Randy’s step mom was my chorus teacher at Memorial Middle School in Middlebury CT in the early 70’s. This was after Bill Rhodes remarried after divorcing Delores (Bill and Delores were Randy’s biological parents). Bill was the Band teacher at the same school. When Randy passed away in 1982 there was a special memorial service at the Middlebury church that I remember attending (the main service for Randy was here in San Bernardino where his mom lived and that’s where he is buried).

My dad was a Baptist minister. I had the same bans in my household growing up as well. When I was much older and out of the house, my dad and I were going to a ballgame and I had on my music which included this song. He was enjoying the song and he asked me who was singing. I told him it was Ozzy Osbourne. He was shocked. What I learned that day is that people in older generations looked at the messengers and wouldn't listen to the message. It happened with my parents in regards to their parents with Elvis and The Beatles, etc. It happened with my generation with Queen and Ozzy and many others.
@aura812952 күн бұрын
Yep - the messages of the generations usually wanting similar things expressing confusion and pain over the problems inherited from previous generations. Older generations having learned to navigate get more resistant to change while more progressive youngsters become "rebellious" wanting to correct the wrongs that were handed down to them. And so it goes round and round with little tweaks here and there through time cycles...

My grandad was a baptis minister and I grew up in a baptist family - But I am Danish and Danish Baptists are alot more "laid back" and moderate with their faith than american Baptists usually are. I grew up listening to 1960-´70 psych rock and later dove headfirst into hard rock and metal music. My mom wasn't thrilled at first, but as you describe, it just took some explaining and sharing of lyrics from various songs and bands, then she was fine with it. :D

Randy Rhoads got a writing credit on every track on this LP and his much brighter and complex neo-classical guitar was a big departure Sabbath's sonic sludge. In fact when this song was released in 1980 I recall a wave of "OK, who really plays the guitar?" cuz people were in disbelief that some guy no one had heard of had basically re-written the rulebook for rock guitar. But it makes sense because Randy started on classical guitar at a young age and took piano lessons from his mom (who owned a music school Randy eventually taught guitar at while in HS) to build music his theory chops. And some ways the little fills that Randy throws in are more amazing than the solos. RIP.

There were distinct genres of 'soft rock", 'hard rock", "heavy metal" (ozzy) , "hair bands" , "punk rock', "death metal", "classic rock", and "Southern Rock'. These were all during the 80s/90s brought in "Grunge Rock". Each had it's own fans and hair/makeup/fashion styles for them all. If you said you liked "rock" , there was a whole conversation that followed as you named off bands and bonded or decided you did not like somebody based on who they listened to and loved or hated. :)

This one, of course, is Ozzy's most famous songs. I like the fact that a lot of times you do some deeper cuts, so I'm going to suggest a couple of songs by Ozzy that don't really get the love they deserve. I think it was around 1982 when after a concert Ozzy took a piss on a section of the Alamo. He was banned from San Antonio TX. For 10 years. In 1986 I had to drive to Austin to see him in concert. Mettalica opened for Ozzy, the stadium was not up to the task! Large tiles started falling from the ceiling (like 20’x20’ tiles) during Metallica’s set! It was insanity! I was in the second deck right next to the right of the stage, and people were literally ripping out the chairs from the flooring and throwing them over the balcony into the lower crowd while the ceiling tiles were falling. First responders were on site giving first aid and hauling people out for injuries. It was truly insanity. one of the wildest concerts I’ve ever attended. And then Ozzie was absolutely on fire for his set.

