This was around the time when Tipper Gore and the PMRC were trying to censor music. Dee Snider (the lead singer) destroyed her when he spoke to Congress. You should DEFINITELY react to him speaking at the Congressional hearings, he's brilliant and well-spoken

Indeed, Dee Snider & Frank Zappa took on the Senate, in committee, & basically destroyed them, because they had erudite arguments. Without their efforts most of the music you enjoy, and make would have been lobotomized & made anodyne decades ago. These events took place fairly early on the movement of the extreme right wing Christians into politics. I'll leave you to join the dots. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWG5qqVnid6fiqc

Regardless what anybody thinks of them, if it wasn't for their lead singer completely outclassing congress and preventing Tipper Gore from achieving her agenda of controlling music, the last 30 years of music may have been very controlled. Only thing that came out of that circus was the Parental Advosory stickers on albums.

I wasn’t a big fan of the “Explicit Lyrics” labels but it wasn’t a big deal to me considering the alternative, CENSORSHIP. I personally would like a similar label put on all music that used Pitch Correction, Auto Tune, and other A.I. technology in its production. Our government is now trying to censor internet speech. They are calling posts that are FACTS, that they don’t like, Russian Disinformation, and are wanting to get them removed like they did before the 2020 election. 🙄😂 Our government shutdown TRUE information that was bad for Biden. Mark Zuckerberg is in CYA mode now because he was an accomplice to tyranny and he is afraid Trump will get reelected. He should lose Facebook to forfeiture as he used the platform to interfere, manipulate, and censor the 2020 election. He took down TRUE FACTUAL NEWS ARTICLES, AND SHUTDOWN THE ACCOUNTS OF THOSE POSTING TRUTH AND FACTS JUST DAYS AND WEEKS BEFORE THE 2020 ELECTION.

I tell you what it made me bawl like a baby what I heard his song. He just did a great job for raising money for all cancer research. God Bless and keep him safe. Some people think that rockers have no heart but we know different. 💋💝💓💓💞💞❣️🔥🔥🔥🔥💯 If for some reason you have never heard it P. Please review that song. Maybe if you do some of the other people that watch you will go ahead and donate money for the same cause. It's bad enough when an adult has cancer but when you see even a baby born with it, or catching it even when their not but a month old or older. You would have to be a cold-hearted " with no soul at all SOB for it not to tear your heart up.😢😢😢💔💔💔 If the song for this is still out there Please , Please, Please do a reaction to it. BP, you might want to check out the Congressional hearings when Dee Snyder (the lead singer) took a bunch of senators to school. Their wives (The PMRC) had them put forth legislation to "ban" certain music artists over "vulgar and violent lyrics". They came with a list called "The Filthy Fifteen". During the hearing, John Denver, Frank Zappa and Dee Snyder all testified against the legislation. Dee Snyder was the shocker, though. His testimony enraged Al Gore and his wife Tipper.

This was about when a lot of the LA hair metal bands were wearing a lot of girlish makeup, but TS was significantly older than most of them, so they didn't try to look pretty (like Poison), they went for looking crazy.

When my daughter used to get angry, she'd go up to her room and blast this song. And I'd be downstairs thinking, "turn it up!" The costuming for Twisted Sister takes the aesthetic of Glam Rock and blends it with Metal. Androgyny goes back in Rock and Roll to Little Richard. Before Richard, Ma Raney and Bessy Smith were challenging the expectations of womanhood. Then the Beatles started growing their hair. David Bowie presented himself as androgynous and helped launch the Glam Rock genre along with Elton John. In Punk, The New York Dolls strutted around NYC all dolled up and turning heads. It's pretty much become a staple.

