In this little video, we would like to give you a brief sound impression of the Pearl Mimic Pro, the Roland TD-50 and the Alesis Strike Pro electronic drum sound modules.
All three modules are hooked up to the drum-tec pro series electronic drums. While we have combined Roland MG cymbals & the VH-13 Hihat controller with the Mimic Pro & the Roland TD-50, we have used the Alesis Strike cymbals & HiHat controller with the Strike Pro module.

TBH, I think any criticism of sounds of the Alexis is funny, I own a 2Box module and when I want new sounds I just find what I like and put them in the module. Can’t do that with any of the others. That’s the beauty of multi layered samples being played from a module. The mimic cannot or will not allow new samples.

Obviously sound wise, the Mimic sounds the best, but damn that Strike module surprised me. I expected it to sound much worse. I'd say its downfall would be the crash cymbals but I preferred the tom sounds over the Roland TD50, personally. It likely isn't as refined as the Roland module but for the INSANE price difference, Alesis has done some damn fine work this time.

Agreed. I also thought the Alesis toms sounded better than the TD 50. The cymbals didn t sound good on the Strike though. Considering the price difference between the Roland and the Strike Module.....geeze.....I was surprised too that Alesis was somewhat competitive at least with their "tom" sounds. I m sure with tweaking the TD 50 tom sounds are much better than in this video.

Derek Frampton I've always preferred high end Yamaha stuff over Roland. I also had the DM10 module and after playing the Strike Pro I can definitely say it's in a whole other league. Alesis has my approval, especially when in my local stores the Strike Pro is $3,800 and the TD50 is around $13,000.

The Alesis Strike Pro, is a flat out BEAST. Everyone has their preference, but for the sound, plethora of multi layered recorded instrument options with optional dual layering, AND THE PRICE TAG! It’s Strike Pro all day. I’m a heavy hitter and I’ve never encountered any trouble with any of my Alesis E-Drums. From my 13 year old DM5, my daughters 8 year old Nitro Mesh, and 10 year old DM6 my 7 year old DM10 Surge, to my 14 piece (6 toms 8,10,12,12,14,14) 14 snare, 14 kick Strike Pro’s, 3 DM10 (X-toms 8’8’10’) 12’ Piccolo X-snare Real Heads, ‘D’ pad samples and effects 8,8) 11 Surge ‘smartrigger’ cymbals (16,16,16 14,14,14,13,13,13, 14 X-hats, 13hh) all run by dual (2) Strike Pro Modules. It’s not only the biggest, most beautiful E-Kit, I’ve ever owned... it’s also the best sounding E-Kit I’ve ever owned. Though I’ve never been a fan of ANY brands rubber e-cymbals, I will say Yamaha and Rolands (I’m that order) have better stick feel. Alesis gets constantly dogged because of the price tag. I believe that if some of you Roland guys could have a Strike Pro kit for a week to ten days to truly play, and familiarize with the 10,000 ‘voices’, you’d NEVER overpay for the Roland name again.

One feature these manufacturers should consider, especially because a lot of times these are used standalone.. A way to sample the room the kit is in and adjust the reverb to match what real kit would sound like in that space. A way to superimpose the kit into that setting.

I listened to them and the mimic pro sounds great, the TD50 well, it triggers well and the Strike has the ability to add your own multi layered sounds. I think that is whats missing in these sound comparisons. The mimic has everything except open architecture like the Alesis and the 2box has. The TD50 has the ability to improve its sound with sample layering. I still think the Strike has the higher ceiling if your willing to put the work into it.

All three modules sounded good. The Mimic was a clear winner in my opinion. One thing to remember is the Mimic has 65 acoustic kits, no useless t808,909 garbage. For someone looking for acoustic only sounds like my self the Roland and Alesis fall way short. I believe the have 6-10 acoustic kits each.

They should`ve done this differently: Play all the kits but DON`T state which take has been played on which module! Then let all these smart people in here who commented favourably about the mimic and td-50 while bashing the Alesis write down their opinions on each recording and rate them as well. After having gotten some hundreds of votings this way drumtec should publish the results. I guess we´re all would be surprised: Alesis-wise......... that modul is a killer when you take all the features into account. Can`t even believe that they could do this for such a small price! After having played one today I´ll get rid of my TD-20X ASAP and likely will never look back again. The TD-30 could not make me think like that, the TD-50 or mimic might, but their insane insane price tags will very likely end any considerations in that direction for me.

There is a way to do that with the alesis I own the dm10x pro. They have a very hyper sensitive trigger it's just the way you program it.

The Mimic has a much wider dynamic range than the TD50 and a lot more samples. The default kits show the range. I actually have reduced the dynamic range in mine so the quiet notes are louder. The hi hat also performs much better than the TD50 but it is quiet in the presets. If you were to run the Mimic video through compression,you would be able to hear the detail in a similar way to the TD50. The Mimic allows compression on EACH MIC of each drum,which is incredible. There are also many other controls to adjust the dynamic range.

No doubt, the Pearl Mimic sounds much better than the TD-50. However, I am not convinced with the triggering. I bet the Roland TD-50 still triggers better. The Alesis Strike is a low budget tool. Would rather buy a used TD-20 and use sample software.

