We call him “The Hag”. Legend, OG, A Master Songwriter, Vocalist and Guitarist. The Hag was an Artist for the common man, the blue collar workers. He sang about what he wanted/was important and if the fay cats didn’t like it, he didn’t give a sh!t. Merle Haggard is a very deep rabbit hole you must discover. And watching him perform live is an experience.

Merle, even though he served time when he was younger, is probably one of the greatest Patriots the US has ever had. He also was blind to differences in Race, Color, or Creed. He shared a lot of the views that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had. Rest in Peace, Mr. Haggard.

My brother, you need to go down the Merle Haggard rabbit hole. He's right up there with Johnny Cash! My favorite Merle Haggard tune is "I take a lot of pride in what I am". His more popular songs "branded man", "sing me back home", "silver wings" are incredible too. FYI: Merle Haggard was a prisoner in San Quentin when Johnny Cash played there, watching Johnny Cash perform changed Merle Haggard's life.

All we had to do growing in a small southern town was ride the dirt roads listening to our favorite music wide open. I remember doing it with Mama and Daddy when I was a child. When I was a teenager, we had our deadend dirt roads where we did our wilder partying. Loud music was always a part of this. I'm loving this musical journey with you, even subscribed to your channel. The Hagg died in 2016. This song was originally released in 1982. He spent 2.5 years in San Quentin for burglary & attempted escape. He was anything but 'clean cut'. LOL He did a song called 'Okie from Muskogee'. (Muskogee, Oklahoma) & its kind of sung in jest about hippies & drugs etc. He has a fun song with Willie Nelson called 'It's all going to pot'. Check the old boys out.

Great reaction! Merle came to national attention with the ant-hippie pro-Vietnam War anthem "Okie from Muskogee" in 1968. Over the years he realized that we had been lied to, and he moved more and more into the counter culture. The next Outlaw you need to discover may be the best of them all Waylon Jennings. He also has dozens of great songs. "Are you sure Hank done it this way?" might be a good place to start.

Grew up listening to the Hag. Probably my favorite artist of all time. Definitely top 3. Back in the 70's it seems like my mom never took her Merle Haggard 8-track tape out of the tape deck in the car. I had the whole thing memorized before I was in kindergarten. You need to check out a song called "Mama tried." Or "That's the way love goes." Both are excellent! 👍

I like the way you are open minded, and willing to move forward as we all should. So many of these performers that you saw that came out of the era we’re brave enough to stand for the truth. Many were inspired by Woody Guthrie, who wrote America the beautiful, and the song were taught in school, is only part of this song there was verses that have been deleted from most media if you will. If you look it up and listen to the rest of it there’s been wise people that have been there all along through our strife in a country and humanity.

Merle Haggard was doing time at San Quentin when he heard Johnny Cash live. He started to turn to music. He was doing hard time but started to write and play great music. Hes part of the " Outlaw Country" trend. He was offically pardoned by Ronald Reagan in 1972. One of Willie Nelsons best friends

Thanks for being open about where you are coming from. Your openness and heart gives me hope there is still a chance that we might come together. This song came out in 1982. I believe the imagery in the video were pulled from Norman Rockwell. At his time he was considered an artist reflecting American culture. I'm going to mention some songs by the Hag, that I have not seen mentioned. "Rainbow Stew" because I think it pairs well with this song. Two of my favorite ballads by him "Leonard" and "Daddy Frank". Finally I'll suggest "Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink" I believe you'll like the style of the song. As always thanks for a great and thoughtful reaction.

*salute to you and your father. I was raised in a family where members of my family fought in every war this country has had including the French Indian & British war. That tradition ended with me. I should have been in Desert Storm but 3 days before I was heading out I was in a hit and run and it took me a year to learn to walk again... Navy said no thanks. I too have lost friends over our freedoms. I do tend to get a bit triggered especially if I see someone burning our flag. However, all that junk aside I enjoyed this reaction. Merle kind of straddled the fence to outlaw country. He has a huge catalog of music I think I have over 20 albums of his and I know I don't have all of his work. Some of his music will get you dancing, some will make you sit and think. Love your reactions keep up the good work.

I’m a 72 year old Hispanic woman born and raised in NM. Those sweet images are Norman Rockwell paintings. His paintings would appear in the weekly Saturday Evening Post. I think often of the neighborhood where I grew up. The kids were of all racial backgrounds, Native American, Black, Hispanic, Italian, Japanese, White. The kids all played on my block together. We all went to the same elementary school, with the exception of a few who went to Catholic School. We were all friends and playmates. I wished I had a Norman Rockwell painting of my neighborhood. We talk too much about division and race. When we do that we don’t give enough credit to people like Charley Pride, Sammy Davis Jr. , Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, and everyday people like my Uncle who organized a Boys Club in our neighborhood and included every boy who wanted to join. It’s like you have said Black Pegasus, we need more love! Amen.

My dad was a big Haggard fan and finally got a chance to see him in concert. Merle showed up so drunk that he couldn't sing! That's country music, but at least we got to see Johhny Cash & June Carter in their prime. They blew us away, and no live performance can ever match it.

Hag is speaking from the world he knew, from the world he was raised in and what he's used to. He's telling the truth as he knew it. Artist can only speak of a place from where they know. Thats why not everyone can understand certain paintings, or poems etc. A single artist isn't supposed to to speak to everyone. NOT EVERYONE IS THE SAME! Thats what makes this country so great...everyone's diversity! And NOT make those differences anyone's business except the individual.

Merle was definitely part of the "outlaw country" movement. He was literally an outlaw as a youth and was sentenced to life in prison at 21. He cleaned up his act as an inmate after seeing Johnny Cash live in prison and dedicated himself to becoming a singer. He eventually made it out on parole and became famous. Early in his career, he did sing a lot about traditional values and some pretty conservative stuff. "Okie from Muskogee" was his first big hit and is about being proud to be a square. But he always said that there was supposed to be a level of irony about it; he didn't exactly adhere to those values in his life. He has a lot of other songs that are about being an outlaw or take a rebellious or controversial stand on social issues.

I grew up with my Dad singin Haggard tunes around the house all the time, he sounded just like him. Merle Haggard wrote over 70 #1 hits for himself and other artists, over 100 Top 10 hits...he could play the piano, fiddle, guitar, and saxophones, in fact he mastered them all...He died in April 2016, and when I told my Dad it was the second time I ever saw him tear up. Mind you, he was a USArmy Vietnam vet, he deployed twice where he went thru hell, and he was a bare knuckle fighter when he returned stateside, this man did never got emotional except for when his Dad died in 2002, and when Merle Haggard died...that's how important Merle is to many of us...I'm just sayin...🤘🏻🇺🇸
