It's pronounced "Span-dow", so you were correct with the second attempt. The band took its name from Spandau Prison in Germany, where many executions by hanging were carried out before and during World War II. While dangling at the end of the rope, many victims would twitch and jump, which came to be called the "Spandau Ballet".

Gary Kemp, the guitarist, pianist, and main songwriter, was in love with Claire Grogan the lead singer of Altered Images. He wrote this for her. Unfortunately it was unrequited. Lead singer is Tony Hadley and Gary’s brother Martin on bass. Try “Gold” next. One thing to keep in mind that a lot of 80s UK groups were influenced by Motown. “Listening to Marvin, all night long” Another great group is ABC - The Look of Love, Poison Arrow, When Smokey Sings.
