I’m the same here. I collect colored pencils and coloring books. I might not get to all of them but it makes me happy when I look at them. I also write the name and number in each slot of the pencil case so I can put them back quickly. I do that to all my cases. I also swatched out all my pencils and laminated them.

Thanks for the advice! :) They are such a beautiful pencil with a lovely colour range. I think one needs to be patient with them and do a lot of layering - does that sound right? I just need to make myself a cup of tea, put on something calming to listen to, and try them again. :)

Love this!!! and by the way I know have my Poly plus case as well and love it!!! I try ti use my other pencils but tend to fall back on the Prismas and now I have been working finally with the Poly's. Sometimes the other pencils require to much thinking because I am not use to the way they perform. I too love to swatch for the same reasons. I just like to play around and organize. Dont get me wrong I love to color...lately I have been joining color alongs from My colorful country life. Karen gave me hope and the courage to try again after many disasters. Great video! You have an awesome colored pencil collection. Just a note on the Holbein chart in Becky's DIY Color charts. It's organized by Holbein's color order, which is the same as the color list on the inside of the box lid. It combines the pastel colors together with the rest of the colors. A chart with the colors in Box order (100 plus the 50 pastels at the end) will be uploaded soon. 🙂

You have almost made me feel guilty for having so many pencils I don't use (yet) -- and I don't have the expensive ones. But I DON'T feel guilty, because all my sets support some sets with fewer colors. I have about half your pencils, and DO have a bunch you didn't mention. It's okay to really enjoy pencils!!! Star Joy Gold is what I am currently using. I love to color faces, plus everything else out there. I have many skin tone sets. My cases are about half and half flowery/print and solid colors. To each their own!!! I think people should be happy with their pencil cases, and you are, so good!!! Thank you for sharing your collection with us!!! I have trigger finger in my main index finger, which is a real pain in the rear. It is frequently wearing a brace, as is my wrist because it has many issues, tho not carpal tunnel. I have many health issues, and coloring is as good for them as it is bad for my wrist. My wrist/hand will just have to live with it, because I'm not giving up coloring. You have a very soothing voice :-)

This was fun, thank you for doing this! Are you familiar with the Felissimo Tokyo Seeds pencils? Since you mentioned collecting, I thought you might like these. I liked the question below from Veronica, (For non-watercolor pencils, I think you said Polychromo's Prismacolors, Derwent Lightfast, but would like to know what determines which you use). I would be interested in a deep dive into the different Derwent pencils - what you use each pencil type for, differences, etc. I always look forward to your new videos.

You're very welcome - so glad you're enjoying the videos! :) I can certainly put those video ideas on the list - thank you for the suggestions! I don't know how much knowledge/expertise I have to share but I can give it a try and folks can always take what works and leave the rest. :) I gave a fairly long answer to Veronica below (probably too long - I get wordy :)) but you might find a few answers/details there. Mostly, I think what determines which pencils I choose is the paper - for me, softer pencils work better on more textured paper and harder pencils work better on smoother paper. Sometimes the colour range available will come into play - Prismacolor Premier pencils have some lovely colours for autumn colouring. Time/patience/hand pain will also dictate which pencil - if I haven't got a lot of time or my trigger-finger pain is acting up, I'll use Prismacolor. If I've got a lot of time (and am feeling patient :)), then I'll go for the Polychromos. If I've done a Pitt Pen base on a picture, then I'll also go for the Polychromos since they colour-match with the Pitt Pens. I have heard of the Tokyo Seeds pencils but I hesitate at spending that much for a set of pencils. :) I'm a collector but I always have the logical side of my science/math brain running in my head almost like a conscience - "Those are really expensive, Connie - can you buy them open stock? What will you do if you run out of a favourite colour? Do they fill a gap in your collection? Do they have a different feel than something you already own to make them unique and worth buying? Will that many colours make it harder or easier to settle on a colour palette/choose pencils for a picture?" :D Sometimes, I wish the "logic" would just be quiet - but most of the time, it's right. :)

