Pebeo Mixed Media Sea Song Painting with Tristina

Pebeo mixed media paints are a blast to create with in my studio. In this video I'm showing how to use the fabulous liquid oil paints (Vitrail, Fantasy Prisme and Fantasy Moon) over dried shimmery Pebeo Studio Acrylics Dyna on Canson Art Board to create a free form Sea themed abstract painting.
Pebeo liquid oil paints can be used on just about any non-porous surface (e.g. glass, metal, plexiglass, stretched primed canvas) or porous surface (e.g. paper, fabric, wood) that is covered in acrylic paint or mediums to be sure it is sealed. These paints are about the consistency of thick olive oil or honey, so its best to paint on a flat level surface. Sometimes I use the runny-ness to my advantage and tilt my paintings to get delicious drips!

HINT 1: Cover your work area with plastic and assure you have good ventilation when working with liquid oil paints.
HINT 2: Mix the paints well before pouring. You can also use a plastic dropper to put the paints just where you want them.
HINT 3: Clean up Pebeo's liquid oil paints with Mineral Spirits. If you are cleaning a plastic dropper with mineral spirits, cover the tip of the dropper with a finger as you tip the end up, otherwise, mineral spirits sprays everywhere!

Hi Annette! Thank you for your comment! I have found that the Pebeo Fantasy effects (Moon and Prisme) are lost on a curved object, like you have in mind with the clay cabochons. Instead what I see a lot of artists do is apply the Fantasy paints on a flat surface to get the effects, then cover with doming resin or attach glass or resin shapes over the beautiful Fantasy effects when they are dry. You can use regular acrylic gloss gel medium to attach the two surfaces together. The acrylic gel will look white when it is wet, but will dry clear. 😃 You can also check out my fellow KZbinr Barbara over at Joggles to see how she works with the Pebeo Fantasy paints in Jewelry and a bunch of other projects. Used some of the Prism and Moon paints in an abstract floral I am working on!!! Actually...the Pebeo paints are making up the "Dragon" in my painting titled "The Dragon in the Garden." I used the Cerne Relief to outline a couple of flowers and am going to use the Vitrail in those flowers to give them a stained glass look. Can you add fluid acrylics on top of the Pebeo Fantasy paints...like I want to add a red "eye" to my Dragon. Oh...the Moon and Prism effect when they mix together is awesome...even though I used it in a much smaller area...it really looks cool!!

Hi Larry, Can't wait to see your finished painting! To answer your question, I allow the Pebeo liquid oil paints (they are fast drying alkyds) Vitrail, Prisme, Moon and Ceramic, to fully dry for at least 3 days, then paint over them with acrylics or other oil paints. You'll find the liquid oil paint surface is slick when dry, so acrylic paints that are too 'wet' may not stick. If you need better surface stickiness, then you can apply a coat of Pebeo Vitrail Mat Medium over top to increase the surface tooth. Keep experimenting and enjoy the process❣😃🖌🎨

I like using oil pastels over this. There are vibrant colors, you can add texture as well! Red eyes seem to call for a white base or texture paste (or black w/texture) with transparent red over it, or if mixed media, you could use red glass taxidermy eyes or simply red glass! Just a couple of ideas. I'd love to see the finished project too! You could use a fed alcohol ink over metal (Silver leaf looks incredible with alcohol ink over it!) I'd do a test swatch to see if your acrylics work over oils. I've has some success with acrylics over water soluble oils (&/or with W medium mixed with the oils, although haven't tried with Pebeos yet! If I recall correctly, I had acrylic over oils from an old project that had problems over time. I'd use oil paint or oil pastels over oil paints of any type. It's helpful when doing mixed media to make a chart of using your media o er each other, AND mixed with each other, if you go there, too to see what works and what does not! also if you use papers, a test of media on each type is nice to have & actually fun to do for an art journal reference page that you can label and turn to when you need this information! Don't forget your gesso, textures, canvases & other materials too!

