I can also use DW Soundworks with the DWe hub and Roland Rubix 24 audio interface to send 4 outputs to front of house. I prefer to use my V71 module and DWe hub. Hey thanks for the info, that is a nice combination of the two. For Live use I would definitely want to use the v71 module because of the outputs. More outputs are always better, that way the FOH engineer can do what he needs to do to have full control and make it sound the best.

I think it's a bit of a miss to not make a proper integrated rubber rim so all the pads get the new "feature" of a realistic rim height. I think finally making that 20 inch ride would have made a lot of sense. This feels more like a TD-50 upgrade, rather than an entirely new product line. It's not bad at all. It's just even more expensive, even smaller of a change compared to their last flagship, and not quite enough of a leap forward I expected 7 years after the TD-50. But i think the new module sounds are pretty good? I'm gonna need some longer playthroughs, but if Roland has actually managed to make a great sounding module that would be a company first for sure.

Thanks Justin. Haven't talked for awhile as I'm building a new studio and starting a new band. I'm going to purchase the V71 Sound Module and add it to one of my other Roland kits. Or, I'll take both of my two Roland Kits and build a big V71 kit.
@laptoples
@laptoples 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, I guess there isn't a designated rim shot setting though... Right ? Basically 3 different independent sounds for the snare that all have equal capabilities in the settings ? Like if there was 2 keys on a piano keyboard. The left key is normal snare sound, the right is like an overtone like on the rim, and if you press them both down, you can assign an 808 sound or whatever, and have everything that the the other 2 keys have when pressed down independently, like: EQ, pitch, delay, curve, depth, microphone distance, etc, etc etc, and everything else that you can do on the other 2 keys if you press them down one at a time. I think this is the only way you'd be able to have full control over the rim shot, where you hit the head and rim at the same time and be able to program anything you want to. In my case I just want that nice harmonic sound without sacrificing the head or rim sound. I'm wondering if the new V71 might have this capability in the settings ? Not sure if you noticed that when you did your review ? If it does, I'd more than likely start saving for it. This to me is one of the biggest limitations of edrums as far as I personally feel is overlooked, being that I want full control of the rim shot sound with all the bells and whistles the head and rim get by themselves. I will try what you said and see if that gets me closer to achieving rim shot independence !!!!! As far as edrums go, I seek my day of snare INDEPENDENCE !!! Hehehehehehe Anyways....lol Your knowledge is priceless, I wish I could give more, but I'm right in the middle of home repairs, and my furnace of course went out. I live in PA, so yeah.... Great timing.... Hahahahahahaha I just want to be 100% certain this wasn't hidden in the settings so I don't pulling more hairs out of my head searching in the settings, and I'll just have to wait for technology to catch up. Actually, this is a lot of the reason I'm so insistent... I just saw searching around lately, that you can play with BRUSHES and get a SWISH sound and everything !!!! Does anyone know about this ??? It's totally hidden in the settings and it takes some menu diving to do it, but it can be done on the TD27 and TD50, and it sounds good, and I love playing with brushes, so I just wanted to check and know for 100% sure that what I'm looking for isn't magically there buried in the settings. I did hear a few people who just showcased the kits on the V71, and a few of the snares seem to have better rim shot response, so I might save up after all. Thanks again dude ! I appreciate your help !!!! Once I'm done with the repairs I'd like to actually pay your worth, until then, here's a few more bucks for your time !!!! 😁👍

Hey man thanks for the donation :) So in the module, I don't know a way to have control of the 3 three snare sounds in the way you're describing. Because Rimshot and Rim are chained together from what I understand. But maybe over MIDI there's a way. Because there should be 3 MIDI notes (head/rim/rimshot). So maybe there's a way to make it happen in a drum plugin somewhere. As for brush support, I mentioned it in text form in part of the video, but I didn't really talk about it. But yeah you can do brush scrapes on the VAD kit. But even the TD27 has that feature. You just have to turn the brush switch on (page 43 of the manual) and select a brush kit. Nylon brushes only.