@@colouringchemist Thank you so much for the great answer! I also enjoyed reading your answer to Veronica below. I love what you did with the Poloychromos Plus set and I duplicated it (with a few small purchases) and absolutely love it! I will have to wait until I can purchase Pitt pens, but am looking forward to owning them - I like that they color match the Polys so well! And I will always adore the Prismacolor set. I only have a few Holbiens and 1-2 Derwent pencils. What you wrote in the description box above is great. (Inktense and Graphitent - Drop.Dead.Gorgeous.) lol! My Christmas list continues to grow, hahaha! Completely understand your thoughts on Tokyo Seeds. I tend more to "rationalize" (haha) and in this case, it was "gee, I'm getting 500 pencils - equal to about 4 Polychoromo sets for about the same price." That was all I needed. Plus, it's so fun getting a set in the mail every month. I love mine (so far), but the conversation you had with yourself makes perfect sense so you keep doing you! Keep making these great videos, please!! ♥

I love unique colors to mix in, I feel the Faber castell are classic colors & the others offer variation that’s missing, also own a budget set of pastel colors to mix in, all my pencils are in cases find it easier to work with them like that. 😊

I've struggled to find a sharpener for the large diameter pencils. Creatacolor makes one for their large barrel pencils but it can be difficult to find for a good price (at least here in Canada it can be :)). I've used a craft knife to sharpen them by hand and I'll probably keep doing that unless I end up getting the Creatacolor sharpener. :)

@colouringchemist
@colouringchemist 10 ай бұрын
I can certainly try! :) I'm not an artist, though, so take my opinions with a grain of salt - keep what's useful to you and don't hesitate to toss what's not. :) My best advice for any pencils you're considering - try out a few open stock first (if you can) to see if you like them before investing in a big set. :) I just re-swatched the W&N pencils to refresh my memory on what they feel like and... I still don't like them. :) They have a bit of a weird, sticky lay-down and the colour range seems odd - even considering it's only a 48 count set. The Rose Pink is a terrible pencil - it looks and feels like a cheap neon pencil - it's really hard to get colour out of it and that's really the only true "pink" pencil in that set. There are only 4 greens in the whole set and only one of them is an earth-toned green. There are a few nice colours - the Dusky Rose and Duck Egg are pretty - but you can't buy the pencils open stock which is another draw-back for me. For about the same price on Dick Blick, you can get a 48 set of Prismacolor Premier pencils that I think have a better colour range, a nicer feel, and you can add to it/replace pencils using open stock. But that's just my thoughts - others may love these pencils! :) If I could only keep some of my pencils, I would keep my Polychromos Plus case - that would probably be my top pick. If you haven't seen the video I did on the extras that I add into my Poly set, you can see it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/equ4c6SQjLycgMk If you scroll down in the video description, I list out all the extra pencils. The Polys are a great, high quality pencil and I like that you can get them open stock - to me, it makes more sense to invest in a line of pencils that are available open stock - I don't want to have to buy a whole extra set of something just to get a few pencils that I might have run out of. :) All the extra pencils that I add into my Polychromos Plus case are also available open stock. With pencils that are available open stock, you can also try out a few pencils to see if you like them before investing in a set. My 2nd pick would probably be the Prismacolor Premier pencils - they're just such a no-nonsense pencil and they're fun and easy on my hands. :) They're also available open stock - another bonus. :) My 3rd pick would be the Derwent Lightfast. They're so very pigmented and the colour range really appeals to me - I think they're meant for artists to do landscapes (which is what I'm drawn to :)). And again - available open stock. :) I like the Staedtler Karat pencils for wet and dry colouring but they're becoming harder and harder to find. The Albrecht Durer are lovely pencils both wet and dry and they colour-match to the Polychromos. You used to be able to purchase the Karat pencils open stock (which is why I invested in them) but I don't know if you can anymore. The AD pencils can definitely be purchased open stock. Inktense and Graphitint pencils are specialty pencils that are both GORGEOUS and available open stock. I think they are "extra", though, and one could definitely get along without them. :) Hope that helps!

