Grew up on this blue eyed soul brother. I’m 73 years old , black and we didn’t care about color. All we knew was this guy can sing, and we embraced his soulful talent…simply amazing to still hear his voice that gives me chills❤

Good point to make! Music was a powerful influence to help break down the color barriers you and I both knew as children. Talent doesn't care about skin color, and slowly but surely that had an impact on the world as music gave black performers a leading role in creating new musical genres, and both black and white audiences learned to appreciate the musicians who made great music regardless of the color of their skin. We are far from perfect today, but music has certainly helped contribute to moving the world in the right direction.

I am a Boomer . I am so glad I grew up to listen to the best songs of rock and pop in history. Nobody outdoes Bobby in this performance. He set The bar so high. I have never heard anyone equal it in any song. There are a lot that came close to the bar but None is better than Bobby. He earned the gold medal of all time for male singers.

Yep it was 100% live, he also had a cold and was nervous because his parents were in the audience and it was the first time he had performed in front of them. He just opened his mouth and sang, incredible talent. All our boys in Vietnam were crying over this, wait for me wait for me.

@@DianeAccettullo-yr1ht not a job or a vocation; just experience garnered in the four years he spent in the Naval reserves after high school, which, you are correct, there is almost no info on. Remember the draft was in play and men had to serve in some capacity unless granted an exemption. There is a picture or two out there of Bobby with his reserve unit. There is also a picture of him in the cockpit of a jet on the set of “Top Gun” and in some article a blurb of info saying Naval consultants on the film were surprised to learn of his experience.

Most importantly, he didn't have a terrible addiction, unless you count cigarettes. Yes, a trace amount of cocaine turned up in the autopsy, but he died in his sleep from a run of the mill heart attack. Could make a list of what could cause that erroneous tox result. He wasn't feeling well so he had dinner in his room and fell asleep. Those close to him, family and friends, never saw him using or under the influence. The autopsy also found he had blockages in his arteries up to 95%...bypass surgery was needed. According to one of his sons, he had a doctor's appointment scheduled for after that tour. Too bad it wasn't before the tour. Wanted to add: no drugs or drug paraphernalia was found in his room.

I’m from the 60’s. Graduated from high school in ‘69. Those types of songs were written and sung during the Vietnam War. If you listen again it states “wait for me”. That’s what we did and the young men right out of high school became soldiers and were sent on to train for a war we should not have been in. It was a very difficult and frightening time. My fiancé was in Vietnam when he was 19 years old. We did marry but what that particular war did to young men who only had less than 4-5 months training in Basic and AIT training couldn’t begin to prepare them for what they went through.

Lots of practice, lots of rehearsal, doing it over and over, testing and comparing versions and pacing. He had an exceptional voice, and plenty of talent, but it was huge amounts of hard work that really put them on the map.

In 1965, we had 3 TV channels, and variety shows like this were the bomb. Probably 40% of the national audience was watching this, his parents were in the audience, and they had a live orchestra reading sheet music in the background. Yes, the intro was staged, but the performances were live, live live, warts and all.

As a few others have said, the music was played live and NOT a recording. You have to give props to studio orchestra for nailing it perfectly.

It was a great time to grow up. I was borned 01/07/56!! The next 25 years consisted of producing; writing, performing, recording, the greatest music ever. Props to Bethoven, Mozart, Brahms, etc, however, that was maybe 200yrs of music. This was 25 ish years, but 1955-1980 was the sweet spot!!

Almost 79 yrs old and still love to hear the "past" entertainers who had voices that needed no enhancements. My generation just expected it and we had great performers - all colors and ethnicities. We just loved their talent and music. I enjoy seeing the expressions and reactions of this young generation when they hear real talent. And yes, we have some today, but so much technology and enhancements go into their music we don't get to hear the real voice many times.
