I have long followed the evolution of Skip's Pelagic concept... Vinson of Antarctica is a beautiful pinnacle of a practical sailing vessel made to work and explore.... If I ever get the chance to commission a yacht it would be a "Mini Vinson" 😍

Having sailed on Pelagic Australis with you and your team Skip ... I thought I'd seen the perfect yacht ! But you've taken it to another level with VoA ! So glad to see the gymnastics required (over a running engine) when filling the day tank are a thing of the past. The knowledge and ideas that you and Tony are able to bring to life in boats is truly astonishing. I hope to sail on VoA sometime in the future. All the best.

My friends who are off-road drivers say if you have the best off-road vehicle in the world, it means you will get farther, in more remote places on difficult terrain than anyone else. Also meaning when you finally get stuck, noone will be able to rescue you because all the others can't even come close. Whoever sails VoA to its limits needs to keep it in mind :)

The Pelagic sailing yachts are a masterpiece of intention, design, and function. The Vinson of Antarctica is the epitome of the vision. But the one thing I do not understand is why the exterior helm is not more weather protected, at least from rain, wind, and spray?
@KMYachtbuilders3 жыл бұрын
It is quiet sheltered behind the pilot house, except for the head of the helmsman sticking out to have a good view forward and not having his/her sight blocked by the pilot house.
@vermontsownboy69573 жыл бұрын
@@KMYachtbuilders Thanks for reply. I understand KM's point, and must believe that KM's design approach serves a critical purpose compared to other more enclosed helm designs that may (or may not) have quick-open windows or biminis. So, assuming one could find the $funds$ for such (and believe me when I say that I'm motivated), are the various Pelagic designs (i.e. Skip Novak's boats) copy-righted or can they be reproduced? The thinking is that if a legendary high latitude veteran has iterated the design through, design/trial/use/consideration/trial/design resulting in 77 and 82, why wouldn't any serious high-latitude sailor want exactly that?
@KMYachtbuilders3 жыл бұрын
@@vermontsownboy6957 Hi, actually the design (including the helms position) is from Tony Castro. This also answers the second question. He and Skip are the owners of the Pelagic designs. As I understand the design is only for Skip's yachts, but perhaps they are open to selling the designs to others as well.
@vermontsownboy69573 жыл бұрын
@@KMYachtbuilders Tony Castro design - thanks. From your note: a potential buyer would clearly have work to do to sort out any patent or intellectual property issues and necessary permissions or licenses required to reproduce the design. The thing is, how could one possibly improve the design concept? There may be ways, but seriously..... All this by way of saying I could not be more impressed with the design or actual production of the vessel. Spectacular piece of kit...I'm in awe! - Tim

@smartcatcollarproject56993 жыл бұрын
I suppose you can set the autopilot from inside ? And if they need to manoeuvre the crew must be on the deck anyway, as it's manual winches, etc. True that's it not one of those +20 meters sailboats full of electronics, handled by a couple of older people as you can see on the Mediterranean...
@j_rainsgoat39293 жыл бұрын
Electric winches would have been a nice addition at least a few of them. But hey If you have a crew why not go manual?
@moteroargentino7944 Жыл бұрын
It obviously can be steered from the inside too, and it's well insulated and comfortable inside. But it's built for adventurous people (climbers, film crews, research teams, etc) so it makes sense to keep things manual if you're gonna have those kind of people around. They're itching for action.
@seppokoskenranta50163 жыл бұрын
Hoisting sails seems to be hard work. I wonder what happens when it really blows
@KMYachtbuilders3 жыл бұрын
Yes, all winches are manual. When it really blow they would probably not use the mains but jibs and headsails. Or only a storm sail.
