Pedal Chains: How To Take Off A Master Link

DW 5000 pedals (and a couple others like 3000, 4000, and some other brands) use the chain itself as a way to adjust the footboard height. To do this, you must remove the master link at the end and then pop it back on in a different position. This video will show you how to do that.

NO SHIT! I bought a DW 3000 double pedal last night, and for THE LIFE of me, I couldn't figure out how to adjust the slave pedal until I saw this video this morning! DW themselves, should have a video like this! I was LITERALLY gonna take this bitch back to Guitar Center and say, "Here. YOU adjust this fucking thing!" HAHA!

Take heed on the magnetic end... My first master link clasp... Flew off into the void that is my living room.... Clasp is currently replaced with a thin metal twisty tie that is common place with cable management and new packaging.

I did it a couple times before filming. It’s also the same thing on a bike chain, which I had done before.

I was acuatlly thinking on removing one of the links of the chain. is there a way I can replace the chain or remove it?

Most pedals you can easily unscrew the bottom of the chain with a screwdriver or drum key. The top will either come off like this video or with a drum key. You can then do whatever you want. I'm not sure you'll find shorter chains available to buy. The best bet is probably to use a bicycle chain tool to remove a link. They're like 7 bucks at REI or probably similar on Amazon.

@@RyanAlexanderBloom Wow, thanks for the answer! I have the exact same mapex pedal. Apparently it is kinda rivited to the botton of the pedal and I cant remove it. I have sent an email to mapex asking how I could remove or if there are any other options. will be taking it to the local bike shop down my street. hopefully it Works, currently the pedal is sitting way too low and it is extremely annoying and frustrating since I cannot do heel toe.

Gabriel Roma odd. My Mapex will disassemble with just a Phillips screwdriver the bottom. Yours must be from a different generation. Good luck. I think a bike shop should be able to do it easily after they get over how weird it is that you brought in a drum pedal.

Yep - I have the same pedal, the footplate is so low its knocking on the wing nut clamping the pedal to my drum! I think I need to remove at least one link. How do I do that? I didn't really understand in the video what was the point of disconnecting the chain and then reconnecting it exactly the same as before. Surely the only reason for disconnecting is to remove or add a link? How do I do that?

Larry Tozzi the bottom is usually just a screw. I’ve never seen one where it wasn’t easy on the bottom.

My PDP 4000 has a Phillips head screw thru the foot pedal w/ locking bolt to the bracket attachment the chain is attached to a bracket that has a metal rod that is crimped on both ends tried to send a picture but no way to attach it here

Larry Tozzi ok, I think I get what you’re saying. So you want to remove the chain from the mounting plate with the screw in it. I’ve never done that or even considered doing that. Thus, I have no useful suggestions. I looked at a few of my pedals and they all seem to have a rivet or some other type of semi-permanent attachment at that point, not intended to be removed.

The chain snapped I have to replace it ... PDP has no replacement brackets just chains
