First time Im seeing Simone today and I LOVE HER! I believe this is what Opera used to be about when people would bring their oranges and peanuts to the Theatre and were fully engaged in the whole thing. Really fun and entertaining...Sure sometimes its nice to hear all perfection, but too much perfection gets really boring. I LOVE this performance and would pay sums to see her perform!

@LalaSingsClassics Well, I never said Ms Kermes did not sing the score : she has huge pitch issues (e.g. 5:58, not to mention the properly HIDEOUS downward run at 5:40...) ! That makes a difference ! Go and listen to Dessay's performance in Glyndebourne : that is perfection !

Definitely eccentric (look at those heels! : O ) But I think her attitude might be exactly what classical voice needs--someone who can sing excellently and has mastered the technique, but who also can engage the audience and bring them into her enjoyment of the music. I love Kermes' voice, and now her mannerisms are growing on me, too.

It's a bit over the top, but this is a gala and not the opera. Lighten up people. She sold it to a foreign audience and they loved it. Check out Kristen Chenowith and the Boston Pops. Better yet, check out June Anderson with Bernstein conducting. Kermes did well considering she is not a native speaker and very few can sing it well.

Paganini was technically inventive, creating maneuvers only he could conceive (indoctrinating other violinists/composers later). However, one can NOT imagine him playing poorly or out of tune in order to be goofy, campy or "accessible". Kermes is histrionic and it's her signature. It's a pity that musical virtuosity AND emotionally charged singing are not her salient traits.

I see her completely under control... I see a very intelligent woman completely on top of it. The breathy effects are obviously in the use of her expression... you might not like them but they do not betray technical inconsistency by no means.

I disagree about the technique. she is breathing way too high and jerking her neck and it causes her to sound strained and "cheat" the coloratura. she's getting too emotionally charged. as a singer, one must sing with emotion, but never too much. there is a line after which it starts to effect technique and negatively impact the performance.

It's interesting, she doesn't stand out because of her technique,BUT she can sing and will do it right as high singer, However, she offers something new, which it's really risky, some of her work doesn't please me, although, I think it's a new point of wiew and a different type of opera singer , not a common one, to which we are used. This performance is really stylish, which is tricky because sometimes we cannot say that something is well sang or not. Mozart and bellini, for example have a similarity and if you interprete them almost the same will be okay. Here we have here a 20st century operetta different from our old composers, you could like or dislike contemporary opera, but judge it in the correct terms, many people make a mess judging wrong. Her cadenza in 5:38 is interesting

Nothing is wrong for being too emotional charged.... There's no boundary in music making... If you limit yourself at only a certain level... Then you will never have chance to be better than that... Techniques can be altered according to one's ability. Vivaldi or Bach's pieces of music (Baroque) are played and composed without high level of techniques but once Paganini entered the classical world of violin, people changed their way of thinking about violin techniques...

I love her Piangero mi Sorta, but not crazy about what she does here. Her voice sounds small and thin. Dislike her outfit/makeup too. That very flat, slicked back hair is NOT flattering.

Du grand n'importe quoi; la musique de Bernstein ne semble plus, ici, que prétexte à piaillements plus ou moins contrôlés ( souffle et soutien sont mis à rude épreuve!). Le dernier cd de la dame nous "offre" un "Casta Diva" d'un niveau musical similaire... Sans doute se fait-elle plaisir... Difficile d'en partager le résultat!

Si elle se fait plaisir et fait plaisir à ses admirateurs, je ne vois pas où est le mal. Le public a l’air d’apprécier. J’ai son enregistrement de Casta Diva. Bien sûr elle ne pourra jamais le chanter sur scène mais je ne le trouve pas catastrophique. Les puristes ne devraient pas perdre leur temps à l’écouter et la critiquer. Il y a bien d’autres chanteuses plus classiques.
