Still a ward of the state waiting to graduate. I needed to move in with a foster family and my Dad and Mom said yes. I'm 54 now. Dad is 12 years older then me and mom is just 10 years older. People find it weird that I call them mom and dad because of the age difference. I'm still old enough to remember my birth parents. I was 7 when we were taken away from them. Birth mom used whiskey as her method of dying. Birth father was scum of the earth. My foster parents have been my mom and dad much longer than my birth parents were. It's been 35 years since I moved in with them. They have 6 children of their own but I'm always the big brother to them. They didn't have to be my mom and dad but they chose me. I gave Dad a Brad Paisley CD one year for his birthday. It had that song on it. As he listened to that song I saw tears rolling down his cheek.

Because of that line I've started saying that all of us are commiting suic... The only difference is our weapon of choice. Some people end it quick and others draw it out over a lifetime. Think about it. Everyone knows smoking is bad for you and can kill you but there are those continuing to smoke. Their death will take years but they chose that method to die. Others choose food as a weapon. There's also reckless driving, dangerous jobs, drugs, walking in unsafe areas and playing with venomous snakes. We all do something that takes the risk of death. Playing with fire and our lives. No one will live forever but most of us choose when and how we will die.

I just saw this in my feed, and I know that at four days later, it's not likely that you'll see this comment, but I want to leave it anyway in hopes that you do. I can't begin to explain how much it means to me that you reacted to this. This was almost my story in reverse. In June of 2009, I was in the navy and my fiancée and I split after ten years together, since high school. I broke things off with her because we had different life goals - I wanted kids, and she wanted tubal litigation. The night we separated, she intentionally OD'd on a cocktail of OTC meds - she had never used in her life. Her last journal entry had a photo of me and the words "Aurelia cannot live without her other half." I quickly deteriorated over the next few months. In October of 2009, I put a shotgun in my mouth and had my thumb on the trigger. The only thing I could think about was how I felt when her sister called me to tell me they found her face down in her bed. I didn't know what I could do, but I knew I couldn't let all of our friends and family get that phone call again. So I put the gun away, drove to base, and asked to be put on suicide watch. I lost my career in the navy, but I got the help I needed. The first time I heard this song was in February of 2018. I was driving alone through Death Valley on a photography trek and it came up on my streaming app. In the first verse, where Paisley sings "He put the bottle to his head and pulled the trigger," I had to pull off the side of the road to process what I was feeling and finish the song. When Krauss sings "the rumors flew, but no one knew how much she blamed herself," I lost it. I sat there all alone, in the middle of the desert, bawling my eyes out. Let me tell you, Brother, that I cannot even begin to describe how true those words ring. I didn't give her those pills, I didn't make her swallow them, and it doesn't matter how many times someone else tells you it's not your fault. When someone else takes their own life because of a choice or decision you made, you can't help but take that personally and own that, and it will devour and consume your soul if you let it. Fifteen years later now, I'm in a much better place, and I find myself wanting to share my story as much as I can in the hopes that someone else can see me as an example that things do get better and time does heal all wounds. Even still, there are times that intrusive thoughts creep in and I can't help but wonder how far back I would have to turn the clock the save her life, and I can't help but think 1999, and playing hooky on the night I would have met her the first time. But, I know that's not possible, so all I can do is hope to help others, and let people know that this song is as real as it gets. Thank you again for such an honest and emotionally vulnerable review.

He died in three years from cirrhosis of the liver. The guilt I still feel after 21 years is something I have had to learn to live with. I just want you to know you are not alone. Bradley Paisley sings songs that can be just true stories. Listen to he didn't have to be. I'm 40 years old and cry every time I hear it because it's 100% my story down to the ages of the kid

I heard this for the first time sitting with friends listening to live music. My fiance had passed less than a year before. This story didn't happen to us but he had substance issues that probably took his life. I found him. I drank myself to sleep for about 2 years after....whiskey. I cry so hard every time I hear it.

Actually Mark Wills did "Don't Laugh At Me". That's one of my favorites because I was the little girl who had braces.
@dianamccants704726 күн бұрын
@@michelleraborn6886 I love Mark Wills, Don't Laugh at Me is my favorite of his songs. I am the blind girl. The song covers a lot of disabilities, and a subject that I feel should be spotlighted. I like when artists bring their spotlight to some of the subjects that need to be talked about and prejudices put to bed. Dolly Parton "Coat of Many Colors" is another one.
@michelleraborn688626 күн бұрын
@dianamccants7047 yes. I feel like they should highlight more how some kids don't "fit in" and how it can affect them as they're growing up. I also had glasses at the same time I had braces. Back n the 80s, that was pretty much Catnip for the bullies
@dianamccants704726 күн бұрын
@@michelleraborn6886 I grew up in the 50's - 60's and wore glasses as well. I went blind later in life,, retrained and taught 800 operators to support my kids. Back then they called it teasing but it was bullying. You the subjects that are difficult to talk about and stand up against are always good things to promote.☺

The art of good country music is telling a great story that people can relate to. Not all of those stories are happy ones in our lives, but if they can make us stop, think and feel there's tremendous value in the telling. Doing it with this kind of somber beauty is tremendous.

I will never forget the moment I realized that I had forever lost the woman I loved with all my heart. Initially I was beset with shock, then my world crumbled around me and a pain that I cannot describe washed over me. The crazy thing about it is, I still love her. Many years have passed since that day and I have never and will never be the person I once was, every day of my life is underscored by those memories and the pain of losing her. Her and her kids had given me purpose in my life and I couldn't imagine my life without them, little did I know that would all be taken away. Most people can't relate to the emotions this songs evokes, thankfully those people don't know what this will do to a person and for that they should be forever grateful. After that day my life was extinguished and despite my best efforts I was never able relight a flame. My passion for everything I once cared about was gone, and I know now that it's gone forever. Some things just cannot be fixed and sadly that's just a reality, life will play out and every day is lived under a dark cloud. Never take for granted what you have and absolutely cherish every moment you have with the ones you love. You sometimes never know how things will play out and how quickly it can all be gone, so treat every day like it's your last. I live with immense regret and there is nothing I can do to change that. I loved her so much and thinking about her brings me great pain. When I go they will also find me with a note letting everyone know that despite how much she hurt me, I still love her.
