One of the big takeaways from this resolution is that Magnus Carlsen has agreed to compete against Hans Neimann in future in-person tournaments. At the start of this whole scandal, Magnus said he wouldn't play in any tournaments that Hans played in, which would basically instakill Hans's career, since every major chess tournament will invite Magnus over Hans if they're forced to pick one.

@HighViscosity6 ай бұрын
Second chances, most often, are best reserved for mistakes. Cheating isn't that. It's an intentional and damaging breach of someone's trust. Strangely, for as common as it is, I've never heard a 'good' reason to cheat that I could understand. It usually boils down to one partner feeling they're lacking something like affection. You know what your recourse is, then? You break up. That's it. If you can't do that, then you are simply a coward. Only the worst of us can find rationale behind cheating, and if they can once, it's not outrageous to imagine they would again. That's not the same as saying they can't change, but you shouldn't expect anyone to have to throw in behind someone who's already shown they can be duplicitous. Some things in this world are unforgivable. If you break someone's trust, their defenses go up. If you want to be a better person, you shouldn't need a chorus telling you to do so. If you can't grow otherwise, you probably weren't capable of growth in the first place.

@@suzann824 i posted a bigger comment earlier. But the judge dismissed two of the federal claims.. which should have been.. with prejudice. The fact there was a settlement tells you there was in fact ongoing civil action. These two were NOT dismissed for lack of merit

One thing I don't agree with is how people like Charlie point out that his past as a cheater in important but none of them address the other dude. Man is such a loser he accused a guy of cheating without any proof cause he was mad he lost then went out of his way to try and ruin his career by getting everyone against him. If he truly didn't cheat then those actions are genuinely unacceptable and he's a horrible piece of shit after blatantly and knowingly hurling such a false accusation at someone to try and desperately maintain his image as the top chess player by using that title and prestige to turn everyone against him fully knowing that he was leveraging the communities trust and belief in him.

A lot of chess players online cheat when they think their opponent is cheating. I saw a game on KZbin where a Master was doing a rating climb (all points get refunded to the opponent) and he got paired up with with a 1600 rated opponent with his rating being much lower than. Naturally, the 1600 rated player thought he was getting cheated when he saw how strong the play was. I mean, after all, the true rating of the master is 2300. So he started using a chess engine. The master then picked up that the guy started cheating and reported him and the 1600 was banned

Either Hans Niemann used mission impossible level technology to cheat or Magnus Carlson and the entire chess community conspired to defame an innocent man. Both movie worthy.

There’s a chance that there was a mole in Magnus’ circle, the main point of speculation was Hans miraculously studied Magnus’ opening line (which Magnus had never opened with prior to the match) the morning of, as he stated in a post game interview. Perhaps Magnus did that to try and prove/flush out the collaboration
@princessaria Жыл бұрын
Those are not the only two options lol. It is equally possible that Magnus simply believed he cheated because of the circumstances (specifically him apparently preparing for an opening Magnus has never used in competition and having suspicions of a mole), and that everyone else looked at it and went “yeah, that’s valid.” Then it came out that Hans did cheat in online games, which added even more justification to those doubts of a legitimate win. I don’t think any of the parties actually involved in this situation thought he used cutting edge tech, they thought he simply knew the opening in advance, which makes it a lot easier to prepare for.
@wakannnai1 Жыл бұрын
@@princessariaCheating online and cheating in a real game are two different things. It does not indicate real life behavior by any means. Many people would be comfortable cheating in an online video games with no real stakes (other than a ban) but would not do so in real life. There was no indication or evidence that Hans Niemann ever cheated in a real life tournament. This was always used as "evidence" to muddy the waters in order to support dubious claims of irl cheating by Magnus Carlsen. There was never any evidence of cheating as well. Magnus Carlsen should never had made unsubstantiated claims like this publicly and should have been bought up in private to the Tournament Organizers. Nothing claimed here by you is any indication of cheating. Hans Niemann getting lucky in his preparation is just that. Him getting lucky. The chess community did him dirty to suck up to Magnus. It's pretty disgusting if you think about it.

The way i see it, if you look at magnus carlson’s career, since he was a kid, he’s always had an ego. Like playing a grand champ and walking away mid match to watch other peoples games, or purposely showing up to matches late and only having like 30 seconds left to play. It’s very easy to lose and assume the person you’re facing is cheating, And this case is no different.

Just my opinion, I think Magnus was having a bit of a struggle the past year. There was more drama with him last year then just Hans, even to the point he had stopped playing chess in general for a few month's, allowing himself to be dethroned from the top spot (just temporarily). Hans has always been open and regretful about his online cheating. The two incidents when he was found to be cheating were when he was young. Like just finding hair in new places young. He's an adult now. He should be held accountable for what he did, but not chastised for where he's going. When you play chess at Magnus and Niemann's level, it truly can come down to luck or one wrong move. They are both 8 moves ahead and practiced different strategies for each game. Hans said he had just so happened to practice defending against the plays Magnus was making. If any cheating was involved, it was someone from Magnus team selling information, but truly I think it was just luck. The look on Niemann's face when he won was absolute shock.

People initially balked at the $100 million in damages that Niemann was demanding, but it makes sense in the context of Carlsen's own net worth which is like over $50 million right now in his early 30s, and could probably double over the rest of his professional career just through investments and market returns, etc. The argument goes that since Niemann beat Carlsen in such a public and high profile match, he has a credible claim to having been denied a similar career trajectory. It will be interesting to see what happens to him now as a cleared professional player WRT his baggage but at the very least he'll make the game interesting for a while
