Mimic, sold it. 50 is.betyer in many ways, especially triggering and sound building.

Justin what is the microscopic lag you are mentioning when you're doing certain things. What things? Are you talking about navigating or playing? The latency is good at 2 ms detect time for certain pads, shouldn't be a playing issue.

It has two mixers, one for headphones and one for master outs. It takes up the whole screen when you access either and you can use your finger or double tap and use the data wheel.

Hi Justin, I have two questions relating to the Pearl Mimic Pro that I would be extremely grateful if you could please answer. 1. You mentioned that you can add a second brain to operate as a slave to the Mimic Pro to accommodate more inputs or is there another way to deal with this? 2. Can this brain accommodate hihats with two inputs(HH & HHCtrl) and can it accommodate a ride cymbal with two input(Bell & Edge)? I am just trying to find a way to connect my roland kit that has two kick drums, two hihats, two snares, six toms, one ride and six cymbals.. Thank you very much, Colin

I have had Alesis dt10 running drum software on laptops for 6 years I now have a DT17 but find the software and laptop is much better sounding, I love the way Roland cymbals trigger 2 sounds from single-zone cymbals Justin will I get the same kind off triggering (two sound from single one RPS cord )on the mimic?

It would be interesting to see a Mandala Drum used with this module but I don’t think the Mandala works directly with Drum Modules and relies on a computer & it’s proprietary software

Justin, I have been searching the internet and can not find many videos of drummers using edrums like the Mimic, Strike or TD17 drumsets live with full bands. It is always some drummer playing by himself in a controlled environment with headphones. It is even harder to find drummers using software and computers with live bands. Do you have an opinion on this? Is it a lack of stability issue?

Absolutely love it. But again, is it as good as a Roland TD-17, plus an Alexis Strike, plus a 2box drumit three? I mean it costs as much as these three modules alltogether. The feature that really stands out, is the nice touch screen. Anyway I am really thankful for every competition, and new ideas in the market. Looking forward to see how other brands will respond to this. I guess they are forced to shorten their release cycles. At least, thats what I hope. And as always, thank you for this nice review :-)

I asked this, because with the mentioned modules one has: 1. good stuff out of the box (TD-17) 2. many possibilites for editing and layering sounds, as well as physical faders (Strike) 3. compatibility to almost every pad or trigger, as well as the possibility to import sounds from software packages (Drumit 3) It's not plainly visible, which advantages the Mimic Pro module has in contrast, especially at a price that equals the other three modules combined. Maybe you can clarify?

@OB Joyful ​I think you make some excellent points. I think the TD-17 probably has some of the neat features of the TD-50. Strike just seems too much like a toy. Drumit 3 just sounds choppy and not that great and pales in comparison to the Mimic. I like your TD-17 idea as an alternative

I think that a combination of the Mimic and Gewa would be the best module ever made. Gewa has some pretty awesome features, but it's much inferior to Mimic as far as sound quality - at least from what I saw on your "First impressions" video. Great review, btw. Have a great weekend, man :)

I had the TD50 but sold it and bought a used TD30 module on e-bay. That's my favorite, but its all subjective to your own ears and the features you want. And I also run Superior Drummer 3 and EZ drummer 2 thru it. I found a Guitar Center that had a Mimic on display and tried it, but didn't like it as much as the Roland.

I think the answer depends on what you need. If you want acoustic sounds and don't mind actually learning how to use the studio tools provided to you to create new sounds there isn't any competition for the mimic. There isn't a single module that is sampled as deeply as it is. The TD50 has more variety but it trades sound and audible realism for low latency and triggering realism. Its a jack of all trades. Where the mimic is the leader in its class and really just focuses on doing one thing and doing it well. I personally have never heard the TD50 in person or on a recording and felt it sounded convincing. It always shows its cards as being a synthesizer. Where as I don't think most people would ever be able to listen to a properly set up mimic and pick it out as edrums in a blind listening test.

