That is an incredible point! No one talks about what it takes to remove peel and stick wall paper or vinyl flooring or how long it can last or stay up if used in other ways. I didn't even consider thickness as a factor in addition to the adhesive. Thank you so much for sharing your experience - really appreciate it!

I use it to line the insides of my dressers so my clothes don't snag on wood and for a fun pop of color. It is super hard to remove if it's been in place for a long time. I can't imagine how much work cleaning adhesive off an entire wall(s) would be😐

I just removed 3 layers of peel-and-stick vinyl tiles. I've done quite a bit of work myself in my home and this was one of the WORST jobs I ever did. Even after I finally got them all up with the help of a heat gun, there is a very thick layer of extremely sticky glue left. I own my home so was able to let it dry and get ceramic tile installed, but no way are the vinyl tiles renter-friendly.

I should have asked about that in my last apartment! It was in sorry shape when I got it. My father and I sanded and bleached the floors, put in a backsplash and installed ceramic tiles on the kitchen floor, painted, fixed all the cracks and holes in the walls and floors, replaced the cabinets, even soundproofed a wall and replaced the broken toilet. That apartment got quite an upgrade because of me, and we should've been paid for that labor when I moved out. Didn't even occur to me. Whoever got that place after me really lucked out.

Years ago we bought a house where someone previously had used those peel and stick carpet tiles in the living and dinning rooms. Then someone later had tried to remove it. We were stuck with two rooms with patchwork effect of tiles across part of each room, some clean hardwood flooring in areas and some floor covered in black goop from the glue residue. We were struggling with getting the mess up until by accident we found something that got the goop up fairly easier. One of our dogs had an accident and we used a cheap pet urine cleaner from a dollar store for the accident and noted that it loosened up the glue residue as well - better than the Goop Be Gone we were trying to use.

Don't forget the fumes that peelable wallpaper, flooring etc can give off and not ideal for small rooms for infants, children, animals such as birds that could be sensitive, or if you have respiratory issues or allergies. Adequate ventilation is needed to vent these fumes. The fumes come from the adhesives and plastic properties of the product. Also, to remove products a hairdryer on low may help soften the adhesive on sticky backed plastic. Wear a suitable respirator if using this method

Lots of experience here, get permission! Peel and stick put on correctly is next to permanent and can be harder to remove than simply cutting out the floor/wall and replacing it. It’s not easy to remove like say, wallpaper. It could cost you and your landlord big bucks to take out. Not renter friendly.

As a renter, you have to be careful about which peel and stick you use. 'Get permission' is always the best way to go about things. There is an easy stick shelf liner that DOES peel off with out any issues. It is for cabinet shelves, but I used on an old, beat up microwave cart (sides as well as shelves) and it works fine. But - I don't have kids so it isn't getting banged about. Peel and stick tiles can be wonderful if you take your time and install it correctly. It can be cheaper or it can be very expensive. But it isn't coming up easy peesey. It isn't really 'renter friendly'.

Put down rosin paper to cover the floor then the peel and stick tile for renter. Use double dided tape on the paper to the floor. Never grout in a rental. Contact paper is an option for a temp backslash and its cheaper than p&s backslash tiles. Still always get permission for any decor in a rental. If changing light fixtures , always save the originals as they are permanent, unless you leave the new. I've done this with light fixtures and shower heads , faucets, cabinet hardware . I've even done wall to wall carpet with double sided tape. As long as you have the original permanent fixtures to put back ? You can take all of your fixtures with you. You can even change out the light switch plates. Always put back to original state upon moving unless you and your landlord have made another agreement. My sister in law put in new fixtures when the old ones were all beat up. She tried to take them with her and was faced with losing her security since she threw away the old ones. Her original landlord know bit he sold the property and the new landlord had no such agreement with her. In cases like that you should always get it in writing or as an amendment to the lease agreement.

If there is any texture to the area, like a sheetrock wall with multiple layers of paint, contact paper doesn't stick. I think that's why the peel and stick has gotten so popular. It just sucks that it might take paint off with it.