Hello Celtic Wren and Thank You! These Pebeo Liquid Oil Paints dry to a super hard shiny surface. They do not need to be varnished, however, if you prefer a satin or mat finish you can use a thicker acrylic varnish in whatever sheen you prefer. I have never varnished any of my shiny paintings and they still look just as vibrant 5 years down the road. 😍

Thank you for your nice message Meli! Since the Pebeo Fantasy paints are liquid alkyd oil paints, they take longer to dry than acrylics and shorter to dry than tube oil paints. I usually leave a painting flat to dry for 3-7 days (depends on how deep I pour the paints) - although I once had a saggy canvas where the paints pooled in one area and that took 4 weeks to dry enough to where I could put it on a wall. Just keep in mind that since oil paints 'oxidize' rather than 'evaporate' during the drying process, your painting surface with the liquid oils will be dry to the touch long before the entire paint film will be fully hardened. So, even though the surface may be dry, if you press on the top you may still be able to dent the work! I recommend you do not put anything on top of the artwork or lean anything against it for at least 3 weeks, and sometimes longer if the paint was poured thicker. When I use the Pebeo liquid oils in a thinner application (like if I use Vitrail applied with a brush) they dry much faster, but applying the special effect Fantasy Prisme and Fantasy Moon with a brush may cause the effects to not appear and only impart a beautiful shimmer instead...and I like that too! :-)

Also, once the marker oils are sealed with Pebeo varnish can the entire piece then be sealed with other products? I read your review on Amazon. Thanks.

Wow pretty lady, you devoted a LOT of time on the links to help us. Spent $200 on sets of these paints, but afraid to use them yet. Is the lightening medium to help the paints move around? It's so expensive. Looks like you poured whole bottles on the canvas. THANKS!

Thank you for your question Leah! If you imagine watercolor painting, you add WATER to the paper first if you want the watercolor paints to spread out quickly and meander/blend on their own. Since the Pebeo Fantasy Prisme, Fantasy Moon, Vitrail and Ceramic are all a liquid form of oil paints, the un-colored Lightning Medium acts as an OIL base (as does the water in watercolor) for the other liquid oils to slip-slide over and blend to create interesting additional effects. And, as the Lightning Medium is a Vitrail product, it is also used to lighten the tint of the concentrated Vitrail paint colors. Hope this helps! 😍🎨

I’ve done a Moon, Vitrail, Prisme piece that I don’t like. It is too dark. Can I use the 4artist metallic or other oil markers on this surface to liven it up, or do you have another suggestion? What will I then seal with if I do?

Hi Scott! Thanks for your question. :) Yes, you can use the 4Artist markers over the dried Pebeo liquid oils. As a matter of fact, you can also create over them with any acrylic or resin paint as well. If you do use the 4Artist markers, then use the 4Artist water-based Varnish over it (2 coats) to seal the marker. Enjoy!

I mix the Lightening Medium in the big bottle with the single Vitrail colors to lighten the tint of the color. The Lightening Medium can also be used to "wet" your work surface so the other liquid oil colors spread faster; similar to when you wet paper first with water before applying watercolors to get them to bloom and spread on your surface. Most likely Pebeo sent this paint for free and asked to use A LOT on the demo video. Those who spend their own money to buy these expensive paints will never pour such an insane quantity. I wish the result was better than what we see.

Hi Nessy! I discovered the technique I shared on this video through a KZbin video of some French artists (I didn't understand what they were saying except 'Voila!':). I played around with their shared ideas to bring in ocean colors since I live in Florida. Whether I use a lot of liquid oil paint or only a little, the outcome is always a surprise! Some I like & some I don't. More projects get filmed than shared, and I try to share the ones with what I think are an exciting outcome. My paintings are generally shiny with a lot of depth (hence lots of paint - although not as much paint nor as expensive as resin or poured acrylics) and alas they do not photograph well. Yes, the liquid oil paint dries shiny. No, it doesn't look like Encaustic, although it does exhibit a beautiful translucence when the Pebeo Vitrail is layered over acrylic paints.

