Grand Designs Series 5 Episode 1 With Kevin McCloud.
BAFTA winning Grand Designs is widely recognised as the pre-eminent series on modern architecture and design in Britain. It was originally conceived as a documentary series presented by designer and writer Kevin McCloud that takes us into the heart of life’s great unfolding human stories, where ordinary families risk all to experiment with architecture, technology, and their own lifestyle.
Now in its 24h year, Grand Designs is one of Channel 4’s biggest returnable factual series and has grown into a global phenomenon, selling in over 100 territories. Apart from the TV series, the Grand Designs brand has also expanded to include books, a monthly magazine, architectural awards and a biannual exhibition, Grand Designs Live.

Love that they are putting these on an international platform. Considering the age it'd be exciting to see how these have all endured over time. . . .

The house has weathered well, it’s an AirBnb, blocks from London Bridge… Most of these episodes the person’s whole name or something will give you the opportunity to research it… that’s sometimes the best part is finding out where they are now.❤

I am glad they have continued to live in it instead of immediately sell as the builder couple did who built the eco hobbit house

Well done Monty!! This is what this show is all about. Like Kevin said at the end this could've been a total trainwreck, but with craft and guile (and a lot of financial help from his father and friends) they made something really neat. This is the perfect blend of ambition and practicality that most people on this show don't have; the right amount of daring and experimentation without having his head up his ass like those artists that made the dual facing house made with mdf and the reflecting pool in between in North London 9 (season 2). The only concern I have is it's not child-friendly whatsoever, those pigeon steps are a hospital visit waiting to happen. By the way, he should've tried to patent and license that window design, he could've become rich off of that.

Not sensible for a growing family but this build represents a crazy time of life. I’m just glad no one lost a hand! If I were the adjacent property I would have been glad to buy it to expand the garden…surprised they didn’t grab it before it went to auction.

20 years ago and would be nice to see how the house looks like now. Their kid should be about 20 years now!

For one I don't like the house, BUT I must applause the ingenuity, push and determination that went into this project and of course his wife for liking the house. Welldone Monty

Monty borders on being a Genius but also on being Careless and idiotic, yet I can't help but be in awe of what he managed to build, including those childhood projects. He is a gem of a person, and I imagine with more project management training and funding, he could push the boundaries of architecture and design to momentous heights. also Claire is adorable and i appreciate Kevin's insight and experience so much. That said Claire is probably unhinged too cause she indulges the crazy, that bath beneath the bed concept LOL, not Monty's finest idea. hope he learnt from that.

Yes! To all of the above! I think these women are equally bonkers to conceive children mid buildingproject. But many on this show do.

Why and how do these people always get money from friends? I wouldn't dream of asking my friends to lend me money, let alone give me money. Do the program makers give them anything?

Hats off for getting through the project... But my God! What an idiotic floorplan. Obviously put the common room with connection to the garden. I would have made a narrow courtyard (maybe only a meter on depth) along the neighbours wall with the bedrooms connecting up to that. Creating light and a sense of outdoor space in the bedrooms.

They get to look out at a blank wall incongruously clad with public bus flooring instead of the sunny old vacant lot between two historic homes.

I've just watched the plan part so they may change this, but does it make sense to take the only window wall and put it in the only room in which you spend only dark hours? Also, what does mono dimensional mean?

That occurred to me too. The only room in the house with a window and it's a bedroom.

Yikes... I mean, the sliding roof is nice, I suppose, but everything else? Like, the location is a fucking nightmare - right between the neighbours? That one window of their neighbour's is basically useless now. And the open roof means that there's no privacy from the neighbours, as they can just look down into their livingroom. The garden is just a walled deck? They spent almost 10 years on this, just because it's in London? Fuck's sake, what a waste of time. An earlier comment said that this is now an AirBnB, so I assume that the guy finally came to his senses
