Mikko Franck conducts the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France performing "Solveig' Song", from "Peer Gynt Suite n°2" by Edvard Grieg. Orchestral bis performed during the concert recorded live on 26 April 2019 at the Philharmonie de Paris.
In 1874, the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen asked his fellow countryman Edvard Grieg to write the music for Peer Gynt, a theatrical adaptation of his own poetic drama. The 34 year old composer wrote, not without difficulty, 23 different pieces for the theatrical work. Amongst these 23 compositions, four were assembled in 1888 to form the Suite no.1 and five others in 1891 for the Suite no.2. Several of these works have since entered the Pantheon of music history, notably Solveig's Song, from the Suite no.2.
This andante is the only version of a work initially to be sung. Grieg replaced with violins the soprano voice from Ibsen's original theatrical work.
