Director Pedro Almodóvar talks about his latest film at the BFI Southbank.
In Pain and Glory director Salvador Mallo is so preoccupied by various physiological and psychological ailments that he’s put his career on hold. Then a retrospective of his work leads him not only to remember his past, but to contact the long-estranged lead actor of an early seminal work... a troubled reunion with unexpected, fateful consequences.
Almodóvar, who also wrote the screenplay, is here at his most mature and reflective, exploring the lore of desire, creativity, addiction and memory through a single, somewhat self-centred character. Bold in its narrative structure, restrained yet expressive in its colours and compositions, and with intense, naturalistic performances, this is exemplary film artistry.

Yeah he’s awesome. He’s the cool grandpa we all wish to have. And also, although it should be noted that he is fluent (or at least fluent enough to get by in conversation) in English, one can see that he feels more comfortable speaking in his native tongue, and will often switch languages on a talk show, when he suddenly asked Penelope Cruz a question in Spanish for Parallel mothers.

It's weird because there's a director Q and A in the movie itself.

As a black person who admires his work my heart sank after his answer about including more black characters. Fetishised again. Great.

I'm not black, but that comment was very disappointing. I thought he was about to dig himself out of a hole but just made it worse

You know what? Antonio Banderas totally deserved the Oscar that year. Don't get me wrong: Joaquin Phoenix is great, one of the finest actors of his generation, BUT I will never be persuaded that the Joker was his best interpretation, nor that it deserved the statue. Joaquin Phoenix played a looser in the first half of the movie and put a lot of make up on the second half. He lost a lot of weight so that everybody said "Ohhhh" and "Ahhhh". By contrast, without make up and flashier moves, Antonio Banderas literally became his own character, he became someone else. I watch the Joker and I think: "Joaquin Phoenix is a good actor". I watch Dolor y Gloria and I forget that I am watching Antonio Banderas playing a character.