TD50 just has less dynamic range here. I mean light strokes are sounding louder on TD50. Mimic tracks all the ghost/light notes in that video - I can hear all of them in my headphones .

The real test is in actually playing it. Because sounding good is great. But if the sound you hear is not the sound you expect to hear by the way you played it. Then it’s all nearly for not. All three sound fantastic, hard to say with absolute surety which is the better. It would have to come down to how they play. I have only played the TD50 and it's a very impressive machine. If the strike plays as well as the TD50 and Mimic, it would have to be the Strike as a better buy purely on the fact it's half the cost. But, if cost isn't an issue.... It's between the mimic and the TD50 for me. The TD50 for the fact the USB ride and snare a step ahead of the curve, but the touch screen amongst a few other things might have me preferring the Mimic. With all this said, I come to check out the sound of these modules and had to listen again because the first time I was just loving this guy play!!!

I have a TD-30 and have contemplated replacing it, but I'm not sure. I like the drums in the Mimic Pro more, but the cymbals in the Roland seem to trigger SO much better (they do in my TD-30 as well). Regardless, all of these kits sound great, mainly because of the fantastic playing of the person doing the demo. Great job!

I'm not a drummer but i love sitting at the drums and playing for hours every day - the Mimic sounds the best but for a hobbyist such as myself...the Alesis is definitely catching my eye and ear. Can I run each tom/snare/kick into its own track in Ableton? do they all lose ghost notes or is the Mimic best the other two? Any insight is appreciated.

These are one of the best e-drum modules currently. There are a few other wonderful ones, ATV, Efnote, 2Box, etc., but I understand this test, because for one: these are the big selling brands. I still think the cymbals are the weaker points in the total e-drum experience. It's not the sounds, it's the trigger technology. But I'm seeing the constant development curve upwards, and it will not take too long before there will come a moment when those e-cymbals will also make us wonder with our eyes closed: "is it real or not"? There will always be real drumming, but these things make some situations (like recording, silent practicing) a whole of a lot easier, quicker, and therefore: cost saving. What I also like to see is when drum manufacturers start putting their effort again into high quality compact e-drum pads that feel as natural as the real e-drum kettles used now. I think there's an even big market (probably bigger) for those, compared to the full size kettle e-drums.

Not sure how often you guys reply on here, but how much do yall mess with the KitFx settings on the Alesis Strike Pro? I've only recently found that turning most of it off gives all the acoustic kits a much cleaner sound, and I noticed on this video that the kits sound arguably better than what I hear haha. I've owned a Strike Module for a year now and the one thing that it does better than anyone is the fact that you can load multi-velocity samples. (ie it can load VSTs via SDSE software) I have loaded EZ Drummer, Superior Drummer, Addictive Drums, etc. Don't even use much in the stock sounds. Thats its strength!!

please someone tell me what the heads are. are they electronic heads that can be put on any set of drums ? or the heads come with the drums. he is playing all three brains on the same kit. as far as sound goes I like the Mimic. but at times it seems like it is not picking up on the delicate snare hits. anyway I want to buy a really nice electronic kit for practice and studio recording in my Condo. do you buy the brain separate. and then the rest separate. can you use any acoustic kit ? if someone can fill me in on the details. Roland and Mimic imo are the best options for metal/pop punk/post hardcore. But specifically for metal drumming, the kit on the Alesis sounds phenomenal, and it won't cost you as much as a new model vehicle. Beyond worth in my opinion, and in 2023 the Alesis has come incredibly far.

Interesting. Pearl was a clear winner for me. I did like the second Alesis kit quite a lot. I'm a long time TD-12 user but I really don't like the snare sound on any of the Roland kits in this video, although that's partly personal taste rather than that they're just "bad" I guess. Let‘s be honest Roland isn‘t about sound, it‘s about durability. The TD50 lost in the Comparison but my TD17 overlived all of my Alesis Drums. Pearl Mimic won imo! But the Video wasn‘t about the comparison cause this Dude stole the Show!

Hey Adam (sorry for the delayed reply, the KZbin notifications are off sometimes obviously), the TD-27 has a great price/performance ratio, as it offers some of the most interesting features of the TD-50 (digital pads compatibility, VH-13 compatibility, positional sensing, more in/outputs than the smaller TD-17, usb multichannel etc). Still, if you want to be using the module live & need 8 direct outputs & the physical faders for volumes for example, the TD-50 still is the only current Roland option which offers this. Mimic pro has the best sounds. But if I have to buy a kit for myself, I'll go with the Strike Pro.

C’mon Roland gets the win. Cymbals and snare are incredible, the toms its onñy matter of tunning and other parameters. Alesis has envolved and the mimic si great Roo... but Roland it’s still the best

First, let me express my gratitude for the truly expert explanations. Secondly, I am interested in your opinion regarding the comparison of pearl mimic pro and other e drums modules, roland td 50 and alesis strike pro. Specifically, pearl mimic pro has steven slate drumers software (ssd5) installed, and therefore the question of a real comparison arises. I realize that using the software internally in the module makes a difference. but realistically if we were to use the same software with other modules then comparing the modules themselves would make more sense. is my thinking correct? if at least in part due to the presence of latency and other hardware and software technical details, this would reflect your expert opinion on the above three modules. that is, in your opinion and why was it in favor, in terms of sound and everything else? a simplified comparison view would be between perl mimic pro and td 50 (alesis strike pro) with ssd5. I am very opinionated in your opinion!

