Hey Simon, long time watcher, just watching your hikes again as i really enjoy them from the US. I am curious what the book you were reading in your hammock was? Also I'd love to be able to do the pedders way someday, my homeland!

I attempted to walk the whole of Peddars Way in a single day. I'm not particularly fit (17 stone middle aged man) but have a strong will-power. I wasn't sponsored or anything like that, I just wanted to challenge myself - and certainly did It rained at the beginning of my journey and because of the wet tall grass, my boots got soaked through and never dried out. My feet started blistering on the badly rutted paths and I was forced to quit at the road intersection at T20:07 in your video (part 4), I was absolutely gutted being so close to the end. My little toes on both feet had blistered so badly that the skin was rolling around on them. Around a month later I tried again but starting from the other end at Holme-Next the Sea. Other than a stop at the Budgens in Castle Acre for lunch I only stopped briefly to patch up any hot spots on my feet and set off again. Around 12 hours in, my feet started blistering but this time I just kept going, my walking pace dropped off a cliff. I arrived in Knettishall Heath at around 11.30pm, walking through the pitch-dark forest with a headtorch. It took me 18 hours to complete the whole journey and it was gruelling, but one of my biggest ever achievements. I'm now thinking about doing the coastal path, its a similar distance, so studying your videos closely for tips and to help me decide if I want to do it. I'm also thinking about getting a tent and cooking equipment and having a go at multi-day hikes, perhaps along Angles Way which handily you also have video for.

There are great videographic moments interspersed: the wonderful variety of wild berries; the juxtaposition of a traditional windmill with an electric generating fan. I have enjoyed learning about every step of the peddlers' way. Alas, no Holy Water and no water in a Baptismal Font! What Denomination might such a Church have been? They certainly didn't cater to Pilgrimages.

@simonablokeinthewoods 6 жыл бұрын
Cheers Dave! Yes, the filter needs some more use and abuse really before I can properly comment on how good it is, but the principle is good - it’s also got a nifty system built in whereby it simply stops delivering water when the filter has reached the end of its life. Also made in UK, which I should have mentioned. I’ll do a proper review once it’s had some more use! Atb, Simon

@@simonablokeinthewoods Sadly, increased abstraction of water from the ground for irrigation and livestock (unheard of when I was a kid, when irrigation was something I only knew the meaning of from geography lessons - particularly telling as my father was a civil engineer working for the Essex Rivers Authority) have taken their toll on surface water availability in the UK, and particularly East Anglia. The Environment Agency, with the loss of all the local knowledge that went along with centralising such things, have much to answer for in that respect, as they issue the abstrction licenses. Lack of objections to developmeent on flood plains have also reduced absorbtion of water, as it is mostly regarded as a problem to be got rid of via (now overloaded) drainage, and wasted out to sea even when it doesn't create flooding problems where none used to exist.

We've made it to Anmer minque near houghton Hall, couldn't find anywhere to wild camp so called up a small campsite we passed earlier in the day and they kindly came and picked us up and for a fiver each are camping in bivvy bags in their garden! Plus we get bacon sarnies delivered to our bivvies in the morning! Haha! Got about 11 miles left. That 4 mile road of death from castle acre was awful! Great video. I love the peddars way. I believe there is a sizeable pond in fring. but like your streem it may have been arid due to the great summer we've had. Judging by the trees benind you you may have camped in sedgeford plantation or dovehill woods. My guess is sedgeford. What a lovely spot. great shelter from the hill raising from the SE. I've not compleated the way yet but thats set to change in Jan as I've signed up for the peddasway ultra. Hoping to do it in 10hrs so no stealth camping for me. We have to carry mandetory kit to support ourselfs for 13miles stages which is no problem but I'd like hot food. Do you know if dehydrated food cook in the self heating bag. Have you ever used then? Thank you and thanks for the sub! The Peddars Way is a great footpath - the best trail in the area in my opinion - there are loads of good spots along the way for a crafty stealth camp which is useful when walking the route. I always try to arrive late and leave early, and adopt the usual ‘leave no trace’ approach, I’ve never had any problems but obviously, it’s not without risk - the land either side of the path is all privately owned or forestry commission. Have fun! Atb, Simon

Another excellent video Simon! I think that despite my rather adventurous culinary nature, I'll give the curried sardine coffee a swerve! How you suffer for your art. I do believe that you are mistaken with your identification of the Muntjac call. Sounded more like Jenny Greenteeth on the prowl looking for a husband. Stay safe out there! Al

I hope you don't run into Black Shuck! (Shameless display of local knowledge :-) ) I was interested to see the number of flints on some of the tracks - possibly their presence supports the idea that the Peddars Way is or originated as) the trading route for those flints from Grimes Graves which were also traded south-westwards along the Icknield Way, and is of similar antiquity (even older than the Tumuli you remarked on, although bronze and neolithic ages overlapped by some considerable period).
@simonablokeinthewoods
@simonablokeinthewoods 5 жыл бұрын
Cheers Phil! Haha, not even a sighting!! Lots of flint along the way, probably a remnant of the Roman road built along the same route, although as you say, the route dates back to Neolithic times. I’m planning a bike ride along the Icknield Way for later in the year (probably not to film. Sometimes it’s nice not to have to worry about the camera all the time!)

Thank you! I carried my main camera (Canon 700d with Rode Videomic) fixed to its tripod in my hand the whole way, swapping from one hand to the other as fatigue crept in - I had to do that as I was stopping to set up shots etc very frequently. My GoPro was strapped to a chest harness and I packed batteries etc in my pack. So I didn’t count it in my pack weight. 👍

Hi Simon, do you have a rough idea of where you’ll camp, from looking at map/satellite images or do you just wing it and see what looks good on the ground on the day? (I’m a hiker who’s recently got into stealth camping and haven’t combined the two yet. Love your channel, probably the best of all the outdoors/camping channels I’ve seen.)
@simonablokeinthewoods
@simonablokeinthewoods 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I generally have a rough idea - I always spend time looking at maps before a trip - it’s a part of the planning that I really enjoy! I’ll look for spots that might be good for a camp and then see what’s it’s actually like when I get there - sometimes it’s ideal, sometimes I’ll find somewhere else. 👍

Ack! No Maggie 😕 Simon, what was that prickly looking thing around the 6.08 mark? Was it a horse chestnut by any chance still in it's casing? Also, was wondering what the red berries were at the 21:55 minute mark. Nice looking sleeping kit. Great video even if Maggie was missing. 😀

The prickly things are sweet chestnuts - not quite ready yet, but it’ll be a good year for them! The red berries are haws from the hawthorn. The walk is just too long for Maggie - she can manage 8-10 miles, but no further, she’s a lump and struggles with distance - a shame, I’d have liked to have her along! Atb, Simon

Simon, when using that small stove what do you do if you dont use all the fuel up if its full? how do you put it out or where do you store it?
@simonablokeinthewoods
@simonablokeinthewoods 6 жыл бұрын
Cheers John, the stove is packed with carbon felt which absorbs the meths, so if you extinguish it before it’s empty, the felt kind of holds the fuel. I didn’t have any leakage issues - it was just loose in the lid pocket of my pack. Probably better in a dedicated container though! Atb, Simon
