Most NBA legends, that played both of them and Michael Jordan, say that Bird was the hardest to guard and scariest opponent. I’ve been a Celtic ( from the Northwest corner of CT) since 1969. After watching Larry Bird play his first year I researched his college basketball years with the Indiana State Sycamores. He was called Haley’s Comet, a phenomenon that occurs every 75 yrs. The Sycamores 78-79 season they were 33-0. They played Magic Johnson’s Michigan State Spartans for the NCAA Championship & lost to them. After watching the tournament VHS tapes of the Sweet 16 Tournament games it is obvious that Larry Legend had the leadership, passing, shooting & floor vision that he brought to the NBA. He even had a song written about him- Indiana Has A New State Bird. He’s probably laughing at all the Goat talk, that’s not what basketball was about to him, it was about being the very best he could, never quitting or disappointing the Celtic fans or organization & absolutely loved the Boston Gardens. The game 5 Celtics-Pacers game where he fractured his cheekbone & had a slight concussion ended with him being hit on the right side of his face & knocked to the floor at the end of the 3rd quarter & shoved from behind & landed on his stomach on the floor. Both times he got up & continued playing. Warrior mentality & team player, I’ll take that over Showtime razzle dazzle every day of the week. Larry Legend , the Hick from French Lick is my guy. Sadly I find the game today unwatchable.

I am from southern Indiana. Larry's high school team played against us a couple of times per season. At first glance, me an my high school friends were asking "who is this goofy looking beanpole?" He torched us every time. It did not take long for us to know he was something special, even in high school. He is very shy but he has an unmacthed feel for the game as it should be played from a team perspective. Had it not been for some very influential people (police, small college coaches, and dedicated friends) his shyness may have caused the world to never see Larry Bird's greatness. He is definitely one of the top ten players to ever play the game. I have him in my top three simply because I followed his entire career. I recommend the documentary titled "Courtship of Two Rivals". It is about him and Magic. It explains how they became great friends, despite their fierce competitiveness against each other. It is very emotional. It even shows how together, Bird and Magic saved the NBA.

As for the “where does Larry rank” question. I have him at #1. He took a 29 win team to 61 wins. This is before Parish/McHale/DJ and Ainge. Every single one of his contemporaries were terrified of him and his ability to will his team to victory. That includes Jordan, Magic, Kareem, Drexler, Dr J and Dominique to name a few. When Jordan was asked to pick his top 5, he says people stop him when he ranks Bird up there. He would respond that “Bird is the best small forward in history and it’s not close!” That included Lebron.

The key indicator is the team's record the year before and then in his rookie year, which went from 29-53 to 61-21 with the only roster difference being... the Rookie of the Year (even when his fellow rookie Magic Johnson scored 40 points filling in for Kareem Abdul Jabbar at center in the championship series and then helped his Lakers win the championship from his regular point guard position). This *NEEDS* to be pointed out. I'm a nurse that worked for an eye surgeon at one point in my career. In March of '88 against Cleveland Larry took an accidental elbow to the face. Larry's orbital socket, the bone around your eye that supports the structure of the eye and holds your eyeball in place, was fractured. These fractures can range from simple to blowout. Larry's was rather simple. However, if you experience any change in vision after such a fracture it's considered an emergent problem, could be serious enough to require surgery, but above all, absolutely demands no exertion. Larry went to the locker room to have it looked at and he was experiencing double vision. He then, of course, returned to the game. Now, one would think double vision would make things like catching a ball, passing a ball, and shooting a ball a little bit difficult. Not only did it not seem to affect his game, but he scored 36 points. For several weeks after that Larry played wearing protective goggles. I was curious why he was wearing them in some of these highlight reels and looked it up. I have to say, having cared for patients who can barely walk across a room suffering from double vision, I was blown away. Obviously, Larry's not the only player to ever play hurt, although today the game isn't nearly as physical in that sense as it was back then. But he played hurt and you couldn't even tell. He's absolutely in my top 5 GOAT.

Today I see Larry through clearer eyes. Back then I was a 76's fan and did not "appreciate " his talent in any way. Now, I am really amazed. I saw many of those plays. I didn't see it here yet, so I'm just going to add this. Larry Bird was known for his 3 point shot. The 3 point line wasn't introduced, at any level of BBall, until Larry was in the NBA. He worked to develop his 3 point ball while a professional. He's also the founding member of the 50-40-90 club (50% shooting, 40% 3pointers, 90% free throws). He averaged that over a 4 year span (but barely missed those marks in two of those 4 years), and that was also around the time he had hurt his back in '85. Was named ROY for the 1979-1980 season when he led the 20 - win Celtics to 60 wins and the playoffs, while also finishing 4th in MVP voting. Bird would then be first or second in MVP voting the next 7 or 8 years, winning MVP three years in a row. A feat no one else has matched to date (the 3 MVPs in a row). The man deserves to be in the conversation as the GOAT. EDIT: I forget who said it, but a former NBA player who played against Jordan and Bird once said he'd rather defend Jordan, than defend Larry Bird because, "Jordan makes you look slow. Bird makes you look stupid."

