Derechos are such an underrated severe weather event that are often much worse then the majority of weak tornadoes because of how widespread the damage can be. Glad you guys were spared the worst of the damage from this one.
@JessicaTiramisu5 ай бұрын
I was just coming in to say the same thing! The amount of damage these systems can cause is something else...and you can definitely hear them coming too.
@g.sanders69165 ай бұрын
This exactly. As an iowan who was hit by the August 10th, 2020 derecho I know it all too well. For a tornado impact on a single town you can call on your neighboring communities for mutual aid, but when everyone in your area is dealing with the same thing there is no mutual aid. With that any state aid and federal aid also has to be triaged out to the communities that need it the most.

I was in disaster response and worked over 60 disasters and have been in 4 of my own. One being a director. Half of us couldn't even respond and was the worst event we dealt with. They are basically inside out tornados stretched hundreds of miles wide. It sounded like a freight train, and the sky was sickly green. People really don't understand how nasty these things are. I would rather deal with a tornado.
@Sargy18MPBDE5 ай бұрын
@@g.sanders6916, I was just going to mention that one. I'll never forget that day here in Chicagoland. It was the beginning of the pandemic and my niece's birthday. Heard Iowa got whooped before us and then it hit my area spawning numerous EF0 and EF1 tornadoes, some a few miles from me, and took out numerous trees in our backyard. Never heard of or been in a derecho event before nor do I ever want to be in another one ever again. 😬 Hope you were OK that day.
