I have really enjoyed my two X159s, one with an extra fine nib, and one with a fine nib. They're both excellent writers. My 9019 is arriving today and I can't wait to ink it up. There's one thing though about these two girthy pens and other pens with similar section that fails to be mentioned and that is that they can pose some tactical issues when it comes time to inking them up due to their sections being too large to fit into some of the smaller ink bottles such as the 30ml Diamine bottles. I've solved that issue by purchasing and Ink Miser Ink Shot Inkwell for around $9 US. Problem solved :). Thanks for sharing.

The W.S. Titan is huge! Makes everything else look small. I am impressed with the Jinhao 9019 after watching several reviews of the pen. The new converter is wonderful and the No.8 medium nib is a lovely writer. I don't need more pens but I might have to get the 9019.

Super pen, converter alone is more innovation* than Sailor or Pilot ever did on their oversized flagships. Perfect design, if Pilot were to make such design with simple resin and not urushi/silver etc it would be super, yukari royale without urushi probably should cost like 400euro . Though its a cool pen its pointless to buy for people who already have japanese OG stuff, its just hoarding xD.

A not obvious problem with large ink capacity fountain pens is controlling temperature differences induced air expansion in the barrel or converter. One of the functions of the feed is to avoid burping a drop of ink on paper. The complex finned structures in the feed must be capable to buffer/trap ink pushed down by expanding air over an almost empty ink reservoir, without the user noticing. As Montblanc showed long ago how that can be achieved with their 149 piston filler, Jinhao might have noticed their #8 nib unit feed can control an ink capacity over 1,5 ml without issues. I enjoy my Dadao series pens as pocket/travelling pens, that happen to fit my (non-standard) ergonomic preference.

Hi Paul! Thanks for this sharing. I found the comparisons you made very interesting. From my limited knowledge, I understand that it is the first time that a large converter, also screwable, has been created. Undoubtedly the Jinhao demonstrates such engineering capabilities as to make it very competitive in the emblematic fountain pen market.

It’s funny that Jinhao doesn’t even make gold nibs that can hope to compete with Sailor’s sublime ones. And sad how they continue to indulge in their copy- cat antics in aping, wholesale, other pen’s designs.

@@sajjadhusain4146 Jinhao doesn't want to compete with Sailor's gold nibbed pens, that isn't their market segment at all if you didn't notice. Also funny how you deride Jinhao for "aping other pen's design" when Sailor is infamous for "aping" a certain alpine mountain themed pen. You should judge these pens by their performance and not their surface level resemblance to something else. All the actual engineering behind the pen is unique to those companies. The nibs, feed, converter filling system, that is what matters and it's all indigenous.

@@murkser4149 ..You’re the one who likened Jinhao’s choice to make a suitably large converter for its oversized pen as some sort of superior ‘engineering acumen’ compared to Sailor’s admittedly disappointing decision (in my view) to continue to fit a small converter to its flagship pen, the King of Pen. I’ve often called out Sailor for this. Sailor’s cigar shaped pen designs of their 1911 line, for example, certainly came after and resembles Montblanc’s Meisterstuck design. But that’s a rather circuitous example really, when Montblanc itself was no pioneer of that design aesthetic, in the first place. However, Jinhao (not to mention other Chinese brands) ceaselessly make pens that are nearly always replicas of originals by other brands. Jinhao has the new, cheap ‘82’, a brazen copy of Sailor’s Pro Gear Slim. So talking of ‘engineering acumen’ all I said was why not aspire to make a gold nib 82, or a 9019 to rival Sailor pens Jinhao seems to otherwise happily copy - and try sell it to rich Westerners willing and able to buy the pens. Edit: And oh, re: performance, it is almost embarrassing and pretty pointless to try to compare a Sailor 21k gold nib to a run-of-the-mill, very often inconsistent, sub-par Chinese made steel nib.

​@@murkser4149yeah, for instance look at all the companies that have based a pen on a 1920's duofold design. Not all those companies are chinese, either. There really aren't many design you can do for a pen. Sure the jinhao 80 is pretty much a stylistic clone of the Lamy 80 and 2k, but that design is from the 1960's and is far out of patent. The duofold is literally over a hundred years old. There's a point where you have to just give up and let pens look like other pens.

I love that they made the larger converger for the larger pen. It always seem silly to have a tiny converter in a big pen body!

I think he did do a review on the Silvern. Or maybe I’m wrong. I own one, the Tsumugi model, and it’s a magnificent pen, all round. One my favorite Pilots, so far.

If this had been available, I would probably have hiven the X159 a miss. But now, I just don't have a need for another fat pen. 😆

I had bought and then quickly got rid of the Jinhao X159. The new 9019 is certainly slightly tempting. And I’m guessing it will even be much better than the X159. But then I think of the nib and its almost guaranteed inconsistencies. And the annoying lack of many nib size options.

I have 2 X159s and the nibs on both of mine are excellent and were so right out of their cellophane wrappers. I am a southpaw and therefore very nib sensitive and more frequently than I care to I have perform some smoothing on pens that are n factors more expensive then these two. Perhaps it was just the luck of the draw but I think it really boils down to our own subjective evaluations of what makes a nib a good writer for the way we write.

Or else, why would most people say that they are very happy with their X159s and some say they even bought their second or third one. Luckily, I have rarely had nib issues out of the box , even on my very many very expensive pens. Nib experiences and evaluation are also, of course, largely personal and subjective. Again, luckily, by now I know exactly what pens and nibs I want and like most. My pen purchasing decisions are now only constrained by comparative prices and necessary prioritizing before pulling the trigger on buying. I have long stopped buying Chinese pens altogether. I once had 15; I now have just two.
