The "strange pose" at 1:33 is called rub urination. Deer have tarsal glands on the insides of their legs; the little tufts of fur at the knee joint. During the rut the buck rubs his tarsal glands together and urinates on them to deposit his scent on the ground. Depositing scent from the preorbital glands by his eyes is the reason for the buck rubbing his face on the overhanging branch as shown at :48. I love your videos. Thanks for posting them.

Thanks for the info, Bill. I'm fascinated by their glands. One deer who has always had a strong curiosity about me, opens her preorbital glands when I scratch her head. I'm not sure if there is any other "message" being transmitted. See: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJm4cqWYebuHppI

My guess (and it's only a guess) is that scratching her head with your hands stimulates the same nerves as rubbing her head on a tree branch. It's very likely an involuntary response. There's also a scent gland between the hooves called the interdigital gland. Have you ever seen an alarmed deer stamp their foot? They are stamping a scent into the ground to warn other deer of possible danger. The scent lasts for hours. Deer live in a world of scents that are all but unknown to humans. They know who went where - with whom - based on scents from the various glands. Your yard has probably been "tagged" by deer as safe because of the lack of alarm scent.

Walter is a very busy boy. It gets exhausting just watching them chase the does. The rut is such a crazy time, but can be quite comical. I love them all. Thanks for posting!

What really fun and funny is when the bucks just can't get anywhere with the does they will and i have seen this done before the bucks will try to mate each other, the 1st time I saw it was when I was working security and the 2nd time was in a hunting party my friend was laughing so hard about it he fell out of his blind 😂 and on the way home wouldn't shut up about it 😂

about that rut urination, I wonder also about the arch in the back, if it feels good, relieving, something like the impulse to yawn.
@billpietsch7921
@billpietsch7921 7 жыл бұрын
Both bucks and does usually arch their back when they urinate and defecate. This probably aligns the 'plumbing' and helps speed the process.

Aren't you concerned about being near bucks during the rut? They can be aggressive toward humans, and not just other bucks, at that time of year.
@PelorianPages
@PelorianPages 2 жыл бұрын
For the most part, we know all of these deer, so our situation is not like encountering a deer in the wild. We are more careful with the bucks when they are in rut, but mostly because they are so focused on mating that they may forget where their antlers are if they suddenly turn their heads, for example. Mostly, during the rut they are completely disinterested in us, except for those few bucks who really like us. When they get tired of chasing the females, or challenging other bucks, they are friendly with us like the rest of the year. Still, we are careful around them. In a segment on an advice page online a person wrote about bucks, "They tend to ignore you if you're on their “safe” list, and move away if you're someone who hassles them." I think that's true. They would only attack you if you threatened them. Mostly, even with us, when they are following the does, our "smell" has no interest for them.

So are these considered mule deer or blacktail deer? They almost look like a mixture/cross between the two, and where you guys are located is right where the ranges overlap. Any idea?
@PelorianPages

They are Mule deer, which are a subspecies of Blacktail. I keep asking them what they are, but they just look at me like I'm an idiot. They could be right.
