This is what Peeta was afraid of. Remember in the first film before they went into the arena, Peeta told Katniss that he didn't want the Capitol to change who he is. That's exactly what ended up happening to him.

The bunker people/District 13 are actually such well-written secondary morally grey antagonists; it's completely irritating for us, the audience, to watch them denounce our beloved Peeta as a traitor and not even consider the possibility that the Capitol is forcing him to say those things (and boast that they would NEVER sacrifice their moral integrity under torture), but it's not unexpected. It's actually completely realistic that they'd be lacking in critical thinking skills because they live in a LITERAL echo chamber 😅 underground, letting their vengeance brew (something that radicalized Gale quickly). Apart from not really knowing Peeta the way we/Katniss does, do they really know anything about the suffering the other Districts went through? I don't think so, since they've never been forced to sacrifice their young to the Hunger Games. They might be hyper-vigilant regarding the Capitol's evil, but they can't truly empathize with those who have suffered it for 75 years, and that's why their propos are so tone-deaf.

Snow's warning during the rescue mission "It's the things we love most that destroy us. I want you to remember I said that", was basically Snow telling her, "Well you finally convinced me, but unfortunatly for you, I took that away from you, and now he is going to kill for everything you have done."

You're right, the capitol did know about district 13... they had an agreement that 13 would stay hidden and pretend they had been destroyed, and the capitol would leave them alone so 13 didn't nuke the capitol. The capitol also thought 13 would eventually die out.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman does such a great job with Plutarch! The expressions when people respond the way he pushes them… Effie in the scene you mention, Coin in multiple places… I was about to say Katniss when she said “Make sure you get it on camera” if she got killed. In that case, I think it was more a matter of satisfaction that she was (or was becoming) the badass rebel he thought she would be.

A really intricate detail I always enjoy in the costuming for this movie is the clothing Peeta wears in the broadcasts. Take a look at the first broadcast again at 9:22 - the collar is amazing, it looks like a knife against his throat. The point actually presses against his throat when he speaks. Peeta was being imprisoned and forced onto the broadcasts by the Capitol, which means he was being styled and dressed by them. The outfits were in line with where he left off in the last film, so he is in all white first (at his most pure and symbolic), and in the second broadcast at 22:49 he is in all black with the white peeking through in the centre. Finally, in the third broadcast at 27:08, Peeta is in all grey - at his most beaten down. The collars and ties reference him being literally collared and in a chokehold by the Capitol.

13 was graphite mining…but in reality they were the nuclear district. After the Dark Days District 13 basically pointed nukes at the Capitol and said “attack us and we’ll nuke you”. The Capitol bombed the surface part of 13 to rubble and told the Districts it didn’t exist anymore and they left them alone. District 13 built themselves back up.

District 13's industry was nuclear power. They have nuclear weapons but not enough people to fight the Capitol on the ground. ETA: The Dam fight was in District 5 (home of the redhead from the first movie) and the trees/bombs were District 7 (Johanna's district). ETA2: Philip Seymour Hoffman died while Part 2 was being filmed. They had to CGI him into one or two scenes in the next film. Very sad.

You give off ride-or-die vibes with your favorite characters. You will take up their causes and hate their rivals even more than they do, lol. Like, Peeta is too nice a guy, so you will hate Gale *for* him. It's kinda hilarious. In all honesty, though, Gale has Katniss too figured out to still be hung up on her. He knows her better than anybody and knows how she feels about him better than she does. He knows she's compassionate and hates to hurt him. He knows she's grateful for everything he's done for her and her family, that that makes her feel like she *should* love him and that she feels guilty that she doesn't. He also knows she is actually in love with Peeta. Thus, he *should* be trying to lessen her feelings of obligation, and either getting some distance for his own good or reassuring her that his friendship for her and her family isn't dependent on her reciprocating his romantic feelings. Instead, he spends a lot of time playing on her compassion and need to have someone around. It isn't kind or honorable, especially given how messed up Katniss actually is. The best thing he does here is sign up to be the first person on the squad who brings Peeta back to her. Boy does not know how to bow out gracefully. At least he doesn't just want to get the girl by default? Ugh. No. Thirteen should have tried harder to get Peeta and the others out to begin with. Rescuing him when there was an opportunity was just basic. Gale only gets half a point for it.