Hi Goldfish1871! Sorry I didn't see your comment earlier, and here goes with an answer to your question... The liquid oil paints I use in the video are modified oil alkyds. Alkyds are modified paints, and in this case the oil is mixed with other chemicals to allow it to flow as a liquid and DRY FASTER than regular tube oil paint. The Pebeo liquid oils are modified (alkyd) oils that act as stable oil paints with a self-leveling, hard, smooth, shiny finish when cured, however, they fully cure (not 'dry') through oxidation like tube oils, so even though the surface is dry to the touch the layers below are still molten. You may think of these liquid oils as very LEAN. Therefore, using the FAT OVER LEAN principle of oil painting, you can see that you may get unwanted results by pouring the liquid oils on top of wet or recently painted oils. That being said, if the oil painting is FULLY OXIDIZED (i.e. fully cured for over 1 year or more), then the fully cured oil painting may accept other media. I believe great discoveries are made by exploration and taking action on the question "What If?", so with that in mind, I suggest you forge ahead in trying the crazy ideas you have in your head on test pieces of artwork in your studio and live with them for a year or more to see the curing effects...then let us other artists know what you discover! 🎨🖌👍😀

So...can you use the Relief Outliner to outline flowers in an abstract and use the Vitrail inside the boundary of the Outliner to make the flowers look like stained glass on a canvas. The flowers are already painted with acrylics....I just want to make the flowers pop on the canvas. I just got the Pebeo Vitrail Discovery set today along with the Relief Outliner today and am anxious to try it.

Hello Larry! Yes, you can use the Vitrail paints over top of acrylic. And, yes, you can also create a boundary with Cerne Relief to hold the Vitrail paints in a certain area. Just be sure you make the Cerne Relief thick enough to hold in the Vitrail paint (hint - the cerne relief shrinks a bit as it dries and after it dries I usually check out the lines and go over the spots that are too thin to hold in the Vitrail). You want to be sure you have some Vitrail Lightening Medium to help lighten the concentrated Vitrail colors in the Discovery set that you purchased. You can apply the Vitrail paint with a brush, toothpick or dropper and clean up is with a little odorless mineral spirits or other oil paint thinner. Have a blast; these paints are soooo much fun! :-D

One other question. Have you used the Vitrail paints or any of the other paints with Clear Tar Gel to hold the paints in certain areas. I sometimes use Clear Tar Gel on canvases that I coat with black gesso. That way when I lay down other colors, the area with the clear tar gel still retains the black color. If you look at any of Jo Toye works on Northlight's KZbin page you' ll see what I mean. I can't wait to try the two Fantasy paints in my regular landscape paintings....I am betting they would look fantastic in a sunset or a seascape!! I am also betting they look great when used with flowers created with modeling paste. I am sorry if I am asking lots of questions...but I really haven't found anyone using the products here in the greater Austin Texas area....so I am going to have learn via trial and error.

Yes Larry, you can use the Clear Tar Gel to create a wall to hold in the Vitrail and Fantasy paints! With experimentation you will find the best colors to Pop against the black. I love using black backgrounds, too. The Fantasy Moon Pearl, Fantasy Prisme Eggshell , Fantasy Prisme Buttercup, Fantasy Moon Emerald, and loads of others look terrific against the dark. Have fun!

Thanks for your question Jayne-Anne! I have learned that the Pebeo liquid alkyd oil paints work best on a non-porous (sealed) surface. My favorite surfaces to use the paints on are the Pebeo liquid art panels or stretched (already primed) canvases. When I put the liquid oil paints on a paper based background, I always collage and cover the entire paper surface with acrylic gel medium (matte gel medium is my favorite) and/or acrylic paint to seal it, then let it dry before pouring on the liquid oils. Sadly I bought a ton of the relief outliners and they are all crap. All way thick when they come out of the tube and no way to make nice defined lines. I can't recommend the product at all. I do use the paints and they are wonderful.

I hope you took them back to the store for replacement? If the tubes get frozen I have found the paint in the Cerne Relief can get thick and won't come out. So...store them inside at a minimum. 😃