I think everyone has their own preferences as to which pencils they like best. :) I find that the Lightfast pencils can feel "sticky" on some types of paper and I'm not a fan of that. But then I just re-swatched my Luminance pencils on swatch strips and realized, during the process, that I'm not much of a fan of those pencils, either. :) Both the Luminance and the Lightfast probably work better with artist-grade paper that was purpose-designed for coloured pencil work since that's what those pencils were created for. But that's just my guess. :) Thanks so much for chiming in!

How would you say ARRTX, MArtkart and Kalour compares to each other?
@colouringchemist
@colouringchemist 5 ай бұрын
I find that the Markart pencils feel much like a Polychromos - harder but with a smooth laydown. The Arrtx pencils feel like a cross between a Prismacolor and a Polychromos - they are softer and more crumbly but not as soft as a Prismacolor. The Kalour pencils are probably my least favourite of those three - they are less pigmented and you have to work harder to get colour laydown. I only have the black-barrel Kalour pencils, though - I don't own any of the newer, bigger sets with the full colour barrels so I can't compare to those. The Markart are probably my favourite out of those three but I like the feel of Polychromos pencils. :) Hope that helps!

I'd love your opinion on an Inktense vs Albrecht Durer. I have the Inktense collection (incl. the new 28). Will I enjoy the Albrecht Durer's along with my Inktense? Am I duplicating too many colours? Inktense are missing some of those pastelly colours. Will the AD collection fill that gap? So many questions, so little time. 🙂 I have my inktense and graphitint together as well.
@colouringchemist
@colouringchemist 10 ай бұрын
The Albrecht Durer pencils are a watercolour pencil so they won't have the same intensity on paper that Inktense has (since the Inktense formulation gives the look/intensity of ink when activated and all other watercolour pencils (that I know of) just contain pigment, not ink/dye). If I had to guess, the ink/dye aspect is probably why Inktense pencils don't have many pale/pastel colours - the way to get pale/pastel colours in normal pencils is to add a white pigment in with the coloured pigment but I don't know how one would do that with ink/dye. "White" in ink/dye terms is just... lack of ink (I think). :) I suppose they could formulate an Inktense core that has very little colourant and lots of filler but it might be difficult to get an even dispersion of colourant throughout the core in that case - but I'm getting off topic. Sorry! :) The Albrecht Durer pencils have the same colours available as the Polychromos pencils so if you like the Polychromos colours, you'll like the Albrecht Durer colours. The AD won't be as vibrant or intense on paper once activated so that may give you some of those more pastel-type colours. I've got my swatch cards for both in front of me and I'd say try these AD pencils open stock to fill in some of the colour-gaps: 128, 119, 129, 140, 146, 145, 154, 156, 162, 171, 170, 172, 130, 131, 132, 189, 191, 192, 190, 188, & 186. You could also add in a few of the Lyra Rembrandt Aquarelle pencils open stock: 29, 35, & 39. Those are just my thoughts, though - take what's helpful and toss the rest! :D Thanks so much for stopping by!

I’m confused. Is polychrome a set to themselves or do they come in different names. I just ordered a 36. Pack of faber Costello’s just because they were polychromes. They were expensive so I thought it must be a good set. I have a lot of pencils, but I don’t know if they are wax or oil based. How can I find out. Enjoyed your tutorial by the way.

Faber Castell is a company that makes a few different lines of coloured pencils - their Polychromos line is their top (most professional) line of pencils. You can get the Polychromos pencils in different set sizes or you can buy them individually (through "open stock"). The full line consists of 120 different pencil colours. From what I can tell, trying to figure out whether pencils are "oil-based" or "wax-based" isn't terribly helpful as pencils aren't actually made that way. :) If you like, you can watch a video that I made about that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nICrnI17eN2Fjas Hope that helps!

