It was popularized by Doom, but it didn't originate from it. Any computer program that attempts to display "nothing" as a pixel will instead display whatever color pixel is behind it. This is why the ball path is copied - it keeps drawing the ball, because instead of drawing black, it's trying to draw "nothing". This is a failsafe so that it'll be able to draw something and won't break. It happened in Doom when areas were marked as not within the bounds of the map due to faulty programming in user levels, and thus it needed to display something in an area that didn't even technically exist.

Consider if you had a painter at a canvas: This painter is the screen rendering program. The painter gets data from the objects in the program about what to paint, and he keeps painting over the same canvas for each frame. When a pixel is "nothing", then the painter just doesn't paint at that location, and you can see the previous frame in the empty space. That's why you get that trippy "layered" effect when you go out of bounds in a video game: the game is rapidly "painting over" each frame, using only what is visible, so you get dozens of copies of the gun you're holding or what-have-you since nothing new is being "painted" over the space where the gun had been.
