Toriyama had said many times that because it was such a long series with so many breaks he would forget a lot of what he wrote and regularly have to pull volumes off the shelf to try reread stuff. Also since he was guessing which volume he needed, if he picked the wrong one or it was taking to long to find the information, he’d just go oh well and make up something new. He said that when Super came around he was glad to have all the fan books because it made it much easier to refresh his memory and find stuff he had forgotten Knowing that it makes sense why DBZ was so all over the place with continuity while Super was like oh yeah magic and demons exist plus the Z Fighters have all these fighting techniques After learning that I could just picture Toriyama pulling some volume off the shelf going what did I say Piccolo was oh well can’t find it so I’ll just say he’s an alien now

The idea that he practically retconned Piccolo to be a species of another race changing him from being the son of a demon king lead to an expanded world of Dragon Ball. I imagine the whole Saiyan thing wound up this way for this same if not similar reason. Gotta give props for Toriyama and his just roll with it type of thinking.

ahhhhhhh it so cool so see another db fan geek out when like Goku beats King Picolo or seeing the goofy ahh way chi chi reminds goku that he proposed to her when he was 8. As much as dragon ball ballz and beyond is like the basic bish the ferrari if you will of anime it was and is still so amazing the story the character the chinese influence. It reminds me why I loved Ranma 1/2 so much too with that old school Urusai Yatsura animation style. I am soooo happy I got into anime at the end of the 80s.
