I'm really liking Bear Mountain pellets. Will be trying Knottywood soon.
@reimundkrohn89382 жыл бұрын
I picked up 40lbs of Pitboss Competition blend with my new Copperhead Smoker last weekend. I figured it was “the cheap stuff” so probably not as good as Traeger…. But the whole family has really enjoyed my labor so far: Eye of Round, Chicken, and last night a Smoked Lasagna. The pellets light fast, burn well, and the Smokey flavour is a perfect addition to everything so far…. I am anxious to try an apple, plum, or cherry… but we’re in no way disappointed in the Pitboss Competition Blend. Excellent value for the money!

I have found that I like Pit Boss the best when it comes to price and flavor. Best value out there. When it comes to the best pellets I've tried so far, gotta go with Knotty Wood Plum. It has the most stick fire smoke flavor to me. Like another person said in the comments, use your favorite pellets in the first 4-6 hours of smoking. After wrapping, switch out to your cheapest pellets just for a heat source. I've got a bag of the Sam's Club Smokehouse brand (40 lbs for $15) and that's how I'm using those up! Looking forward to future pellet cook-offs.

That was helpfull. I was wondering about the flavored pellets I am glad you talked about those. they seem odd to me I don't believe I will be using them. Take care Andrew.

Bear Mountain is my favorite hands down. Somewhat pricey, but when your cooking a $50+ piece of meat, that extra $10 is worth it.
@SLG09212 жыл бұрын
I get a 40lb bag of PB comp blend for $15 at Lowes and I use those in the hopper as my primary heat source and use the more expensive stuff in the smoke tube. If you're going to be wrapping meat, it's not going to get any smoke anyway, why burn the expensive stuff just for heat?

Are you sponsored by Pitt Boss? I have used these, and they are cheap, but I have had temp and flavor issues with every bag.
@ronnyb7302 жыл бұрын
Since the temp change was so distended with the Kingsford, the maintained temp was lower. I think that's why the chicken was more juicy and less crisp. Great info bro. Thanks

I've tried PB, Trager, BB, and Bear Mountain. And for me Bear Mountain by far wins. PB comes in 2nd. BB and Trager has 0 flavor

Have you tried Pitboss Classic Blend Pellets? They are a combination of pecan, mesquite and hickory. I used them on ribs, whole turkey and chicken and they have not disappointed. 40 lbs bag at Wal-Mart is currently around $15. More bang for your buck.
@GrillSergeant2 жыл бұрын
I have and the Classic and Competition blend are a good place to start. Try to find a bag of their charcoal pellets and mix them with the classic blend, you will not be disappointed. Thanks for watching Baltazar!
@markjohnson55562 жыл бұрын
What cooker did you use and does that make a difference with the pellets? Is there an issue using, for example, traeger pellets with a pit boss smoker and vice versa?
@GrillSergeant2 жыл бұрын
Great question Mark! For the most part, pellets are generally in a standard size. Each grill manufacturer will recommend you use their brand but also say you can use any smoking pellet you choose without voiding the warranty. For the smoker I used it was the Pit Boss Competition Series 1600 kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4imnKCLps2Wr6M After owning 15+ pellet smokers I can honestly say I love the CS1600 most, this thing is ready to use in 5 mins and can go from 180-1000 if you have the sear plate open. Zero issues with feeding the pellets and now that I just moved to Texas my fear was the humidity was going to swell my pellets and cause feed issues but so far everything has been working great!

I've heard Traeger and Pit Boss pellets use filler wood and then hardwood oils and flavorings to achieve 'oak', 'pecan', 'cherry' and various other flavors. Is this true in your experience or is it no longer the case?

Read some of the reviews on the Home Depot web site. I tried these and had ash everywhere in the grill. I noticed it first when I wrapped my pork butt, there was a layer of ash/dust on the foil. I also ended up with a clinker in my fire pot. If you use this, I'd suggest mixing it with other pellets and cleaning the fire pot after every cook. I've used the Pit Boss Competition blend. I got a 40 lbs bag at Walmart for $15. I have no complaints, nor did I get any from people that tried the food.

I think Mad Scientist Barbecue did a pellet comparison and something like a pecan wood pellet won but it wasn't from a major manufacturer. You might want to look that up and try it out.

Pit boss hickory and charcoal blend are good. Competition blend is not. I have a bag of apple that I haven’t tried yet. I will be trying Knotty Wood plum and almond pellets over the holiday on some brisket’s and rib’s.

*I buy the Traeger Gourmet Blend at Costco (33lbs bag) and then mix the PB Charcoal Blend in there at 50/50.* I absolutely LOVE the Costco exclusive Traeger Blend, haven’t found anything that gives our family the same flavour than those and I’d be curious to know what’s in them or why.. Been using them now for over 4 years, and constantly try other blends and brands, to no avail. But in my area the PB Hickory Blend is super expensive and comes out much more than the Traeger Costco ones. So I need to find those on sale and then give them a shot.