Hey Justin, great review !!!! I think you misunderstood me in my last comment, because of how I worded it, so my bad. What I meant was, how do you achieve rim shot control at all. I'll use a little more of an extreme for an example... Can I have the head be a normal snare sound, the rim be an overtone of that, and the rim shot where you hit the head and rim at the same time, be an 808 sound ? If so, I was wondering what settings allows that to happen, because I'd like to adjust the rim shot sound itself whether it's an 808 sound or a reggae high harmonic like I want to do. Is there a specific EQ and delay, compression... Etc, etc etc, for just the rim shot ? I'm just wondering if this is possible on the TD27, where I don't think it is, and if it's now possible on the V71 module. Maybe I just haven't located or opened the right settings to do this. I do get pretty lost in the settings so I may have overlooked it somehow...lol I hope I explained it better. This was a great video on the new V71 Module though !!! Hope you had a great time making it happen. Have a great day ! :-)
@65Drums
@65Drums 2 ай бұрын
You can press the Rim-Head unlink button (maybe labeled H-R). After you do that, you can change the rim and head sounds independently from each other on the snare. So you could have an 808 rim and the snare sound for the head. I think rimshot will follow the sound of the rim zone though. So to get around that, you could have the main sound layer acoustic rimshot, and set that to only trigger on hits 0-60 velocity. And then any hits 61-127 velocity could be assigned to trigger the sub instrument layer, which you can set to be an 808 sound. As for effects, I think that applies to the whole pad. Take everything I'm saying as a starting point, because I don't own that module. I could be slightly off.

many of the features and capabilities seem overengineered and unnecessary - but that's what you pay for. the essential features and capabilities (if there are any truly innovative ones) will eventually trickle down to the intermediate models. a drummer who knows their way around the module, can get everything they need from an intermediate module from a generation or two back. even from justin's playing, the sounds out-of-the-box are still quite sterile and unnatural on this ultra high-end drum kit

Here’s a thought about why they may have put the rubber rim on the inside of the metal edge, the chance of it wearing out when playing hard rim shots is much less if it’s on the mesh head. I’m considering selling my Pearl Mimic Pro set up and getting this kit. I am concerned about your comment saying that there is still that Roland sound present. That was one of the reasons I migrated away after playing Roland exclusively for 30 plus years. Great vid as usual

The GT-1000 had a bit more wiggle room as they're not technically Roland, so it's a large black rectangle 18:33 Right after it came in, I was showing the effects to someone and told him how you could adjust the size of the virtual room you're using for reverb, down to only 4 feet, He responded "So you can put the drums in a room smaller than the drums?". First comment ever…. I preordered this kit to replace my very used Alesis Strike Pro SE. I’m in need of something more reliable for outdoor venues. Although the Alesis lasted almost 4 years, I went through 4 ride cymbals and 2 hi hats. I wound up buying the Roland CY-15 ride and it’s worked flawlessly, proving Roland just makes a better product. Originally, they guessed the kit would ship in October. Now they are saying possibly December. Ugh…

So I own the DWe (the cymbals make me want to die but kit is amazing) and I played this the other day, I definitely like this module better than the TD-50x. Lots of preset customizations and the base kits sound good. Digital snare is not a massive improvement but still feels more responsive Since the prices are fairly comparable (top end DWe is still more) I can say if these had come out at the same time I probably would have gotten this so if you are considering between the two I’d say this is more bang for the buck. And man….the cymbals. If DW releases another round of those they will have an almost perfect kit but Roland’s are king for now

The one thing I found though when practicing songs with Spotify through the module I found it hard to balance the drums and music. I have an older Yamaha DTX III extreme that is at least 14 or 15 years old. I found the mix and sound quality far superior to the Roland. I use Bose noice canceling phones. Wondering if maybe other phones would work better . Maybe a segment looking at various kits and sound quality when playing songs might be worth looking at. Thank you Great info all the time

Nice review Justin. I like roland stuff, just can't afford them. I just wish e drum companies would realise that we need extra inputs! Give me a module with at least 16 inputs, know you can make a cymbal sound by hitting your hoop but it's not the same as having and actual extra cymbal. I 'm sure the efnote kit you showed had the "pro" box added. Efnote kits use a multi wire plug so you cant just plug in 1/4" cables for extra inputs.

