If someone hasn’t mentioned it yet, the wallpaper Sophia peels is reminiscent of the short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charolette Perkins Gilman about a woman’s decent into madness, an allegory about how women in medical situations are never taken seriously.

I’m really surprised they didn’t mention this in the breakdown highlighting how oppressive patriarchy society is for women, leading to women’s lack of agency and any woman stepping outside the norm being deemed as “insane.” They kind of hint at it without fully saying that’s what’s happening in the episode. Amazing episode.

@@Thisisabirthdaypony Listen, I don’t know where you’re getting this information from, maybe from children’s fiction, but throughout history absolutely any protest movements consisted mainly of men, while women stayed at home with their families, because the bourgeoisie absolutely don’t care who to rob for profit, therefore there is nothing to show, since the series is quite realistic, thank God

@@Creyole The yellow wallpaper is likely a nod to the short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper' by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, where the color and pattern symbolize mental breakdown and confinement. In the story, the character sees a woman trapped in the wallpaper, reflecting her own struggles. The show might be using that as a metaphor for a character's psychological descent or transformation.

You missed the symbolism of her yellow dress in congruence with the very long necklace splitting her in half as well as the strings on the back of her dress, representing her acceptance of both halves of herself. The monster that was made, and Sophia herself. She is turning a new leaf and recognizing that she is who she is because of who raised her and because of her father throwing her in Arkham, and she’s found a peaceful resolve knowing that now she is a force to be reckoned with as opposed to a perfectly molded falcone.

@@henryRobshirts screen crush is all about metaphors and finding double meanings. I don’t think it’s a reach considering the writers and costume department dress her that way for a reason. Everything Sophia has worn has been representing of her current, past or foreshadowed struggles. This is the first time she’s worn anything so revealing and bright and the way the strings on her back and her necklace split her in half I thought was symbolic. Maybe you’re right tho. I just thought maybe I was on to something.

I feel like you guys need some feminine perspective in your writing staff... Sofia came across as an abused survivor from the moment we met her in episode one, and if anything, I was pretty much thinking "oooh her paying people back is going to be epic and well earned." And it was. I never disliked her or felt she was a villain, nor do I now. The show basically showed her living out the revenge fantasy a lot of women feel towards people to turn their backs to abuse. To me, that is what made this episode so phenomenal. It didn't shy away from showing her abuse, and it also had the guts to show her "hell hath no fury" with equal gravitas.

Cool y'all got this out so fast, BUT details matter. Case in point: Carmine did not frame Sophia for her mother's death. That was attributed to her mental illness. He framed her for the more recent set of murders Summer was investigating-it isn't too much of a leap to assume The Hangman had killed many more ladies between his wife & the ladies at 44 Below. Otherwise solid breakdown as per usual 👏🏻

Sorta both. But Oz definitely bought that jacket with Money Carmine gave him for bringing him this information. ( don't think Oz wanted Sophia to get in Real trouble. )

@@timothylangston3560it’s not sorta both. We already knew she was the only one who cared about him she didn’t need to point out his coat for us to understand this. She pointed it out to alert the audience he has made a move. We are meant to understand how quick witted she is. And you don’t have to “think” he didn’t want her to get in trouble. He was brought to tears explaining that to her in the previous episode. Are we all watching the same show?

This makes Batman almost as responsible when he has villains sent to Arkham. At least that’s what I think Matt Reeves is showing us, that and the possible Court of Owls hint from the Batman movie.

This episode was AMAZING. The only thing I don't get is how did Johnny survive the gas attack? It seems like Sophia "spared" him intentionally, but . . . how?

Big thematic reference: When Sofia Falcone is in here cell and sees the wall peeling away to reveal the wallpaper in the room where she discovered her mother dead, I think that's a reference to The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. It's an early work of feminist literature with the exact same theme as this episode, namely that men keep claiming to want to help but they only want to control and subjucate women. In the story, a man confines is wife, a journal writer, in an empty room in their mansion. She is totally isolated from anyone, with her husband trying to cure her ""temporary nervous depression - a slight hysterical tendency" - a total bullshit diagnosis. This treatment eventually drives her mad, and she believes that there is a woman hiding in the wallpaper that she must free. In The Penguin, that woman is her true self.

I just looked this up on Wikipedia - the cover of the edition they show there even looks a bit like the wallpaper in Sofia's mother's room.

It's been a minuite when I said "Damn this guy's a jackass" about the maincharacter, like the penguin is a complete villain. and yet I'm still rooting for him. Same with sofia, but watching this some of the things you said felt like a stretch but it made more and more sense as u went on to explain, This is a great analysis! and now I have more care for this show

Many thanks to Colton, Harriet, Brianna, Lee and Johnathan (which I'm guessing is a misspelling, but that's how it's spelled in this video's description)! 🐧

I honestly wish they could cancel the follow-up movie to The Batman and turn it into a series like this. To think of the stories that could be told if they weren't confined to the time limits of a conventional motion picture.

My theory from the jump was that she went down for Alberto. It was obvious she wasn’t the murderer of women. I thought maybe Al was just a chip off the old block. But I do like what they did here.