"Renter friendly" command hooks: stuck to the wall, hung 5 oz thing, fell off the wall, ripped 2" of paint and spackle, creating sizeable hole, took 30 min to fix (reapply spackle and repaint). Regular hook with nail: held on and tiny nail hole took 5 min to fix. Added bonus: regular hook cost 25% of command hook. The truth: "renter friendly" products are a ripoff. Yes, command hooks may NOT be renter-friendly, especially if the drywall is not well done. It’ll easily rip off drywall if something falls off and pulls the hook/strip with it. If your home has a lot of humidity, the command hook loses its effectiveness, and it falls off the wall, sometimes pulling drywall off the wall. You’re better off using a regular hook with a nail. It’s sturdier, and it’s easier to fix at moveout with a tiny hole versus ripped off drywall.

Roofing paper works great and protects the floor under and easy to remove. This system has been used since glue down linoleum. I have a hundred year old building with a maple wood floor under layers (3) of linoleum and peel and stick. I removed all flooring, to get to the maple floor. I had my kitchen floor done with a peel and stick that looks great , but everytime I drop something it leaves a dent, which means it must be too thin. I wish I’d looked for something thicker instead of trying to save money. The backsplash looks amazing, and really updated my kitchen as I’ve been in the same apartment almost 25 years. I also did my bathroom floor, my landlord is also my boss and I was able to have all of my peel and stick tiles put down by contractors who work for our company. That really made all the difference in achieving the professional look I wanted.

I used nice peel and stick with grout to cover over my ugly 80's bathroom vinyl. It was cheap, easy, and quick. Best of all it's more durable than the builders grade original flooring and it looks great!

So you don’t have to take up the vinyl flooring? You put the peel and stick over it?
@flaggov6949
@flaggov6949 Жыл бұрын
@@latoyaamb3r That depends on a number of things. Is the vinyl floor the original layer? It's possible that the vinyl you see is already a second layer. I probably wouldn't add a third. I'd remove both layers, so the peel-n-stick can be the first. Some old cheap vinyl was very soft, almost cushiony. I wouldn't use grout over that because there could be enough movement when people step hard for the grout to crack. What condition is the previous vinyl in? If there are holes or the vinyl isn't adhering well anymore, it may be better to remove the old vinyl. In my case, there was one edge under the counter about 1. 5" by 15" that was curling up. My peel-n-stick was the same thickness as the old vinyl, so I used a straight edge to cut out a 2 x 17 inch wide rectangle from the old vinyl where it curled. I made sure that none of the old edges needed reglued and cut a matching strip from a peel-n-stick tile to fill the hole. It looked silly, but since it was the same thickness it filled the hole to the same height. I gave a day or two to make sure the strip stuck well, and then I used peel-n-stick over the whole floor including the patch. I also removed the toilet so the tiles could go under which will make it easy to remove the toilet if I ever need to in the future. I did not caulk the toilet--if there's ever a problem with the wax ring, I want to see the water (rather than force the water under the tile or subfloor), so I can repair the problem. I used caulk around the tub and under the cabinet toe kick, so water can't leak under the tiles. It looked fantastic and was really easy. One tip, peel-n-stick tile is difficult to remove, so lay out all the tiles ahead, so you can make sure repeating patterns match (if it has a geometric pattern) or don't match (if it's supposed to look natural like stone).

I did a flooring before but it was not a peel and stick, it was wood planks that fit into each other.

I dont even care that it's not renter friendly. I've been in my home for nearly 5 years and probably will be here another 2 or 3 so they can keep the deposit. This house is DATED and they didn't try to improve anything but the paint before I moved in.

Very helpful as we now shop to replace our click together floating floor after only 2 years. Did not realize a floating floor is a terrible choice for a mobile home, what with all the flexing such a structure allows. Even a little has been enough to pop & chip each plank. Truly hope peel & stick will actually stay put. Maybe in your next video you can address different types of dwellings suitable for peel & stick tiles as well as what type of sub flooring is best. This has been an expensive lesson.

I love the use of white as the main color and the light shades of gray as the highlight. I'd love to work a light shade of blue into my kitchen, even though gray seems to be the way to go with white cabinets.
