Per Wikipedia ",...they had 16 top 40 hits. They were "Listen to the Music", "Jesus is Just Alright", "Long Train Runnin'", "China Grove", "Black Water" (#1 in 1974), "Takin' It to the Streets", "What A Fool Believes" (#1 in 1979), and "The Doctor", all of which receive rotation on classic hits radio stations. " I love all those songs. Nearly wore out the vinyls! They were mostly considered Rock and roll, but slipped across so many genres. Great reaction FUQ Guys! LOL ❤

There's no mystery to the name. It's exactly as it sounds. They're "brothers" who toke. China Grove is a good one to review. As far as harmonica solos you've got to listen to Train Train from Blackfoot.

The story goes that when this band started they were looking for a name. Someone joked that they should call themselves the "Doobie Brothers" for obvious reasons. It works. They had a friend who was an accountant and they asked him to be their manager. He set them up on a budget plan, then invested wisely with their money, and they are very well off. I would love to hear you react to "Black Water" next.

Doobie's black sound came from the bassist, Soul brother Tiram Porter. They also used 2 drummers for extra rhythmic punch, but the 2nd one was also a mean conga player/percussionist. And back then, yep- Us colored folk thought singer Tom Johnston was black, too. Gooooood pick, fellas!

Long Train Runnin' is a euphemism for the journey of life... When they sung, "Ya know I saw Miss Lucy, down along the tracks... She lost her home and her family and she won't be coming back..". That's cutting the journey short.. a suicide.. Anyway, brilliant song by an iconic group... ✌️😎
@terri24947 ай бұрын
This was actually the first time that meaning occurred to me, when I was listening just now. I live near a train track and from what I hear suicide by train is tragically common these days. And yes, brilliant song.

This is from the time before they brought on Michael McDonald and completely changed their sound. They had an awesome and completely unique sound until McDonald joined - then, in my mind, they became an 80's pop rock band and lost their individuality and signature sounds.

I loved the Doobies no matter who sang lead. They always had such depth of sound. Remember that Tom Johnston left because he nearly died from gastrointestinal issues. Nobody thought he would return. Michael McDonald joined, and the sound got more soulful and jazz-like, easier to dance to. He joined when disco was taking off and everybody started dancing...well, not everybody. Anyway, I think this style change kept them hot through the disco era. They could have faded away; instead, they made loads of money.

One comment said Randy Bachman was lead vocals, which I don't understand at all. One says Michael McDonald who wasn't in the band at this time. One says Pat Simmons, not on this particular song. Lead vocals was Tom Johnston.

You have just hit one of the greatest bands ever. The album that this song is on, "The Captain and Me" didn't leave my turntable for months. Many great deep cuts on that album. The Doobies have a split personality; Doobies without Michael McDonald and Doobies with Michael McDonald. Personally, I love the original Doobies. Michael McDonald is a wonderful singer but their sound changed to more pop driven with him. The Doobie Brothers have 2 drummers, one of which is a black dude. I saw them in 1976 in a warehouse in the middle of summer in SC. The A/C was non-existent. People were passing out left and right, mostly the drunk ones. They were so good, I bought tickets for the next night too. The band said it was the hottest place they ever played. Almost exactly 40 years later, I took my son to see them in ATL. Great every time.

That's Randy Bachman singing, he started his own band Bachman Turner Overdrive, another one of the greats. Guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter was in the Doobies, Steely Dan, and a few other bands, he also collaborated with a lot of bands and individual artists. The Doobies had a lot of members come and go through the years, but they still remained on top. Michael McDonald is another example of a member that joined, added his flavor to the stew and then left to go solo and do duets, very successful. Anyway, loved the review, love you guys, take care and stay safe ❤️
