I love the laugh you brought me today. When I had estimates for my Crown and wainscoting done I was shocked at the prices. But this is a buy once cry once investment in your house. After asking for a detailed estimate and pictures of their previous work from 3 professionals I went with the second highest bid. From the pictures I was sold on the guy who covered floors and explained to me the process. I made the right choice as his work looks great 4 years later. When I refer him I tell people he may not be the cheapest but he treats your home like it's his and cleans up the work area everyday.

Could you give a rough idea of what to expect to pay for a small living room to be done (crown and wainscoting)? I just bought a flat, and I'd love to have it done, but I fear it's going to be a fortune. May take me a long time to save.

First, I am a huge fan. I think that if you are going to start doing these react vids, you're going to have to actually get the product so we can see how much trash it actually is. I have watched enough of your vids to know that whatever you say is most likely right however, watching you watch a commercial and say that that is probably trash is just like me watching a commercial and thinking that's probably trash, make sense? Thanks for everything, your journey is inspiring.

Maybe peel and stick chair rail moulding? Or maybe YOU could invent that niche market? Maybe adjustable heights for different chairs heights? Like a high, middle, and low setting? Imagine a track that stays stationary with a decorative piece that covers the track with a few detents...that allow the decorative pieces to go in one of the 3 set heights. Pay some attractive people to make it look easy and let the money roll in! Haha!

Your attitude on tools is exactly correct! I bought my airless sprayer when I bought a home and wanted to paint all the ceiling and walls before moving in. I bought a very good quality airless sprayer and all the accessories for a fraction of what I would have paid a painter. I still have the sprayer! I have now used it to paint the exterior of my home and several other smaller projects such as trim, doors, etc. Wait until you do the job, buy the tools instead of paying the labor costs and you can then keep the tools OR sell them after the job is done and recoup some of your expense. I am going to wait for the spray on crown molding myself.

I actually could see a use for this. If they used the same adhesive that is on 3m command hooks, then it would be a viable option for renters who want crown, but aren't allowed to alter the house/apartment. It wouldn't be as nice as actual crown, but could be removed when moving out without damage. That's it though. No way for somewhere that was actually yours.

I am a DIYer... I did crown molding once, and i cheated on the corners by using medallions. I had one cut, i swear I shaved 15 times to get it to look perfect. None of the corners in the room were square. It's hard to deliberately cut wrong, to make it look gorgeous. I did three rooms, and they look lovely, not much caulking used, but I have no desire to do that again! My hat goes off to trim carpenters, you guys are incredible doing the things you do. Thank you for the videos. It is a great journey you are taking us on !

In a lifetime in Australia I have never seen crown molding and I spent my entire working life in the Architectural profession. We use plaster cornices which are available in hundreds of different profiles and look exactly the same as crown. What is different of course is the installation. They are installed using cornice adhesive (plaster product) and installed by a plasterer not a carpenter. I guess it's much the same although a plaster product is potentially more stable but we both know it's the substrate that presents the most difficulties.

In NZ, I've done a fair whack of fibrous cornice, have even run a bit in situ, but some places do have nice timber up, anything from a simple scotia to elaborate layers of various finishing lines in rare native timber, mostly in older high spec homes because wood was growing everywhere. I have been on one site a mate was working on where they had polystyrene finishing lines put up with caulked adhesive, it was all crooked and couldn't be patched, looked exactly like the price they paid for it. Only way to solve it is with a flamethrower.

What do you do around cabinets,book shelves,and fire places? On interiors cornice and crown molding are basically the same thing even though cornices tend to be more elaborate. I have always thought of cornices as an exterior feature. Best wishes from a tradie in the States.

I have a question about crown moulding nailing. Sometimes you come a across a place where there is no stud or rafter to nail to. The moulding needs a nail in a particular spot to pull it tight to the wall or ceiling but there is no wood behind to attached it. How do you negotiate that problem?….placing a nail just into the drywall the moulding will just pull out.
@stevemcginn9200
@stevemcginn9200 2 жыл бұрын
Angle nail it, 2 nails shoot at an angle( think like a V shape) and that will pull the piece against the wall enough to "bridge" between wall studs/ ceiling joists. Another option is to use a cant block. A block of wood cut on a 45 degree wedge cut that can be screwed and glued to the wall then the crown is nailed over the top of that.....basically filling the dead space behind the crown with a nailer. Good luck with your crown.
