Toe jam protectors! Pedal condoms. The compressor at the end allows me to turn up or down without affecting the drive much at all. Good for turning up pedals to higher gain and still having it at lower home volume. Most people say compressor before overdrive but It might be good to have two. One before and one after.
@mark71666 жыл бұрын
If you can have both, then do. I've always gone from all pedals, to multi-effects, then back to all pedals, etc. Now I've got about 20 pedals and a Helix. I use the Helix most for its convenience, but every so often I get the desire to string up a bunch of pedals. Best of both worlds.

I played through a guitar effects board for a long time then one day I decided to make a pedalboard. After 6 months or so it came to me that I need a amp that have some effects built into it because of money get expensive quick. After some time looking at different amps I ran across the Black Star ID 260 which have four different reverbs four different delays it have chords tremolo flanger and phase built-in and it's stereo what a sweet amp. That amp save me about $500 worth in pedals. It basically took care of my wet sound. In order this is my foot pedal board boss EQ 20 programmable Zvex super duper two in one my OCD pedal running on soft clip my Wawa pedal to my compressor I run a daisy chain but my compressor pedal is run on battery helps keep the noise out small and beautiful easy to pack and simple-to-use. My compressor pedal is made by Xotic that pedal you can go inside it has four switches and you can customize what you want that pedal to be simple to use a volume blend low medium and high pressure rate simple love it.

I'm normally not a proponent of putting the compressor last since it tends to squash the tone to a degree as well as amplify any noise that may be introduced into the chain, but you seem to make it work...to me your overall tone is now much more "alive" than it was with the Fractal, more organic and present...I think you will find it much more to your liking in live situations where you need your tone to be more prominent in the mix...VERY nice job Ross!

You may want to consider adding another compressor to the front of the chain if you're finding your clean+delay/rev/mod tones need front loaded compression..... I understand using it as a "leveller" last but you may miss the extra smoothness and punch in the mix from having a front end comp.
@ThorneyedWT5 жыл бұрын
But how you deal with amp differences in different gig/rehearsal places? Isn't some processor like Helix or GT-100 with amp and cab sims included better to have consistent sound everywhere? So you just plug into PA, maybe do some minor EQ tweaks, and that's it...
@jimbojones41643 жыл бұрын
Yes. 100%. I'm never going from my AX8 back to amp/pedal. Too much hassle btw the pedals, cables, amp, and having a crumby sound guy mic the cab.
@gusmorales48626 жыл бұрын
I made the switch from a board like this, to a board with a programable looper, just to scrap it and go back to using a rack processor. I still have some pedals for the creative process but for gigging, simplicity is key and the less things to step on the better.
@ZachComa4 жыл бұрын
To avoid fat fingering, or in this case, fat footing extra pedal switches, get a loop switcher that'll control combos of them all. I know you said you're not looking to get one, but if you change your mind I'd recommend a Boss ES-8. Not only can it control combos of what's on and off, it can change their orders even before the amp or into the loop per patch, and it controls midi.

Great video! You could always add a tin or two to store picks or a slide or something if you’re trying to fill the space without adding another pedal.

Nice board man. i have the same pedal train. Only thing I find with that mini way is the board angle makes it uncomfortable to use the vol and wah. I found putting a piece of wood under the front of the pedal train makes the wah more level and way nicer to use. Also I started with the wah where you have it but put it at the top of the pedal board so that my foot can over hang at the top and not bump anything else. That way you can have a pedal close to the bottom of it. Something worth considering.

@Jaykayea6 жыл бұрын
@@saucybaka4439 a compressor brings the quieter parts up (compressing) where ever you place it. I too am wondering why specifically he chose at the end. Everyone else lives by compressor very early in the chain. It all sounds the same, I'd assume his reasoning is later (or earlier) in the video when he mentioned he needed a pedal that would allow the patch cable to head out of the chain and into his amp. Bringing the quieter parts up in the mix is what a compressor does, no matter where you put it.
@2122banks6 жыл бұрын
If you run your compressor pedal first you going to compress everything after it. And it will affect every pedal on the board which is in front of it some guitar players like that some don't. If you run it last in your chain it gives you the option to compress everything or not if your amp is not compressing enough for you and if you got it last you can add more compressed to the amp and help it compressed more and it makes it much more sweeter than running it first or in the middle. I run my compressor pedal last

