I can dig it! Leslie Buck Jr. and Rene Salazar at the Texas Kali Mastery Camp. I was there in 2004. Had one of the best times training!

These guys are pretty fast. I noticed that in all the styles, you need good perception, reflexes, and coordination to put the enemy at a disadvantage. In the empty-hands style he used two motions, one to deflect the attack, and the other to counter; both came out smoothly and quickly. This was a good video.

It is not a dying art. It's quite obvious it will never be as popular as Judo or Karate, Muay Thai, etc. But it has its place among those that want to use weapons and it is growing steadly even here in Brazil.

I'm not getting involved with who can beat what etc. All I'll say is that this is a good DEMO of what this system has to offer. I love the flow hat kali teaches you. It's unlike anything I've come across in other arts I've studied.

Agree with you 100%! I'm also a proud practitioner. Unfortunately, I have a hard time explaining it to other people who thinks you only practice to fight with a stick. But I was there before I tried it out!

@yam831 So long as you keep yourself together...the big mistake people tend to make when they open their hands is to not keep an eye on their fingers. I can't describe how many times I've had to correct people parrying with their fingers spread wide open in class. A Jujitsu practitioner would have them snapped and locked in a second, assuming the parrier doesn't accidentally break them themselves.

True enough, but in kali we don't depend upon the common sense, intelligence or kindness of the person who was already dumb and vicious enough to attack us, instead we depend upon our own skills to protect our life from people who don't hold it to be as precious as do we. If you are in a knife fight, like it or not, it is life or death, because anyone can take your life from you with a knife.

@s3ksee, sagang labo is the version of hubad/lubad in PTK. And the reason for the footwork is that the system is based entirely on blade. The stick is just a tool to train blade tactics. Inosanto Kali trains with the stick, as a stick and a blade, and has different techniques for both. PTK's training is always based on a blade, it just differs a little based on the length of the blade or lack of a blade. Even the empty hand angles stay relatively the same.

In Kali/Escrima, the motions you learn with the stick and the knife become the motions you use empty-handed. This way you have a streamlined system that can be used with or without a weapon. You have more angles of striking than most of the more commonly-known striking arts. The footwork is also triangular and will mystify just about anyone who attempts to "box" you. Kali strives to be a more complete system that is geared for combat, though it can be modified for MMA/UFC as well. Just wait.

@kjkidd14 жыл бұрын
@kjkidd I understand what you mean by traditional martial arts using pre-arranged forms while sparring, which is common. But for example, Wing Chun, you're training constantly for hand-eye co-ordination, and predicting strikes before they actually happen, and blocking and attacking as a reflex. They don't necessarily have to be pre-arranged strikes in sparring since all you need is a "bridge" which is basically any strike from any angle. Once you reach a certain level, they do only fullcontact.

yossi. I completely agree with your statement. the cool thing about fma that its a survival art just like krav. and it is battle tested every day in the phillipines like krav is battle tested. I think it would be cool to see both styles fused together because they both focus on so many practical aspects of combat and survival.

Have fun playing the "what if" game. I will busy myself with training for situations that actually happen regularly. How many reports have you heard of someone being attacked by someone wielding two knives? I have heard of exactly 0. Its probably not bad to train for, but I am not going to focus on it.

@granknight12 жыл бұрын
but most ppl do walk around with pens, pencils, or other pointed objects right and in the streets as you say it wont be practical who knows it might just happen your fighting where sticks can be found or a pipe but still the main reason for the stick fighting is to be oriented in the used of a weapon same as judo gets you acquanted with the used of the ground bjj grappling muay thai use of elbows knee fist and kicks karate wing chung etc... ptk or any martial arts practice

Krav Maga was never intended for long-term mastery. The Israeli military developed it for the purpose of having a simple yet highly effective system of hand-to-hand combat to teach new recruits as part of standard training. It does what it is meant to do, nothing more. Thus it also experiences the limitations you and others have mentioned.
@IAmAlive9112 жыл бұрын
I actually looked that up, and it seems like you're very likely to be correct. "On the morning of 27 April 1521, Magellan sailed to Mactan with a small attack force. And further: do you think an enemy needs that big bunch of cuts and blade attacks until he will not defend hisself any more? Realistic the fight is nearly over after the attacker impacts with his weapon hand and gets his first cut in the underarm \ wrist. All the actions which are taken in place are just opportunities. in kali you try to stay in a steady flow and work in the situations BY the situations.

Shame there are rude comments on such a superb video of FMA. Great stuff I love it, thanks for posting. As a Brit. I choose Eskrima as my MA. Others may choose Judo for example, (a Japanese system). Could be argued Europe was the cradle of MA (Greece to India to China). There are British MAs but nations have no place when you are choosing an MA (it's got to be personal). I respect them all, but I choose Filipino personally. Much respect from UK to Philippines, great video.

@Soulfege09 Also, Inostanto Kali incorporates hubud/lubad techniques and dumog. PTK I believe uses something like hubud called numerada(?). PTK does put a lot of emphasis in speed and power, Inosanto's more on combination and reflexive countering. But you know, don't think of these differences as if one system is better than the other... both systems have a lot to offer and can turn anyone into a lethal weapon. I hope that helps. ^_^

@Soulfege09 Well... PTK is a system cultivated and perfected by the Tortal clan, whereas Inosanto Kali is a blend of Lacoste and Lameco eskrima among others. The footwork are completely different - same triagular pattern, but PTK uses what's called broken footwork, zoning. Chamber positions and application of strikes differ slightly. The sabre (knife) grip in PTK is different than Inosanto's. PTK is more aggressive, Inosanto Kali is more like a "chess game."

In fact, most Kali techniques focus on disabling a grapple by throwing strikes to vulnerable areas. You are also forgetting the fact the a Kali practitioner will most probably attack your throat, genitals and eyes before you can land a throw. In a street fight, there are no rules.

the Philippino arts are street lethal. its a well rounded system with strikes, submissions, and weapons. also the weapons are things you actually run into (no nun chucks or katanas). plust you can turn anything into a stick (a magazine, a pipe, a flashlight). More than worth learning.

Of course you are right. If it is possible to protect yourself without killing or even hurting your opponent, by all means you should to it. Often times, the best way to protect yourself is simply to run away, but in a case where that is not an option, unfortunately the most effective techniques with the highest chance of protecting you, are often also the most deadly.

The footage just wants to show different alternative movements. Stuff you can do if you are beeing attacked. The attacker does not use his second hand, because the attacker strikes within his defence movement. Also his attacking hand is an active block against the attackers second. The 'locking up' to just one enemy.. pff, do you see other enemys around?

uhmm oki here's a better explanation for it you see those wooden dolls wing chung practicioner use right ? the one they punch and kick its the same concept except your doing it with a partner with sticks and the movement for the stick block and parry moves are used in the open hand practice ^^ so most pkt practitioner starts using the sticks then going to the open hand hope this helps XD
