You look at each other knowing that the other person's survival requires your own death. (The rule change enabling both K and P to make it out alive was completely unprecedented.) I love that Suzzane Collins made Peeta the main lead , especially since I was a wattpad girl during that time where most of the stories had the 'bad boys' as the lead and the kind ones were boring !! As a 14 year old girl reading the books for the first time.. it really gave me high expectations of what i wanted in a partner..that being good and kind in a cruel world is not boring or a weakness , but in fact a superpower.. something i always think about is how Haymitch told Katniss she didn´t deserve Peeta, but in my opinion she really DID deserve him. She went trough so much trauma even before the games and even tho she had Gale, he could never comfort her the way Peeta did. In the first book, she always seemed to have a huge crush on him before really starting the hunger games but I definitely think the hunger games brought them together quicker and it made their connection stronger. She always seemed into him rather than Gale. In the movies, it made it seem like Gale was a love interest but in the books not really, it feels like she tried to force herself to like him like that because that’s what everyone expected of them. At the end of the day he always had her heart not Gale. She ofc didn’t realize she loved him more than anything besides her family until the catching fire book/and movie but let’s be honest she was always the person to want to be in denial and push people away because she didn’t want to get so attached for them to taken away from her through death like her dad

Hmm. I think we see Katniss falling in love with Gale more in the books. Except, it's not romantic, she loves him like a brother. It even says multiple times how similar they look, and how anyone would confuse them for siblings. She learns to care about him and all his little siblings and mom. But Peeta? Unlike the movies, we actually get access to her inner monologue, and I don't think I saw her loving him except for the force field part in the second book. What I got from it was regret for lying to him about loving him. Maybe I just don't remember 😅

(Prim was the only person she believed she could love unconditionally) Yet she never could begin to fathom that trust and compassion could come from anyone else in the entire world. For anyone else she came across and therefore contemplated only did something remotely resembling kindness must come with an emotional bargaining chip. If the old adage says “you can’t get something for nothing”. Katniss lived in a world where you at least pay double plus interest later. Pure vulnerability and care leads to dire consequences. Peeta helped her transcend her way of thinking and feeling. His emotional availability lead to her revelation that survival does not mean she has to sacrifice her humanity outside of Prim. The significance of him being in her life can not be understated. As even if the story had not concluded with them being romantic partners. His offering of friendship provided her start into her gradual transition as the woman she would become without it ever interfering with her essence. She was always independent and resilient and that never wavered. But none the less Peeta’s demonstration of selflessness allowed her to realize being open with vulnerability is not a weakness. Nor does compassion have to come at a steep price. He rocked her to her core mentally and emotionally and it was then she realized a beautiful friendship had blossomed. And then later love. :)

When I discovered theses books and character I was chocked because I was Katniss and my boyfriend was perfectly like Peeta. I felt exactly like she felt and hearing Haymitch say “you could live a hundred lives and still not deserve that boy” hurt so bad. As Katniss, I had really bad trauma through the past years and he was there to help me heal, to support me and we needed each other. Now we’re still together and I never felt happier in a relationship, we belong together. I still feel like I could live a million lives and still don’t deserve him but maybe he was meant for me, to help me go through all of this in life… I wish every person reading this comment to find their peeta, it’s not always easy but you can count on each other in the end…

I agree. But what I personally love most about it is that the text embraces compassion (not just Peeta but he is the most prominent character of it) without ever coming across as sappy. I think some pieces of fiction seem to not want to take empathy seriously. Almost as if they are asking the audience to be in on the joke of it and even encourage to join in at laughing at it. Or to use the counter-intuitive mindset that healthy and happy relationships are deemed boring. The Hunger Games flat out rejects these notions. The books and films of the THG do not shy away from championing compassion and sympathny as precious. It even uses subtle nods at calling out mainstream fiction for it's lack of appreciation towards it. Especially for a leading male character. While THG is not the only piece in the world of literature to do this. It is exceedingly rare in this day and age. I continue to not only be thankful to Suzanne Collins for writing this series with a empathetic leading man and the leading lady growing to value this man as the greatest joy in her life. But to the filmmakers of this series for not attempting to rehash it as it fit the mainstream vision of "dark and gritty is more interesting."

A lot of people who haven't read the books (and I'm sure even some who have) don't like Peeta either as a character or a love interest for Katniss because they deem him weak simply bc in the movie he's not, what, tall or aggressive or a fighter or something. Basically, he's not masculine enough for them. But...he is?? Physically, anyway. Going by the books, he's stocky, broad-shouldered, strong...very traditionally masculine looking. He just has a gentler personality, and even then, it's not even like that's uncommon among guys. His personality is completely normal. I agree that I so appreciate Collins for writing him that way. I love a good anti-hero myself and I think these different types of characters all have their place in literature and film, but I think it was really important to have a character as wholesome and goodhearted as he is be "it" for Katniss. In a world as bleak as theirs, there had to be hope at the end. And as Katniss says, what she needs is a dandelion in the spring, something to remind her life can be good again. I just adore their relationship so much. I find less-than-functional dynamics fun to watch and read about of course but I also love when healthy relationships are done so right bc it really makes me feel that couple will stand the test of time. These two feel _real_ and have so much depth. It really feels organic and earned and meaningful.

I also remember reading a comment about how Collins completely switched the traditional gender roles of a relationship- Katniss is the protector and leader and Peeta lets her take the lead and supports her when she needs it. One thing I like about the first movie (that isn’t in the book!) is when he goes to take the bow from Katniss to go hunting and then he’s like “jk you’re the fighter not me lol” and goes to gather berries instead. I honestly can’t see how anyone would choose Gale over Peeta for Katniss, she and the boy with the bread are meant to be

@@Silver54ful YES to all of this, I really hate how Peeta’s role in the movies was so diminished. Sometimes I feel like Peeta is more of the main character than Katniss, the rebellion would have never started if he wasn’t there. This especially shows in the first book when he tells Katniss he “wanted to show that he wasn’t a piece in their Games,” while she didn’t understand and just thought of winning to keep herself alive. Katniss even describes him as better than all the victors of the Games because he was truly a good person. Katniss may have been the symbol of the rebellion, but behind it all, Peeta was the heart of it.

I've always been Peeta and Katniss all the way, there were times that I felt Peeta was in many ways the likable main lead while Katniss frustrated me at times, but it was understandable because if everything thing she went through and plus it made me like their dynamic even more. Gale was never and could never be the one Katniss wanted and needed. Peeta was also pretty funny in the books. It's been years since I've read all the books and now the movies.
