@scottyunitedboy29252 жыл бұрын
@@angelaholmes8888 it was a complete trashing of her character- 10 years before, we had cheered on Pauline when she slapped Peggy after her treatment of Mark and banning him from the Vic. The tables completely reversed by this time and we were left with a Pauline who was virtually unrecognizable. The biggest mistake was probably trying to get her together with Joe despite the fact that both actors had very little chemistry together.

@jd496315 жыл бұрын
They are showing old episodes on Drama Channel in the UK and they are up to 1988. Pauline is already quite bitter, even then, after her mother Lou died. She pretty much took over the role of Lou who was always a cantankerous old matriarch.

Reportedly Wendy Richard herself was disgusted with the way the writers ruined Pauline as a character. She argued unsuccessfully that Pauline would never have remarried or behaved in this way, so Wendy decided not to renew her contract. So Pauline did not get the exit she deserved as a character, instead being turned into a bitter, lying old crone.
@shanefolan4 жыл бұрын
That wasn't the only reason. She stated that she didn't like how the show had changed from its original premise and had lost its traditional values, she also said she had tired of how the media had criticised her ageing appearance as she had being through several bouts of cancer.
@gezatherton10714 жыл бұрын
Shane Folan No wonder she left! :O
@shanefolan4 жыл бұрын
@@gezatherton1071 I think younger people don't realise is that Richards was actually seen as a pin up sex symbol in her days before EastEnders. Thus I can see why she didn't like the media criticising her appearance in her later years and why it would hurt more. It showed her too how cruel the media and society are to ageing especially on ageing women who once were attractive.
