Hi BP, an orchestra is a group of musicians, usually around 70 - 80 people. They are composed of strings (violins, violas, cellos and double basses), woodwinds (clarinets, oboes, saxophones etc) brass (trumpets, trombones, flutes) and percussion (timpani, xylophones, marimbas etc, but may also include drums). Symphonies are pieces of music which are usually at least 4 distinct parts or movements. A Symphony might include a choir or vocal soloist. You get different names for Orchestras, eg Symphony or Philharmonic (roughly the same thing). You also get a chamber orchestra which is much smaller. All orchestras are led by the Conductor who keeps the tempo and ensures all the musicians are playing in time and at the right place. The Composer is the person who wrote the symphony. Orchestras also play pieces which are not symphonies, in fact there is a symphony orchestra in NZ which plays a pretty great version of Darude’s Samdstorm!
@eryksun9 ай бұрын
Since BP was curious about what it's called when an orchestra is accompanied by vocalists (e.g. a choir), it's worth noting that a symphony that's composed for an orchestra and a choir, and possibly solo vocalists, is simply called a "choral symphony". The first choral symphony was Beethoven's 9th Symphony, completed in 1824. It incorporates a choir and soloists singing "Ode to Joy" in the final movement. It's set to a melody that's commonly called the "Hymn to Joy", which has been the Anthem of Europe since 1985.

Who, for example? It's a great score, and I love it and this performance. Such judgements are very much subjective. I'd rather vote for Hermann's score for Citizen Kane, Korngold's for Robin Hood, Rosza's for Ben-hur, or even Steiner's for the original King Kong, which really challenged what a score could do. Doesn't minimize my admiration for Morricone's work.
@galadballcrusher81829 ай бұрын
I would also vote for Conan score by Basil Poledouris. Especially cause like this score tells parts of the story filling gaps with leitmotifs it introduces and intertwines with scene music.
@alanfoster65899 ай бұрын
Poledouris' score reminds me of what the celebrated wit and pianist Oscar Levant said of Steiner's "King Kong" score when the film first came out. "It's a concert of Steiner's music with visual accompaniment". I feel the same about the score for "Conan".@@galadballcrusher8182

Ennio Morricone is a master composer. I used to listen to this soundtrack on repeat when I was a child. John Williams is another master composer who has composed many soundtracks (eg Star Wars). This kind of music is what made me a band kid. I had some amazing life experiences playing the French horn in a concert/marching band. I marched in some big parades (Calgary Stampede, Disneyworld) and played some memorable concerts and won a solo award at a music festival. This soundtrack never fails to give me goosebumps. Morricone was a true composer. A master trumpet player. He studied with great modern composers. Then, he decided to "make something for a film". He took inspiration from a lot of different things, put them together in a single score... many times, for a lot of movies. He was a genius of course but he allways remained himself. And that's a rare trait. It's the third movie in the "dollar trilogy". These films made Clint Eastwood Clint Eastwood, I think. P.S: a mezzo soprano has a deep, sweet voice for sure! I love it.

Ennio Morricone died in 2020. Amazing composer. His score to The Mission is one of my faves. A composer writes a symphony. The orchestra is the performers. The person leading the orchestra is the conductor (not the composer). Sometimes composers will conduct, e.g. John Williams is a composer but he sometimes he conducts orchestras performing the Star Wars soundtrack. The instrument at the opening was a recorder, not a flute.

Film scores are the modern follow-up of classical music (you know like Verdi, Beethoven, Mozart, etc). There are even some film score writer who do concerts with symphony orchestras like Hans Zimmer or Howard Shore and others. One of the most underrated film scores in my opinion is from Conan the Barbarian - the first huge movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. But there is just a ton of great film scores. Maybe you try some more 🙂 Most people dont notice how important the music score is for a movie. Which makes movies like "no country for old men" so special (cause no score - thank you Coen Brothers for your brilliancy)

Generally, the difference between an orchestra and a band is an orchestra has strings. You know, violins. A symphony is generally considered a piece of classical music, or is composed in sections or movements like classical music was. “The good, the bad, and the ugly’ was originally the theme to the 1960s movie by the same name. The original theme to the movie was released as a single and became a top 10 hit by its original artist, Hugo Montenegro, and his Orchestra. If memory serves, it was a hit in 1968.

The lady who sang "wah wah", her name is tuva semmingson, a classically trained singer in her own right, she sings everything from opera to standards to pop. A diva of the 1st class. If you look closely, for this concert she was wearing little six shooter earrings. PERFECT!!! I watched an interview with the two vocalists.Tuva Semmingsen AKA the Wa Wa Lady, as she has been called by the tube, actually likes being called the Wa Wa Lady. She couldn't believe how this performance took off on the tube. Christine Nonbo Andersen is the solo vocalist in the audience. This was her first performance with the Danish National Orchestra. Both ladies nailed their performances and added a stunning element to this Ennio Morricone masterpiece. Ennio Morricone was a composer of film soundtracks, where he used instruments and objects that are not normally used in an orchestral ensemble. Electric guitars, basses, ocarinas, bongos ... but also whips, gunshots, gusts of wind. Entering Morricone's work is a complete immersion. A moving tribute for fidelity down to the smallest details is what the Spaghetti Werstern Orchestra did to him.