Great Justin we Can actually see 👀 we all hate the tiny screens. but can we add a Roland VH14 or digital pads ? can we add our preferred VST of choice ? If no this could be obsolete in the not near future There are so many great VST software drums out there and to only have 1 choice to me is a shame When a piece of equipment breaks new ground they expect us to go into zombie throw your money away mode This is not an option to those of us who thankfully are still in control of our minds that's why the Roland Vh14 is not on my radar simply because it will not improve my ability to play drums enough to chuck away so much hard earned cash

really in-depth overview and well done, however, for 'auditioning' the sounds, it would have been really useful to hear a full decay of each hit - too much playing, and not enough opportunity to hear nuance of single hits - for me to be able to properly assess the unit for my use. (I'm not saying that you shouldn't play fills, rolls, etc. - You should, but ALSO, you should have let us hear the sounds as single hits)

@@fatupperdick2772 You don't need any of the things you mention, least of all audio over USB. It's horrendous, distorts easily and converts badly. Any $49 controller has USB 2.0. I own a TD-50 and would never use the audio over USB. Not until you get to the 2k range will you get MIDI IN. Record with MIDI, remix and swap out kits with the module. Have more versatility than you could ever have recording 18 tracks of static audio. Let the module be alive and playback your performance with MIDI. The screen is almost too big now for a module and the only FX you need is delay. Get a cool outboard delay unit and run individual outputs for Ride and kick or hat and snare or a few toms through it. You've got compression, eq, reverb, and gorgeous rooms and mic placement already in an acoustic sounding module. Phasers, chorus etc. would sound awful. That said a multi FX update is highly likely. I am going to get the Mimic II in 3 years too but I could spontaneously combust before that. There's not much more to be done with this module and it is a very young module as far as it goes. It's open architecture makes it unique and updatable. Look at the advancements already.

Good review. I had one and sold a while back. The boxes it do not check for me are. 1. Only 28 velocities. 2. Can't import VST so you are stuck with sounds in module. 3. Only one shot import, so machine guns. 4. No software editor. 5. Analog only pads. Maybe if they add some of those features other flagship's have, I will give it another look. Until then, it's #3 in my book behind Strike and TD50.

Those 28 velocities are still better than Roland because they were used in real studio Multi platinum albums whereas Roland was not. SSD will in future have special packs made by them and other producers which is still better than Roland. Td50 is one shot also and still produces machine gunning. Software editor may be available in future. digital pads by Roland are patented which is why they can’t support them yet and 99% pads are analog. This has more flexibility in firmware expansion so this module could be still outperforming the next versions of Roland modules because this Pearl Mimic is computer based with faster processors and a solid state drive purposes you built for expansion.

Bobby Pena and Roland TD50 has no software support like Alesis Strike module has but like I mentioned this is rumored to have that in future. This module has flexibility in future updates whereas Roland does not

@@robertlucas9867 Yeah, I mean sound is sound subjective. We dont know how many layers are in a td50, but I have adjusted my triggering to remove the gun and get layers, one can only guess as to whats going on in the sounds department of that guy. Mimic can machine gun as well, as can Strike, and TD50. Its always in the setup to remove it. I prefer the acoustic Strike sounds and the TD50 creative sound features over the Mimic. I think I sold my Mimic around the time you bought yours. It just wasnt for me in the end as I wasnt getting where I wanted to go. But this is all personal preference between the top 3.

Hey Justin I’m in need of some help I have a Roland td 25 and I recently made one of my toms a side snare and I plugged the Tom1 cable from the snake into it and I can’t figure out how to make it a snare and not a tom it won’t let me assign it any other sounds other than Tom sounds. Stock kits are made to sound good to an audience, not the drummer. They are set to "cut through" at frequencies not saturated already by electric bands. They sound boring to drummers, but we are used to near-field harmonics and tones, not the ones that make it through to the audience.