Hi, tough question :) If you want to play live without the hassle of hooking up a laptop on stage, the Mimic Pro is your best/only option with authentic multilayer drum samples. For studio / home use, you can make use of the great Roland triggering & positional sensing functionality (TD-30 or TD-50 f.e.) and use any sample library you prefer. Toontrack SD 3.0 has great advanced mapping functions & supports positional sensing on snare & Ride, SSD5 works nicely too, or think of XLN Addictive Drums etc. The Alesis module is way behind the other two in all concerns (especially trigger functionality & build quality). i can't believe that with the quality of Roland drums and modules, they ship with these awful plastic sounding drums. So many advanced playing capabilities but they can't manage to get rid of that plastic clicky shotgun effect. In the 80's that was understandable, but in 2017 come on guys.... Awesome drumming though!

I know what you mean. Especially when I go from playing my Roland td17 to my Tama kit. Those stupid heads on my acoustic kit sound way way to plasticky and clicky. Geeeeez!!!!

It's velocity and attack. They "fixed" the machine gun effect issue on the TD-20 (and following modules) by rolling off the attack when playing a roll, making it less noticable on the cymbals but with the toms and snare, it didn't always work as well because of the velocity of each strike would often "peek" the input. In other words, each strike word register at 100% velocity even though the player still had a ways to go before getting to 100% and the module didn't account for different drummers playing at different intensities. (My 100% isn't the same as your 100% but the module doesn't care.) Hopefully, that's been fixed with the latest modules.

out of curiosity. If you guys do a demo on a module do you ever do any editing to the drum kits before making the video? Like say you like the sound of a kit but you just think the kick is too boomy will you edit that before making the video or do you guys leave all kits stock?

Hi, the sound is always taken directly from the sound module´s stereo output. There is no additional eq, only some compression/limiting to get the audio levels up a bit :) Kind regards!

Nice playing and production. This is not the latest TD50 version though. The latest is v1.06 with different/enhanced kits. Kit 1 is called PRISM Jarrah Ply in the new update. Check it out.

I chose the alesis strike pro, because I just liked the look and only needed the features on the drum. I don't really care about the sound of the module, because I only need an electric drum hardware for midi on various software with much wider sound control options that are not found in any drum kit module. Because until recently, it was best to buy sound the vst digital drum. sd3 is the best

Electric kits are nice for practice, but band members don't like that they can't feel the beat. Does the pro series solve this problem? I'm still on a ttd-20 v-pro looking to upgrade.

Hey Rod, all band members I have used electronic drums with were absolutely happy because you can control volume/frequencies and use drumsounds appropriate for specific musical genres within a click of a button. I have not yet met anybody who said something about not feeling the beat (?), it was rather the opposite "wow I can finally hear a REAL bass drum sound with some low end in the rehearsal room." Might be a matter of appropriate amplification too? Please check out the drum-tec Silent Studio Sessions if you like, you can basically set up sessions like this in your living room without any noise & headphone monitoring if you use DIs for all instruments. I suggest you use (TRS to TRS) connect Radial JDI duplex DI Box, then the low end frequency will be great.(Don't use TS cable) .By the way, Roland product use DI Box can make the sound to a greater degree.

Sound wise, TD50 lush tails and overtones of the drums and cymbals are the best. The kits he demo in the Mimic are awesome overall kits recorded there, and the Strike is very good for the price but nothing near. Now lets face it, who plays like Ralf anyway? Killer chops dude!! I really like your drumming!

Would it be fair to say you were uninspired when playing the Alesis module? If so was that due to mainly to the triggering or the sounds? I got the impression you were more expressive and dynamic on the other modules. The Roland VAD306 is much cheaper in Australia than the Alesis, but the sounds aren't as good. But if I can be more expressive on the Roland would it be worth sacrificing the sound quality? Thanks mate.

Hi, you are right the Roland cymbals (especially the hihat) trigger / play much smoother & more expressive on both Mimic Pro as well as TD-50 than the Alesis Strike Pro. Same goes for the drum-tec pads actually, which do work with the Alesis module but won't offer the same range of functionality & playability as with TD-50 / Mimic. Kind regards!

The ride on the td50 is plugged via usb. Can you tell a big difference in dynamics???

Hi, the CY-18DR is 18" in diametre and has a different surface/rebound and bigger bell than the smaller Roland cymbal pads. It plays/feels exceptionally well & realistic, probably the most realistic ride cymbal pad on the market in my personal opinion. But you need the TD-50 to use it though... Kind regards!

Considering the mimic is just the module on its own costs the same if not more than the the whole alesis set up….I’d go for the alesis. Plus Roland much like PRS and DW drums are so over priced for what they are. And I’ve heard the alesis sounding so much better than it does on here.
