PenBBS 489 Touchdown filler / Fountain Pen Review

I have always enjoyed the touchdown filing system. And the snorkel even more. Innovative, convenient, efficient and a lot of fun to use. And Sheaffer had the excellent nibs to complement the two ace filling mechanisms. Kudos to PenBBS for replicating the touchdown on a very modern pen. Alas, their nibs are a total kill-joy. This pen tempts me somewhat because of the touchdown filler. The pedestrian PenBBS nib turns me off. And I’m scarcely interested to fit some boring Jowo or another stock German steel nib to this pen as an alternate nib option. This was nonetheless a good review of a new pen with a throwback filling system on display. Thanks for showing.

7:41 I imagine it primarily meant that Sheaffer could use the same Imperial style nib units on multiple pen models.

Enjoy your videos. I am completely with you about "uninspiring plastic feeds." Nice to see the venerable Touchdown get revived. I've read the PenBBS iteration is so similar to Sheaffer they can use Sheaffer cartridges as well. I'm sure there's those who say "sac fillers don't hold enough ink for me" who also use cartridges. All but my combination pens (with a mechanical pencil) hold around exactly the same as a standard international short cartridge. So, yeah, PenBBS! Bring back all the sac filler versions!

Uninspiring or not, plastic fantastic PenBBS feeds mantain flow in (semi)flexible nibs much better than others, even the original feed of the Pilot FA.

The Sheaffer inlaid nibs are much more than gorgeous. Great and innovative pen makers.

@@WhatIInk I'm glad to see you posting! I hope you're doing well. The snorkel is one of the most complicated filling systems ever. I think it is wise Long didn't go that route. Have you seen that Leonardo is coming out with a lever-filler?

What I would really like to know is does the TD sac unit from the 489 fit a legacy? I don’t think Sheaffer will be making any replacements

I think this system is better than a Vac filler . The plug in my 700R perished so I got rid of it and converted it into an eyedropper. What is the weight of the pen? It should be quite hefty with that touchdown filler.

I second that. I like Vac-fillers but they are known to be very susceptible to failing. And a pain to repair. Touchdowns are a lot nicer and better filling system.