Jennifer Lawrence is an amazing actress and her performance in this movie saga is how she became a household name. So, the fact that she had to act as Katniss being a horrible actor during the propo scene has always made me laugh. The author Suzanne Collins also deserves a lot of credit because she does something really clever with the characters' names that hint at what their roles are in the story. Katniss is a type of edible hearty root and Everdeen is a reference to the forest. That's a reference to the idea that she spreads the roots of rebellion through the safety of the forest. She's also known as the Mockingjay, which is a bird that was never supposed to exist because one of the Capitals mutt birds, the Jabberjay, escaped and bred with the natural mocking bird. To the Capital the Mockingjay is an abomination that occurred because of the Capital's negligence. To the districts it has always been a sign of rebellion, long before Katniss took on the persona. Gale is obviously a reference to unpredictable wind, and Hawthorne is a type of tree. Gale is always with the Mockingjay in the battlefield because she needs that wind to keep her flying and a place to perch in the tree when she needs rest. They are the essence of rebellion. Peeta is a reference to the type of bread, and Mellark is a play on the word malarky, which means meaningless talk or nonsense. When Peeta is captured by the Capital he is used as a propaganda spokesman who spouts a bunch of nonsense to attempt to keep the districts in line. But, when Katniss and he are out of the arena, they provide the sustenance each needs to persevere through the trauma and find peace.

They didn't really explain it too well in the films, but the Capitol and District 13 came to an agreement after the first Rebellion because District 13 was the only one who could actually pose a threat. 13's resource was nuclear materials. They're the ones who supplied the Capitol with bombs and such. So they're the only ones who posed a genuine threat. So they came to an agreement to go underground and let the other districts believe they had been destroyed; in return, 13 wouldn't attack the Capitol.

I appreciated very much what you said about Gale manipulating Katniss and making her feel guilty to make her kiss him. Because that's exactly what he does. And a lot of people don't realize it and say "he's done nothing wrong yet or at all" etc... But in my book, IF YOU KNOW (and he clearly does) that someone only kisses you, when feeling guilty for you or you're feeling sad, and you keep doing stuff like that... You're using it to your advantage. You're manipulating them ! Also if you know, like he said, that the one you love "only gives you attention when you're in pain", then YOU KNOW they don't love you. That is not love ! So stop being openly jealous and make her feel guilty. She shouldn't feel guilty that she doesn't share his feelings. That's not a bad thing. She's done nothing wrong. But he has absolutely no right to blame her for not feeling the way he does, or for her wanting to protect Peeta and or care or love Peeta ! In the previous movie, when she wants to leave district 12 and go into the forest, and he says : You me and your fiance ? That always made me mad ! Because he knows what's happening and that they are forced to play a part (which hurts Peeta too !! But HE had the maturity and empathy to apologize to Katniss etc...) ! And still, Gale makes comments like that ! So What ? She shouldn't try to protect and make Peeta leave with them, too because he's jealous ?? In that same movie, he asked her if she loved him, Katniss answered that he knew how she felt, AND that she was in no place to think about someone like that. Meaning I don't love you, I don't think about love, let us be friends ! And what did he do ??? Kissed her without consent, saying he had to do it even once. That's sooooo bad ! I can't understand people not seeing how Gale is problematic. Because that's just the movies... I could add way more context... with the books.

District 13 produced guns, airplanes and other weapons for the Capitol. When they were destroyed, this line of production moved to District two. You find out the significance of "the hanging tree" song in the prequel movie the ballad of songbirds and snakes. Just got to what katniss thinks of the song in mockingjay book, she thinks its told from the dead mans point of view, who wants his love to hang in the tree with him so they can both be free. Shes not correct though. I look forward to your reaction to the next 2 movies!

District 13 was known for mining Graphite, but they were a center of Nuclear capabilities. It corresponds to Quebec and points east in Canada. (Panem is set in North America. District 12 runs from western NYS through Kentucky down the Appalachian highlands. Thus the coal. The Capital is in NE Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming. All the rest map to various US state regions which would have remained after the sea levels rose from global warming and swallowed the coastal powerhouses like the Eastern Seaboard from Boston to Savannah and all of the megacities in between. As well as LA/San Francisco/Portland/Seattle on the West coast.

I have been Team Peeta since reading the books. I understand the Gale “hate” for how he tries to manipulate Katniss’ emotions in the movie. I also realize that he is a traumatized teen/young man too, especially after the bombing of District 12. While I still do not particularly like Gale, I have some compassion for what he suffered at the hands of the Capitol and the rage/hate that fuels his fight against it and makes him a willing acolyte of Coin’s strategy.
