She had that tone , that richness that black women powerhouses could deliver. Madonna was everything that the 80’s was as far as pop. Pushing boundaries and rebellious. Putting women on the map with a message be unapologetically you and fudge what anyone else thinks. Cindi Lauper was the same but that seemed more authentic with her and she was just quirky. Madonna was too but she was record label moulded to an extent ie Big production behind her in videos and live show cindi was just happy and away with the fairies lol. I’m 65. I find the older I get I’m realizing that I have enjoyed the sound of smooth jazz without even knowing what it was. I still love my ‘60’s & ‘70’s Classic Rock, but even that genre includes blues, folk, bit of bluegrass, acoustic country (called California rock) and of course, the British Invasion. Love it all. Music is definitely the universal language!❤️

I started getting into Smooth/Contemporary Jazz in the late 80's with David Sanborn and Candy Dulfer then got into The Rippingtons and Slim Man. I think music like this song started me without my thinking about it. I was just getting burned out on Poison, Ratt, Bon Jovi and the like when I was in my late 20's. It was also at that time I started getting into SRV, Gary Moore, Robert Cray, and other Blues artists.

@@kallsop2 The Rippingtons were the first concert I ever hosted! I wasn’t even supposed to be involved, other than I had a music store and agreed to sell tickets. The deal was set up with a beer distributor to take the risk. The (really nice) high school auditorium where it was to be hosted said it could not be advertised or hosted by anything having anything to dowith alcohol. SoI stepped up. The band has been to my house for dinner twice and once, when they came in a day early, we chartered a big sail boat for a night cruise on Lake Michigan. Interesting guys. Did you know David Sanborn began playing sax as breathing therapy for polio when he was a kid?

Sade is one of my top five artists of all-time. I first heard "Smooth Operator" when I was 13 years old and I was mesmerized by her voice and demeanor. I have been hooked on Sade until today. The way her music is a near perfect mix of jazz, blues and rnb with a touch of bossa nova thrown in for flavor just soothes my soul in ways other artists can't. Love her. Good reaction. 100% agree with your reaction. When this album came out, I was a teen with a music library of mostly rock and metal, and posters of super models on my walls - a typical teen. Had a cassette tape of Sade right in the music mix and I loved it. She was far and away one of the most beautiful human beings I ever laid eyes on... I was smitten. She's the whole package. Amazing.

We were all over this music as kids. We appreciated it back then for sure. This is a genre called Sophisti-pop, which was very popular in the mid and late 80s. Sophisticated singing and complex arranging. Jazzy with lots of brass and orchestral sounds. Sade, Swing Out Sister, even Rick Astley had this sound. It is amazing music.

I grew up on Sade. She's one of my favorite artists of all time and she is someone I've wanted to come back on the scene forever! The crazy thing is that her music is timeless and just as awesome today as it was when it first came out. In high school I would watch her live concert over and over. I had it memorized. Her catalog is incredible and you have to deep dive. You need to watch her perform live. No Ordinary Love is a good place to start. One of my favorite songs of all time.
