Modern archers with modern bows HAVE completed the 12 axes challenge but it would take a MASTER archer in those days. Plus no one else can string Ody's bow (in some legends because there is a trick to it, in others because it requires incredible strength, or both).
@EpicNerdsWithCameras20 сағат бұрын
There are some theories due to the way the bow is described that it could have been an early composite bow, which is strung in a different way from the type of bow most people would have been used to at the time. Composite bows would have been very uncommon during that time period, so it's possible that the suitors had never even *seen* one, much less strung one.
@XxAgeofLovexX18 сағат бұрын
@@EpicNerdsWithCameras I heard that it was a recurve bow, either way the trick was to string the bow in reverse.
@kennethmorgan879515 сағат бұрын
@@XxAgeofLovexX it is either Recurve or Reflex, the problem is we can't know for certain because descriptions are... sparse. We know this: It was "palintonos" which means roughly bent backwards. We don't know how much it bent that way or in what way it did so. Regardless it was a rare kind of bow for the area and these young idiots (most of the suitors at this point were in their 20s lore wise) had likely never seen one let alone had any idea how to string one (since both require more than simple strength regardless of possible enchantments from Athena).

Just for some added context (even though I suppose others comments might have it). During the “waiting” in this animatic, they show Argos, Odysseus’ dog, and the spirit of his Mother again. Those two plus Penelope had waited since he left for war. His mother died waiting, Argos is barely holding on to life waiting for his master, and Penelope may be all that is left. (Yes, I know Telemachus is waiting too, but he hadn’t yet known his father before the war).

6:53 In some iterations, the maids who serve Penelope want her to move on. The maid peeking in through the door goes off to tell the suitors what she’s _actually_ been doing.
@TearsOfLa21 сағат бұрын
Penelope's challenge is actually much more cunning than initially appears. Its commonly thought that Odysseus used a special type of recurve bow (cant remember the greek name, something like Palimos), which would have been a really rare style in greece at that time. Recurve bows have a special way of stringing them that would not be known to the suitors, so in reality they have 3 challenges in one: Have the strength to string the bow, the intelligence to figure out the technique, and the skill to shoot it through the axes. If the suitor didn't have all 3, then he wasn't even worth consideration. (Also, being pedantic, its the hole where the handle goes into the axe, with the wood handle taken out, so a weird oblong hole that would be difficult to shoot through one of, let alone 12. Not sure why most interpretations invent new holes on the axes to shoot through, its already got a hole)
@Angelderbat22 сағат бұрын
The most challenging thing about the Challenge that Penelope arranged is shooting through the axes, because arrows fly in an arc. This means that you must have incredible strength and precision and an incredibly powerful bow to shoot an arrow with enough speed that it flies straight for long enough to fly through 12 equally spaced axes. This would be a similar feat to shooting a barely visible target a great distance away and hitting the bullseye. It’s very impressive, and something that Odysseus was famous for accomplishing in his youth. Penelope’s Challenge was basically “prove you are as good an archer as my Odysseus, and you can be king.” She knew it was nearly impossible because only Odysseus had done it before.
@riduanaqil145221 сағат бұрын
Some version said that Athena enchanted the bow so nobody else can use it (Telemachus took like 3 or 4 tries and almost got it). Some people thinks it's some sort of recurve bow or smth but basically the challenge all boils down to 3 things: 1. The knowledge of the technique to even string the bow 2. The skill to aim accurately into the axe heads 3. The strength required to fully draw the bow and shoot through all 12 of those axe heads
@adamharith78216 сағат бұрын
The fact that the suitor couldnt even pass the first step is funny af. They couldn't even string the bow 😂😂
@garethmorton562015 сағат бұрын
The recurve bow part is from the term used for it in the Greek “palintonos” which translates as bent or curved backwards bow, which was the Ancient Greek term for a recurve. When not strung, unlike standard bows which were straightish staves, it would form an almost horseshoe shape and the bow arms would need to be flexed all the way across the body of the bow to string it, which wouldn’t be possible with the standard bow stringing technique.

So no one could sting Ody’s now because it is a bow called a palintonos, which is Greek for "bent or stretched backwards". So even if they could string it by some miracle it would then take 200lbs to pull the string back.

