Randy’s step mom was my chorus teacher at Memorial Middle School in Middlebury CT in the early 70’s. This was after Bill Rhodes remarried after divorcing Delores (Bill and Delores were Randy’s biological parents). Bill was the Band teacher at the same school. When Randy passed away in 1982 there was a special memorial service at the Middlebury church that I remember attending (the main service for Randy was here in San Bernardino where his mom lived and that’s where he is buried).

My dad was a Baptist minister. I had the same bans in my household growing up as well. When I was much older and out of the house, my dad and I were going to a ballgame and I had on my music which included this song. He was enjoying the song and he asked me who was singing. I told him it was Ozzy Osbourne. He was shocked. What I learned that day is that people in older generations looked at the messengers and wouldn't listen to the message. It happened with my parents in regards to their parents with Elvis and The Beatles, etc. It happened with my generation with Queen and Ozzy and many others.
@aura812953 ай бұрын
Yep - the messages of the generations usually wanting similar things expressing confusion and pain over the problems inherited from previous generations. Older generations having learned to navigate get more resistant to change while more progressive youngsters become "rebellious" wanting to correct the wrongs that were handed down to them. And so it goes round and round with little tweaks here and there through time cycles...

Randy Rhoads got a writing credit on every track on this LP and his much brighter and complex neo-classical guitar was a big departure Sabbath's sonic sludge. In fact when this song was released in 1980 I recall a wave of "OK, who really plays the guitar?" cuz people were in disbelief that some guy no one had heard of had basically re-written the rulebook for rock guitar. But it makes sense because Randy started on classical guitar at a young age and took piano lessons from his mom (who owned a music school Randy eventually taught guitar at while in HS) to build music his theory chops. And some ways the little fills that Randy throws in are more amazing than the solos. RIP.

I think it was around 1982 when after a concert Ozzy took a piss on a section of the Alamo. He was banned from San Antonio TX. For 10 years. In 1986 I had to drive to Austin to see him in concert. Mettalica opened for Ozzy, the stadium was not up to the task! Large tiles started falling from the ceiling (like 20’x20’ tiles) during Metallica’s set! It was insanity! I was in the second deck right next to the right of the stage, and people were literally ripping out the chairs from the flooring and throwing them over the balcony into the lower crowd while the ceiling tiles were falling. First responders were on site giving first aid and hauling people out for injuries. It was truly insanity. one of the wildest concerts I’ve ever attended. I love that when people get into the syllables they realize it's not what they initially think it might be. This isn't the full song....why'd they cut out lyrics, they weren't controversial or in need of censoring. In The Big Push's War Pigs mash up, this solo is woven in there. I think others have probably told you that. My 21 year old (19 at the time) took my Ozzy CD with him when he went to college, so I got him a retro-looking Vinyl, Cassette, CD, Bluetooth, AM/FM unit and Diary of a Madman LP, *I still don't have my Ozzy CD* . Mama, I'm Coming Home (this one hurts a bit, but I lost my mom in 2008), No More Tears, See You On The Other Side (Same Again for me about my Mama, but also about others), Close My Eyes Forever (with Lita Ford), I Just Want You, Road To Nowhere, Changes, God is Dead?,

Love me some Ozzy!!! Yes this is Ozzy solo! He’s so misunderstood. The Sabbath was darker but his solo work is stellar. Ozzy was fired from Black Sabbath because of his drug use. He is a great songwriter. His best bud was Randy Rhoads on guitar. Unfortunately, Randy was killed in a plane accident. They were in Florida at a repair shop and a few of the people on the tour bus want to catch a plane to Miami, (I think) to avoid time for bus repairs. There was a small airport very close by and they talked a local pilot to fly the small plane without airports permission. First trip successful, with an and upon take off the pilot dipped a wing toward the bus. Randy was the last trip along with one other. This time when they dipped the wing, the wing hit the bus. Ozzy and Sharon were on the bus, sleeping. The plane exploded. All on board were incinerated instantly. Randy was 25. Nothing to even bury. Ozzy, Sharon, Kelly and Jack have a live show on KZbin a couple times a week. Ozzy is funny as hell and extremely intelligent now that he’s clean for several years. Once in a while, Randy’s name comes up. You can see his expression change, his head lowers and he’s very somber and emotional. Ozzy’s solo work is incredible. He still writes and records but cannot tour, as he is coping with Parkinson’s, which runs in his family. He is to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year as a solo artist. He’s really sad though because he’s embarrassed to appear with the uncontrollable Parkinson’s tremors. The bat thing was that someone threw a bat onstage, he thought it was fake and bit the head off. It was real and he had to have a series of rabies shots. My favorite Ozzy song and video is Dreamer, he wrote just after 9/11. Released a month later. Beautiful song, great video. Arrangement by Zakk Wylde. I hope you react to it. You will be so surprised.