Great review as always. One thing that keeps standing out about these "pro" kits are the $40 Alibaba cymbal stands with the knurled boom arms. Either these high end kits should be shells only or if an eDrum company is going to bundle hardware at the pro level least they should design it specifically for cable management. Use hollow boom arms and build in the ability to do internal cable routing so that cables from the cymbals and toms exit at the bottom of the stand instead of making them snake all over. Roland's solve is to use molded, clear gummy cables but they could do much better.

Vintage synth drums are the only instruments worth bothering with. The early 80s Simmons anologue sounds are useable and malleable as are the 70s syn drum sounds. If you could find a way to hook those up to modern pads they would be worthy additions to an acoustic kit for certain situations. I don't like the samples of those sounds in some of the modern electronic kits. The only reason for owning a modern electronic kit is if you are living in an apartment or house where you can't make noise. I suppose you could use them for making demos. If I was trying to make a recording I wouldn't waste my time with any of the modern pretend drum samples.

Justin, great playing, honest review, and helpful info. I'm a long time V-Drums user, V-Pro > KV30 > VAD706. The one thing I'm really disappointed in the VAD706 is the BD. Like you said, it's an annoyance to have to turn the head just right so the double BD pedal will fit. But even worse than that for me is the cushion. I play 2-3 hours per day 6-7 days per week with rehearsals & live playing. After ~2 months the cushion had a permanent deep indentation. I got a replacement cushion then had to switch to the Gibraltar Black ball Beater to lessen this but it's still a problem and a poor design, IMO. I agree with your statement, why not just go with the DW full mesh head design. Since Roland barely changed this design, is the VAD716 BD any better in this regard? Thanks for your help.

As a td27 owner, I’ve spent a lot of time on the room size, mic settings, reverb, equalizer settings etc to achieve decent sounding kits. The standard pre set kits just sound awful in my opinion.

It's hard to comment because your reviews are so thorough. But I'll ask your opinion: For some reason, I really don't like the "Roland sound". It's fake and generic to my ears, but I can't define why. However, almost every VST sounds great. Do you agree? And does adding the DW drum downloads make it sound more like a VST?

This is the most exciting kit from Roland in years. Do you know if there are any plans to make that new snare fully compatible with other modules like the TD-27 including the throwoff? Roland have made massive improvements in the sound. Thank god there's no touchscreen on the module. My only gripe is that, like most other eDrum manufacturers, Roland seems completely uninterested in accessibility. I've been trying to contact all of them even going as far as offering free software development. I can't usually get past the customer support guys. If you have contacts that might help and are willing to put us in touch I'd be grateful.

It's just head and rim and programming them. A little pain in the butt at first, but once you program and save it, you can have more cymbals, cow bells wood blocks, etc... I'd rather just put extra cymbals... Etc... on a separate module. I have a TD27 for the main kit, and the TD-17 for pretty much as many extra cymbals and stuff as I can fit....lol Plus I have a TD6 if I go over that, which I haven't done. Yet !!!! Hahahahahahaha I bought a Lekato edrum set and I have the TD6 going through that. That set is really fun to play, especially since I put clamps and extra cymbals on it, and added a kick pad and my 10' hi hats on a stand. I miss all the fun sounds on the TD6 so now I have it on a super compact set....lol The TD6 is still better then most newer modules out there, especially for how old it is. I like some of the snares more then the ones on the TD27 and the TD17. Although, there's nothing better out there then the digital snare to play on as far as I have felt. Have a great day !!!!!! :-)

I’m really torn between these new Roland’s and the Efnote pro. I’d like to get that Efnote pro 703X. It has the exact drum and cymbals set up I want. But I’m worried about Efnote durability. I owned a TD20 many years ago. Very satisfied. Wish I hadn’t sold it. Can anyone here vouch for Efnote construction quality? Is it comprable to the Roland V’s?

I'll ask when I go back if it's sold, or take a picture if it isn't and if it matches the one here in the video. Looks older maybe...???