Hi, this tidbit about Penelope sitting at the end of the axes that you’re gonna see in these comments is actually a very recent fabrication/headcanon/misunderstanding of the lyrics, taking the metaphorical soliloquy of Penelope’s longing for Odysseus, “I’d Rather die than grow old without the best of you” as literal. No, she did not sit or stand at the end of the axes in case one of the suitors was able to string the bow and made the shot. She’s cunning and resilient, and wouldn’t do something so stupid. Furthermore, she loves her family, and in the Odyssey, Telemachus is actually the first person who gives stringing the bow a try. Furthermore, the suitors are vile and morally bankrupt but they’re certainly not idiots, they would be able to figure out pretty quickly that Penelope was trying to get herself killed if she was standing at the end of the axes that the Suitors were instructed to shoot through. Just clearing some misinformation, love your content.

edited the first part coz apparently I was wrong about it being a version of the odyssey 15:00 It's a popular hc for Epic that Penelope stands at the end of the axes so in the off chance anyone really was able to string the bow and shoot through the holes, they wouldn't be able to take her as his queen bc she'd be killed by the arrow. Not sure if that's what Jorge had in mind when he was composing the lyrics, but it does give some sort of new meaning to "I'd rather die than grow old without the best of you". The best to her was only Odysseus, anyone else was subpar, so she'd rather die. It's my favorite hc coz it just gives that extra flavor text that she's THAT loyal that she'd rather follow Ody in death 18:57 The tree is actually their bed! One of the most romantic gestures Ody was known for was that there was this olive tree he and Penelope really liked, and when they got married, he carved the tree into their wedding bed and built their palace around it. But the special thing about this bed is that the tree it was carved from is still alive, the roots are still attached to the ground and it still grows leaves. It's an incredibly romantic metaphor of lasting love and devotion to your partner 19:29 Another fun fact bc while the dog was featured in the official Legendary animatic, he's never been brought up in the songs (and you need to cry more lol). That's Ody's beloved pet Argos, and he's waited for Ody for exactly as long as his family has. He's an extremely loyal dog who waited at the gates of the palace every day in case Ody comes back. I believe he was Ody's childhood dog? Or at least a little older than Telemachus. Yeah the entire family, even their pet, is loyal af lol

Penelope's challenge is actually pretty much impossible. The bow Odysseus used was a very uncommon type of bow (I forget what it's called) that pretty much looked inverted when unstrung, and had to be bent back with nearly inhuman force (I think about 350 pounds if I remember correctly) AND required a special trick to string it. So aside from having to hit a nearly impossible shot that they weren't skilled enough to make, the suitors couldn't even string the bow because they lacked both the strength and the knowledge to do so. Only Odysseus himself could do it (and Telemachus in some versions), so completing the challenge would be how Ody proves his identity when he returns home. In some versions the bow was even enchanted by Athena so that even if the suitors had the strength to string the bow they still wouldn't be able to, but I think in Epic specifically they just are not strong enough. This challenge, as well as the trick with the shroud, shows how smart and cunning Penelope is, to the point that her mind rivals that of Odysseus, which is really why he fell in love with her to begin with. I love the way Jorge wrote her in this song!

I haven’t seen another comment explaining it so I will! Odysseus’ bow is occasionally referred to as a recurve bow (varies from source to source). Visually, it looks different to how a ‘normal’ bow looks (Gwendy has animated it like this in her animatic but understandable if you want to save hers for a different video). Essentially, the limbs of the bow are extremely curved ‘backwards’. A recurve bow only looks ‘normal’ once it is strung. Unstrung, it looks like it was curved inwards. You need a lot of strength to bend the limbs ‘backwards’ and then string it. Ody was given his bow by a friend who also showed him how to string it. Plus, Ody is really strong so he has no problem with it. This is why the suitors wouldn’t be able to string it by themselves. Also, shooting through 12 axes would require a lot of precision. With our without the recurve bow, I’m sure that would be hard. Thank you for reading my rant 🥰

Time for some fun/'not so fun facts from a greek mythology nerd Only Ody kan string the bow and Penelope knows it 1.Ody was trained to string that bow sense he was small due to the bow being so strong and difficult to string that only a person as strong as a demigod or traind to string the bow can string it 2. In some versions of the oddesy the bow and string can be interpreted as a representation of the Union between Penelope and odysseus families yet another reason why only Ody can string it ( there are a lot of versions with a little tweaks due to the Odyssey being a big game of telephone for the longest time in Greek history😅) And now for the not so fun fact Those axses were secretly aimed in the direction of Penelope's throne which means that if one of the suitors were to actually succeed in shooting the bow it would have killed her because she refuses to be with anybody but her husband. In the Odyssey book that I have Penelope only moves away from her throne when she realises that the old beggar (Odysseus in Disguise courtesy of Athena) allowing him to shoot the bow without hurting her because even though he's under a divine disguise she can recognise her husband anywhere