Love me some Ozzy!!! Yes this is Ozzy solo! He’s so misunderstood. The Sabbath was darker but his solo work is stellar. Ozzy was fired from Black Sabbath because of his drug use. He is a great songwriter. His best bud was Randy Rhoads on guitar. Unfortunately, Randy was killed in a plane accident. They were in Florida at a repair shop and a few of the people on the tour bus want to catch a plane to Miami, (I think) to avoid time for bus repairs. There was a small airport very close by and they talked a local pilot to fly the small plane without airports permission. First trip successful, with an and upon take off the pilot dipped a wing toward the bus. Randy was the last trip along with one other. This time when they dipped the wing, the wing hit the bus. Ozzy and Sharon were on the bus, sleeping. The plane exploded. All on board were incinerated instantly. Randy was 25. Nothing to even bury. Ozzy, Sharon, Kelly and Jack have a live show on KZbin a couple times a week. Ozzy is funny as hell and extremely intelligent now that he’s clean for several years. Once in a while, Randy’s name comes up. You can see his expression change, his head lowers and he’s very somber and emotional. Ozzy’s solo work is incredible. He still writes and records but cannot tour, as he is coping with Parkinson’s, which runs in his family. He is to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year as a solo artist. He’s really sad though because he’s embarrassed to appear with the uncontrollable Parkinson’s tremors. The bat thing was that someone threw a bat onstage, he thought it was fake and bit the head off. It was real and he had to have a series of rabies shots. My favorite Ozzy song and video is Dreamer, he wrote just after 9/11. Released a month later. Beautiful song, great video. Arrangement by Zakk Wylde. I hope you react to it. You will be so surprised.

Ozzy's lyrics are always very insightful. The image and name of Black Sabbath was just a good way to shock. Ozzy is a really nice guy who comes across as dim but he's not. Listen to the lyrics of War Pigs from Black Sabbath - it's not about doing evil it's about the evil that men do. In his solo work, his lyrics were the same way. It's so nice in the video that they show Randy Rhoades going up to heaven since he tragically died at 25 in 1982.

Ozzy is amazing! Many people viewed metal music as mindless and just noise without every listening to the lyrics and the messages being conveyed. They simply looked at the band and judged them quickly, which is common but you miss out on a lot in doing so. Ozzy was heavy into drugs, looked like Satan and so many just assumed he was into hedonistic stuff, not serious and just twisted. In some ways he was very twisted but the man wrote songs that had deep meaning with a metal bend. Many metal acts did - Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest and others wrote some incredible music with very deep meaning that so many kids growing up with it needed to hear who were going through their own shit and found this music to relate to them. This is Ozzy solo. We are all on this CRAZY TRAIN and it is a long ride. Randy Rhoads on guitar is just incredible. RIP Randy!

I'm very fortunate to have grown up in a Christian home with a lot of freedom. One time, before I could drive, my pastor-dad drove me and a friend 3 hours to a Kiss concert, and he sat outside and read newspapers and magazines while we were in the concert. Me and my friend laughed when there were church people demonstrating outside with signs that said "KISS: Knights In Satan's Service" and things like that. We knew that wasn't what Kiss was about. Prior to that, my dad had taken me to two Adam Ant concerts that were also a few hours away from home, and then when I could drive my friends and I went to all kinds of hair metal concerts. At another Kiss concert, there were some more church people outside, but they were really sincere in simply wanting people to know Christ, and they weren't all preachy. All that to say, I really grew to enjoy rock and heavy metal, and while some of it can really be quite raunchy, there is also a great message in some of it, as in this song. I know my parents *really* didn't like my music and my lifestyle, but they raised me with the freedom to learn to know Christ for myself, and when I got older I got to know Him and not religion. "Save the Weak" by Britny Fox (an all-dude hair metal band) is another song with a great message.

Also "Wasted Years" by Iron Maiden. There are many, many more, but my mind is drawing a blank right now. 😆😆

It always amuses me that Ozzy is hard to understand when he speaks, but quite understandable when being musical.

On one of the episodes of "Ozzy and Jack's World Detour," Ozzy talks about biting the head off the bat. Ozzy stated that he didn't know it was a live bat when he did it. Ozzy is also very religious (again he talks about it in episodes of Ozzy and Jack's World Detour).

The bird was on purpose, he didn't mean to bite the head off the bat. During his performance, he would bite the heads off rubber bats. He was not aware that a fan had thrown a tied up real bat and threw it on the stage. Ozzy thought it was just another rubber bat. One of my favorite "South Park" moments references this momen. [Ozzy Osbourne talks about his path to fame, "I remember when I was just starting out. Chef suggested I buy a pompadour hat. I thought he said "bite the head off a bat", so I did. And the rest? Oh, it's just history."

Randy Rhodes was the guitarist. He was about 25 y/o when he died. Randy and other members of Ozzy's band were riding in the tour bus and Randy and other band members were in a small plane. They decided to barnstorm the bus as a prank and the pilot lost control and crashed the small plane killing everyone on board including Randy.
