I gotta say, I'm incredibly impressed with your review - more than I am with the awesome-sounding bass. You actually play the same riff, the same way when demoing each variation, so we can get an accurate idea of what the actual bass sounds like, rather than trying to figure out if it's the way you're playing or the groove itself that's making the difference in sound. Very intelligent and well thought-out presentation. You got me subbed + liked.

When I was about 14 I was gifted a cirrus custom shop. After playing a t40 for about 2 years. I’m now 30, and it’s been on all gigs, played in all churches I’ve played at. I’ve been wanting to replace it with a new bass, but I haven’t been able to find something comparable or better for under 1500 new. This has been such an amazing instrument to play, and it’ll go with me once again to an audition with a new church. Can’t wait to redial a new tone that fits me. You’re able to get soooooooooooooo many different tones with the later models which is what I have. Great all around bass. Took it to guitar center and they offered me 225 for it. No blemishes, nothing missing. I walked away laughing to say the least.

I am pretty sure the variable mids were always an option, and not standard on the Cirrus. They were standard on the active USA Millenniums. The variable mid circuit was very powerful. A little would go a very long ways. Supposedly, Peavey was to begin production of Cirrus basses in the Czech Republic before the pandemic. If this ever happens it will be great considering how good Czech Spectors are.

There's a Unity Dyna bass which is basically a TL4 on verb for 8 bills right now. I would totally trade someone my honeyburst one for that blue one, though, as my TL5 is the blue one also, and their finishes and woods are likely from the same woodpile, workbench, and finish guy. The honeyburst one is gorgeous but somehow honeyburst instruments are invariably goregeous af. THe flame wings LEAP off the honey way harder than the blue TL5 I have. I've never seen anyone use BLOCKS of flame maple for the wings, though. That's pretty cool. ALL of them have bricks of flame maple on the sides, near as I can tell.

@LowEndLobster
@LowEndLobster 2 жыл бұрын
I have not, but I believe those Millenium AC BXP models had the same VFL pickups (and maybe same preamp too?) as what's on this Cirrus. I'd say go for it! I can think of plenty of worse ways to spend 200 bucks.
@russellzauner
@russellzauner 2 жыл бұрын
@@LowEndLobster if it's got the standard preamp I've seen on VFL, then it's got DIP switches too - make sure to get the manual (peavey has them all online for old products), more than one of those has been sold for cheap because they thought it was broken or otherwise defective. Avoid the starter kit guitars made in China and the rest should be fine. In fact, the Indonesian Cirrus looks suspiciously like Ibanez BTB if you cross your eyes a bit. I'd say if they kid can get up to 300 bucks to spend, you can also find a Peavey Patriot, which is mahogany like the Gibson/Serek basses and actually have a super ferrite which is a LOT like a bass P-90, they go BOOP BOOP BOOP real nice - chuck a tone monster filter circuit in there and it will also get all Wal-ly on you probably. It's a Peavey Celebration Day, yall - they used to call the T60 the Mississippi Mustang. ;-)

The Cirrus was basically Peavey's take on a boutique, modern-voiced bass. They kind of existed in the same class as Carvin's LB series or one of Yamaha's or Ibanez's higher-end models. Great instruments, no doubt. I've come across a few TL-5s over the years and came close to getting one a few times but never committed. Maybe one day! As another missed Peavey opportunity story, I once came across a VB-MA at a music store and they were going to sell it to me brand new for cheaper than what they were going for used on Reverb. I wasn't gigging at the moment and couldn't justify another tube amp in the collection, so I didn't take them up on the offer. But still, it was a crazy deal. That may have been about the time Peavey was discontinuing the amp and maybe the store was just trying to move stock to get the space.

Back in the nineties I think Peavey and Carvin were at each other's throats. Both were trying to make the perfect American active 5 string bass. Cirrus had the woods and pickups. Beautiful bass.

I've had I think 7 including a custom shop of these and they are all I used to play. The necks are reinforced and the mid sweep control first appeared on the upper end millennium series and were used on the custom shop series Cirrus. I still have a brand new Peavey pre-amp with the mid sweep, I put them in any Cirrus I bought that did not have one which were most. There were two body styles in this American series, one was a little wider top to bottom and the necks never had a gloss finish. Some models only had a oil finish throughout and were my favorites. There was an Indonesian series labeled BXP which lacked many of the features of the American builds. Peavey reintroduced this US like model that was made over seas that mimicked the American model just a few years ago but only had them for a short couple of years... Many of the newer American Cirrus from the original series (like the one in the video) had Hipshot tuners.

Next to a Ken Smith Black Tiger 5, the Cirrus 5 was the second-best bass that I've ever played!!! Killer Smith-like tone!!! I may have to get another one! This video convinced me that I had to get a Cirrus: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYSui4mXZdSSlc0 WHAT A TONE MONSTER!!!

Hey there ! Can anyone tell me if standard Ernie Ball strings will fit or do I have to purchase extra long scale for this ? I don't own one but my GASing will depend on the answer !

I have a custom shop Mike Porcaro model with birds eye maple finger board. Back in the day Cirrus was known as a poor mans Ken Smith.

Those are great. For the price, even today, you get a ton. Competes well with a lot of much more expensive luthiers.

@@LowEndLobster That is still in my top 5 favorite basses that you own and that sounds very sad now that I've said it out loud but I'll stand by it.

Correction on that Dyna bass, its a 9 volt preamp not an 8 volt. No idea where that came from!

I wonder how it sounds next to the Aria bass that looks just like that! Aria’s are hard to get esp for lefties..

I have the tiger eye with sweepable mids. They are fabulous basses. Mine is a keeper and the best playing bass I’ve ever owned. I would recommend hanging onto that. Great recording bass as well.

How do you compare this to a Ken Smith bass tone and built.

The bridge on the Cirrus annoyed me more than anything. The sounds, weight,feel was amazing! Even the Chinese BXP Cirrus was pretty good for $400 back 15 years ago

Same. I swapped mine out with a Hipshot 18mm A type (it's in the B-roll, but I shot the rest of the video before I did the swap). Very happy with the end result. Didn't even have to drill.

There was a Peavey Cirrus 5-string at Sam Ash near me in the rental section. I paid $300 for it. It was a great bass, but I turned around and sold it to Guitar Center right down the street for ~$1600 a week later and I felt like I hit the lottery. Years later, I’m playing a Peavey TL-Five. From what I’ve read, it was the signature model that inspired the Cirrus line and it’s a pretty awesome bass. I love how “gulpy” these 80s/90s Peavey basses are. Thanks for this video.

Is there ever a bass you guys don't mod before you play it. There is no way in a full mix with an actual band..not alone in your bedroom that you can tell a difference between some of these pickups that get modded...definitely preamps. Just seems to be fad influenced.

I didn't mod this one... well OK I did mod this one with a new bridge, but that was after I shot the video. Checkmate Bassthiests! TBH, I absolutely can tell the difference and it's definitely audible in most cases. I let you folks be the judge of whether or not its worth it :)
