You are watching the greatest guitar player in American history. There have been more technical, faster and loud players, but Jerry cared about every note and played with feeling. This guy is a legend.

Listen to the entire song, or most particularly at : 4:14 ... refrain ..., then ... 4:48 Jerry angle's / refrain's the group, the tiger in a trance ... ! 4:53 ... one of the most utter sweetest guitar lines I have ever heard ... IMO ... 5:02 that amazed Jerry look, he's surprised, blissed, lifted, and so are we ... 6:41 Jerry looks left : "shhhhhh" (read "quiet Phil & Keith"). PS : oh and Bob Weir (rhythm guitar) & Phil Lesh (bass) are also exemplary here too !

By far, this is my favorite Dead rendition of this Dylan song. As they play, you get a sense that they know they are creating something very special, a performance, a memory for all time. Jerry sings it in that soft, expressive manner - what this song deserves. Bobby is simply amazing also. Billy Strings is someone else who does justice to this song.

Thanks for posting this. This reminds me of the first time I heard them do this song - in Ann Arbor, 1979, except in that concert it was in an acoustic set. I knew the song from folk music, and was just blown completely away. They also did Samson and Delilah and Ship of Fools acoustic, which also stunned me. I was mesmerized - without any supplementation. I lived a mile from Crisler Arena, walked to the show, paid $6.50.

I barely could do my own husband but we got through it after I left him for 12 years because he became a alcoholic + hit me or slap me when he was drunk ! I'm driving down San Pablo Ave. to the Rosie the Riveter National Monument thinking of the 300 hours I had on cassettes, and gonna sit along the mile long WWII Ford tank assembly plant in Richmond and do some dabs, and this sounds like the tapes I used to spin 10 90-min. Memorex at a time and send out to heads around the world in exchange for the same. My Denon dual decks never stopped spinning and my Klipsch speakers never stopped shaking. Thanks to whomever is making these. And if you can hear Bobby in the mix, it's probably a Betty Board. As a Kentucky boy who grew up in LEX and whose first job 32 years ago at 14 was running up and down the stairs of Rupp Arena yelling, "Coke! Popcorn! Peanuts!"