Dee Snider (vocals) of Twisted Sister loved the comedy movie 'Animal House' from 1978 ... especially the character 'Douglas Neidermeyer' played by actor Mark Metcalf... In 1984, Snider thought they could use a character like 'Neidermeyer' in a comedic music video for the single "We're not gonna take it" ... and then realized, "Why don't we just get the actor who player Neidermeyer? It's not like he's out there curing cancer..." 😂 So, Mark Metcalf was hired and the music video was a huge hit on MTV in 1984... Snider said that the 'dad' in the music video was based on his own father - he was always hard on him and his siblings... The scene where the dad is yelling and trashing the room happened to Dee Snider for real... In any case, Mark Metcalf returned for the music video for "I wanna rock" ... where he played the teacher. Twisted Sister's 3rd album 'Stay Hungry' would sell 4x platinum and made the band a concert sensation... but some folks were not laughing. While on tour in 1984 w/ Twisted Sister in Texas, Dee Snider was arrested for cursing onstage... a parent found his language 'obscene' and pressed charges (Snider said that he had cursed countless times in the band's club shows in NY for years... he never expected this in Texas) and Twisted Sister became a target of conservative and religious groups. The PMRC demanded hearings in Congress in 1985 to regulate music they deemed "obscene"... Prince, Judas Priest and Twisted Sister all made the "filthy fifteen" list... Tipper Gore claimed that Twisted Sister's song 'Under the blade' was about 'sadomasochism'... (Dee Snider retorted that it was about a band member's throat operation) In 1985, Dee Snider appeared in Congress to testify... he revealed that he was practicing Christian, happily married and never did drugs or alcohol... When they accused him of 'promoting violence' w/ the music video for "We're not gonna take it"... Snider told them that the video concept came from a 'Roadrunner/ Wile E. Coyote' cartoon episode. In the end, the music industry caved in to demands and put the 'Parental advisory' sticker on albums that had 'coarse language'. Unfortunately, fans were disappointed that Dee Snider was not the big, bad character that he portrayed himself as in Twisted Sister... and the band's popularity fell dramatically by 1985... The band released their 4th album 'Come out and play' and it sold poorly... In 1987, they released the album 'Love is for suckers'... and after it failed, Dee Snider quit Twisted Sister, thus ending the band. Years later, Dee Snider became a popular radio DJ and championed 80's rock in an era when it was not popular. In 2001, Twisted Sister reunited to play the Concert for New York City after the 9/11 attacks... Twisted Sister would tour playing select shows across the world annually but wouldn't release any new music. In 2015, Twisted Sister drummer A.J. Pero passed away from a heart attack 😪 As a result, Twisted Sister (Dee Snider, bassist Mark 'Animal' Mendoza, guitarists Jay Jay French and Eddie Ojeda) announced a final tour that ended in 2016 and capped their career. In the 70's, guitarist Jay Jay French formed Twisted Sister in NYC in 1972 and they became popular in the local rock scene dressing in drag and playing rock n' roll (Hence, the name Twisted Sister) ... Dee Snider (lead vocals) joined in 1976 and he was brash and outspoken and audiences loved him. Snider may have dressed in drag onstage but he was ready to throw down against anybody who crossed him on or offstage... By the early 80's, Twisted Sister had no record out but drew so many fans to their shows across New York that they made a living on their merch and ticket sales alone... A UK label offered to bring them to England, where Snider's stage presence and outspoken character won Twisted Sister an audience in the UK. The band released their first album 'Under the Blade' in 1982... Atlantic Records in Europe signed them and released 2nd album "You can't stop rock n' roll" in 1983. It was MTV that broke Twisted Sister to commercial success in N. America w/ their 3rd album 'Stay Hungry'.

This came out my eighth grade year. Our class took this as our theme song and wreaked havoc from that point forward. On the other channel, consider an episode about the PMRC when Tipper Gore and others went before congress to try to do something about our “vile” music. This eventually ended with that “explicit lyrics” label that everyone strove to get. The congressional testimony by Dee Snider and others is EPIC and shaped the music industry from that point forward.

This was the first rock concert I ever went to. Concert was festival seating. I was in the front right below where Dee Snider was standing. Had to hold on to a chain link fence below the stage to stay upright because of the crowd. I remember some guy used me as a ladder to get onstage. The band member with the sunglasses 😎 intercepted him, spun him around and flung him back into the crowd. One of the best concerts I ever went to. Alot of rock bands in the eighties did makeup. Twisted Sister just didn't pretend they were a pretty boy hair band. Absolutely loved their energy.🤟🔥🎸

At the end of the songs, it has the advertisements of other groups and stuff like that. If you’re looking in the middle row third from the left, you’ll see a guy and it says rock ‘n’ roll versus Congress. That is Dee Snider, the singer for Twisted Sister testifying before Congress about the lyrics and rock ‘n’ roll music and how the lyrics were influencing kids to commit suicide back in the 80s. It’s very interesting to listen to if you have time. Judas Priest and Ozzy were also mentioned because of the lyrics in their songs. Dave Mustain also testified in front of Congress

From Google - The American heavy metal band Twisted Sister got its name from Michael "Valentine" O'Neill, the band's original lead singer. O'Neill came up with the name while calling Jay Jay French from a bar, but he didn't remember doing so the next day. French loved the name and the band adopted it in February 1973

This came out in 1984, we were in grade 9, 14yrs old, and our teachers knew every single word to the song. Not because they necessarily liked it, but because us little gits strolled around the school for 2 months straight, singing this at the top of lungs between classes. lol

Believe it or not the band was formed in 1972 in New Jersey. It took them years to gain success and they did it the old fashioned way: toured small clubs until you drop, get up and start all over. They did things their way and refused for a long time to make music to please radio friendly audiences. They paid the price but in the end they got the recognition they deserve. Kiss used to boast that they were the hardest working band in Rock but a case could be made for Twisted Sister as well. They had so much adversity and they never gave up.

They had 1 huge album “Stay Hungry”. Every song is great. They were a local Long Island and NYC band for years playing bars and clubs. They started as a cover band and little by little introduced their own songs during sets. Eventually they got signed and this massive album came out. They still play to this day, back to clubs mostly but with a very loyal fan base here. The name and the make up and tattered cloths come from what “my twisted punk rock sister looks and dresses like”. Gotta understand the late 70’s punk scene to get it.

My dad expected me to work hard and do what’s expected of me, but he also wanted me to find my own path. I think it’s a good thing to enforce rules and good routines, but I also think kids should have freedom to express themselves. When I wanted to play the violin my dad made a deal with me. If I can stick with the instrument and make a noticeable improvement in a year he would buy me my own violin. Same when I started playing the guitar, drawing, and even when I was studying game design.