Regarding the Polychromos Plus case, I know you have a lot of Lyra pencils in there, and that beautiful Derwent Red. When it comes to supplementing/complimenting the Polychromos set, is there a chart you followed or you just bought the pencils that you felt were missing? Would you be able to provide a list? I have used my Polychromos for a few weeks now and I definitely feel the missing red. So that is on my list to buy. And I'm definitely missing some greens and lighter blues too. Much like you, I seem to gravitate towards the more earthy muted tones, retro, as you called them :D At the same time I'm trying to force myself to use brighter colours and more vibrant schemes to challenge myself. But for sure the warmer greens will be the first ones I need to replace! I'm terrified of becoming a collector so I only have my Polys, a few open stock Derwents and an old Marco Raffine set that I'm actively trying to use up. I sold my Brutfuners as I absolutely hated them and am not looking to buy any other sets of pencils. Just need to fill the gaps in the Polychromos colour range a bit.

I hear you about worrying about collecting too many - I probably have too many already. :) I try to always be thinking, "Will this set of pencils fill a gap in my collection or would they just be duplicating something I already have?" I definitely do have some pencils sets that duplicate others - we'll see if I decide to get rid of any going forward. :) I did a whole video on what's in my Polychromos Plus case (in case you hadn't seen it :)): kzbin.info/www/bejne/equ4c6SQjLycgMk In the video description, I give a list of all the pencils I added to the Polys to round out the colour range. I had originally gotten the idea from hearing Karen (ZucchiniKitty) talk about using two Holbein pencils (Cherry Blossom and Rose Pink) along with her Polychromos pencils to add in some paler pinks - and I added on from there. :) I just chose other colours that I felt were missing from the Poly range. Those muted tones/retro colours are just so beautiful, aren't they? :) And yes - challenging oneself to step outside our comfort zones is such a great thing to do! Hoping I can do more of that in the future. :) Thanks so much for commenting and sharing!

@@colouringchemist I have watched that Polychromos Plus video at least three times and not once did I think to check the description box! Thank you for the info. 😅

@@colouringchemist Follow up question. If I know I won't like the Holbeins (I have a fairly firm belief that they would be frustratingly soft for me to use), what is the next best set to try to find pencils with similar colours to fill the Polychromos gaps left over from Lyra and Lightfast? I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but you're the first colourist I've stumbled upon that has presented a case like your Polychromos plus and I know that if I buy a full set of some other kind of pencil then I will just use that full set. But if I approach my Polychromos case with a Plus mindset and just get some pencils from other sets, then there's hope that I'd mix and match. I have tried some Lightfast pencils and I liked them. I didn't even mind Procolour, and I know a lot of people don't really like them. From what I've read, I think I will like Lyra.

No worries about asking questions - I'll always try my best to answer. :) Karen (ZucchiniKitty) was the one who gave me the idea to build the Polychromos Plus case so you never know - there might be others out there, too! :) You might want to try the Markart pencils. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08YDCZWM9/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_4?smid=A3AO20SQT0QRR7&psc=1 I think they are also sold under the Nyoni brand. You can't buy them open stock but they are super inexpensive - the set of 120 is currently $23.99USD. They are a harder pencil and the 120 set has some really unique colours - you could probably use some of them instead of the Holbein pencils. The one Holbein pencil colour that's really difficult to find in other brands is the Sky Mist 371 but it's only one colour - you probably wouldn't even miss it. :) Hope that helps!

Valid point. :) Partly, I think I'm a bit of collector and having the pencils and being able to look at them and have them on my shelves makes me happy. :) I have stopped purchasing complete sets of pencils, though, because you're absolutely right - I've realized that pencils aren't the first supply I reach for to colour. :) Thanks for chiming in!

No, you're a perfectionist. We can predict all your moves. You need a professional editor. 2 hours and you're not really very good. You've got the wrong approach to sets of pencils. You're supposed to embrace the strangeness of colours that you think are weird. Sets are supposed to be unique, not how you are approaching them. Doesn't matter if they've used the same name for another pencil. The set is allowed to play around with the colours. Take ownership of deciding on a set for your artwork. If you limit yourself to a set, then your artwork is unique to that set. They're making your art unique, you just have to control yourself and trust in the manufacturers. It's not weird for the makers to install a different version of a particular pencil. You can't step back and look at the overall perspective. Stop suiting yourself with every set of pencils.