Larry Bird was first or second in MVP voting eight straight consecutive years, winning it three times. He was one of the two or three best ever. The only reason he did pile up career records is that he didn't start until he was 23, then he had debilitating back, knee, and Achilles tendon injuries. Even after all the surgeries, he played a five years beyond the injuries and while he lost something along the way, he was still the most feared player in the league even as his body continued breaking down. Only person ever to win MVP, coach of the year and GM of the year. As for the NBA, it's not soft today, but it is by standards from Bird's day. Remember in the highlights the clothes-line of Curt Rambis? That was just a foul. Today you'd get suspended. Robert Parrish, the center for the Celtics, once clocked the Piston's Bill Lambier and knocked him out -- just a foul. Over the years Bird mixed it up with Lambier, Dr. J., Kareem, anyone who tried to rough him up, he'd go right at them. Jordan was a superior athlete and a great scorer, but it took him several years to become a true force and all-around basketball great. Bird was from Day. 1

This was my era, and I grew up with him on my team. Bird was great for his first 8/9 yrs, but injuries cut his career short. Statistically, his totals aren’t super high, but his averages are unreal. He was a problem for anyone playing against him.

Not only could he shoot the ball and pass , he gave you 10 boards a night a career 24-10-6 guy . Every game he did something that just spun your head. The one I remember was when he beat Olajuwon in a jump ball in the 6th game of The NBA finals . You may claim others as better . There is no one who was a better overall player . He did everything, the thing I remember the most he was a savant at getting loose balls . Something that’s not in a stat book .

Larry Had & Still Holds The Best Basketball IQ/Clutch & Was The Best Team Leader. He Was Never About Padding His Own Stats He was Always About The Team & Winning. His Stats Would Have Been Crazy If He Just Played For Himself. So Many Times He Could Have Taken The Shots Himself BUT He Decided His Teammates Needed To Be Stars To So He Would Pass It To Them A Lot. The Year Before Larry Came On To The Celtics They Had Only Won 29 Games. The 1st Year Larry Came They Won 62 Games & Larry was The Only New Player That Joined That Year. Larry's 2nd Year The Celtics Won The Title/Ring. Also Larry Played Against The Best Back Then, Every Team Was Stacked With Star Players. Just Look At Who He Had To Play Against In The 80's. Also Larry Was The Last Player To Have Won 3-MVP's In A Row, 1984,1985 & 1986. The More You See Of These Video's About Larry, You'll Know Where Larry Should Be Ranked Then. to emphasize, he could have had a quadruple double (think there's only 4 players in NBA history with a Quad double), only needed 1 steal for it. but took himself out of the game in the 3rd. a Boston reporter realized that, and got his attention telling him to go back so he could get that. I'm not a basketball viewer; however, I did grow up on football. What you asked about athletes of the past is totally valid. I grew up during the dynasty, 'Iron Curtain' era of the Steelers...not only were players battling other tough as nails players back then, but they were out there battling the elements...playing in rain, mud, snow...you name it...and then having to face down some of the toughest guys on the field. It was a whole different time in sports.

ranked all time depends on who you ask , younger people sleep on him dont even have him in the top 10 and scoff when you do. most people who are very involved in the game and know the games history have him in the 4-6 spot , for me i have him at #1 for small forwards and #4 overall. Larry had two and only two negatives to his game both of witch was out of his control #1 he was injury prone but he sure played better than anyone who was as injured as he was, #2 he was not super athletic he offset that by learning and developing the skills he had better than just about anyone else who played the game. when i say injured i mean he played most of his career injured, broke his index finger on his shooting hand before he entered the NBA claimed his shooting was never quite the same. broke his back in 85 building a driveway for his mom still won MVP that year and the following year as well as a championship the following year. double surgery on both feet in 88. the fall he took in the video is when he broke his cheek, he finished playing that game with double vision.

here is a stat. Bird is the ONLY PERSON IN HISTORY to average 24 points, 10 rebounds (in the rough 80s) and 6 assists per game for his CAREER.. that ALONE makes him UNIQUE and well statistically speaking the most ALL AROUND PLAYER EVER.... but thats NOT ALL.. Bird is one of THREE ppl in HISTORY to have MULTIPLE 50/40/90 seasons (KD and Steph being the other two but they dont have the overall numbers bird had).. and FURTHERMORE, He LED THE LEAGUE in DWS (Defensive Win-shares) FOUR TIMES (ONLY 4 OTHER PLAYERS have done atleast that, Tim Duncan and Olajuwan are two of those players) he literally DID IT ALL.

Btw, Larry is more than his stats. He was a “pass first” kind of player so while he could have led in scoring, he chose to share with the TEAM. At the end of the day, Larry is up there with Magic leading the WINS percentage column. Magic has an extra 10 games bcuz he came out of retirement briefly.