@brettmarlar41546 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised that you put the compressor last. I tend to put it more towards the front of the chain; after my volume, PS-5 Super Shifter, and wah pedals, but before my overdrives. I use it more for a frequency balancing effect than that of an overall volume balance. Mostly due to my two-handed touch techniques. That, and it adds more oomph to drive pedals.
@CamiloVelandia6 жыл бұрын
I hear ya. I have an Axe FX II, Axe FX III, and AX8, and a bit ago I built a pedalboard, but I'm back to my AX8. The reason being that backline amps on tours are a nightmare. They all sound different, and your drive pedals will sound different on each one. I ended up making an 'amp less" preset on my AX8 with four different drives. Drive 1 X/Y, Drive 2 X/Y, and I actually use the High Cut and Low Cut to shelve my tone from amp to amp. This has actually proven to be more effective than real drive pedals, which were driving me insane. I tried too many, the problem was still the same.
@RossCampbellGuitarist6 жыл бұрын
Fortunately my main drive (the Suhr Eclipse) has a 'voice' control for both circuits, that has proven to be incredibly handy for use with different amps. It can really tame overly-bright sounding amps, and at the same time bring some high-end detail to darker amps.

Regardless of how good the Multi-effects board, players always come back to individual stomp boxes. It’s either Gear Acquisition Syndrome or the desire build a unique individual board that is Truly “Your Own”

The newer Zooms (5's) are great if you want stomp and fiddling with them knobbies. Pedal-intuitive. I got a semi pedal/multi thing going on. Using the zoom (G5) in the fx loop (pedals goes infront) seems like a good idea to me.
@bradhargis22616 жыл бұрын
Real pedals also just feel and sound better in person. It definitely enhances the playing experience for the player. I sold my pedals and went all digital rackmount through the fx loop of my amp head. I ended up selling the rack unit and went back to individual pedals again. The whole time my wife just shaking her head at me.
@markuskoivisto6 жыл бұрын
There’s benefits to both. If you play in a cover band, being able to recall a bunch of sounds and programming your entire set list on the multi-fx is brilliant. I have stomp box pedals, and switching delay times can be somewhat awkward, so I have two delay pedals on the board - one for short delays and one for long delays. The pedalboard takes up a lot more space and I occasionally have to chase down a plug that has come loose if there’s no signal when I plug in. Using separate pedals I can switch out pedals if I want a different sound, so the pedalboard is an evolving thing. It also means it’s not all or nothing, and I’m not dependent on pre-programmed patches of I want to try what an effect would sound like. It’s more convenient for me in rehearsal and when writing. One good option is to have both. Get a multi-fx to have cheap access to lots of effect, and then get dedicated pedals for the effects you’re unhappy with and that you end up using a ton.
@Mauitaoist5 жыл бұрын
For me it was hating programming all those things into these machines and then they break and you lose all your presets I'd rather just have stompboxes it's more fun and it's simpler

Eh, the Kemper toaster and remote both fit in the bag. Now they have the Stage which is even more compact. My excuse in using pedals to gig would be: individual units breaking down can be fixed/bypassed quickly plus it's harder for someone to steal my whole rig at once.

If you really tour or gig kemper stage or axe fx is the best way to go and it’s why so many pros use these. If your a local band playing covers or plays bars or small shows and calling it a tour going bar to bar in your state then maybe pedal board is ok. But most are not touring countries . I have and I can tell you axe and kemper takes so many issues out of the situation. And most backline sucks. They aren’t going to rent you coreblade by h&k or diezel head will end up old peavey head or something that’s garbage. So it’s better to worry more about playing than gear!

While there are no strict rules regarding signal flow on a pedalboard, there are certainly some common conventions… and while it all comes down to personal taste and aesthetic, I have to admit to being a bit dubious about the utility of putting a compressor at the end of the signal chain, post all gain and time-based effects. Let us know your thoughts regarding that, if you have a moment. BTW, just recently bought your book, looking forward to working with it!
