Something you didn’t mention was the monetization was also way worse when the game came back. Like for example, some quest were locked behind specific characters and skins and the game would give them to you at random even if you don’t have the specific character or costume for the quest, so the only way to compete the quest is by spending money to buy the character and or skin. And you would want to get the quest done since it is basically the only way to grind the battle pass. On top of all this, some quests are locked behind event exclusive cosmetics so if you didn’t get the limited time cosmetic you couldn’t even do the quest

Agreed. The only thing that I am hopeful of when it comes to the development of Ai (generally hate it) is that it will make a difficulty level to where the bots will feel as if you are fighting actual people who can think of strategies and counter strategies

I mean, you can still buy a game and enjoy it for the moment. Even if a game NEVER shut its servers down and is fully capable offline, then sooner or later the playerbase will be dead and you will essentially be in the same exact situation regardless.

@@Whitedudeabove yeah, but in the sense that many games at least have the ability to play with bots or something, and almost all games more than 10 years old had some single player campaign or modes you could do without multiplayer. Some of the games had bots and the potential to be offline like "Evolve" but they required the connection so people who bought it can't even play solo. Diablo was smart and allowed online but you could play solo, but #4 decided to not allow offline play which made a lot of content more difficult when there were desyncs etc especially with hardcore characters.

@ But again, then if a game doesn't have a singleplayer campaign (which many don't do) and you can't play with bots. Then even if you objectively knew for a fact the servers wouldn't ever shut down, you would still be in the same situation. This is sort of my point. It feels a bit weird to not buy a game because maybe sometime in the future you won't be able to play it. Why not simply enjoy it now? Obviously, to be clear, it would be infinitely better if it did have bots and singleplayer and offline functionality and all that.

@@Whitedudeabove there are some that I would, but now there are dozens of ftp ones with almost every genre with the online component so you can play those for their duration and without an upfront risk of them not working well rather than sinking around 100 bucks to play for a while if the game functions on launch and you don't have connection issues.

As someone who has been there since the Beta, the game has its flaws, yes, from both the Beta and the full release. But I didn't care about that, I had a ton of fun from this game because the idea alone was just awesome to me. It was WB's attempt at a platform fighting game, and this was an indie game dev team's first attempt at a big game like this The full release did have a TON of problems because of things like the insanely slow pacing. However, I will give the main release a bit of credit, they had cool Rift Mode ideas, and in my opinion, a lot more BETTER characters included like Agent Smith, Beetlejuice, heck this game basically helped revived Jason Voorhees' modern-day popular when his legal disputes mostly settled and he could appear in other projects. To wrap this up, it is ashame that Multiversus is ending, but I'm not all that surprised about it. I'm gonna miss this game and I hope that 10 or 15 years from now, we get a brand new WB fighting game by different people, don't make it live service game, not have greedy devs attached to it and hopefully a new different game will have a better lifespan than this had

Yeah I spent $100 on Video Horror Society (VHS) it was a GODLIKE game, but they never advertised it past getting streamers to play a bit and then it eventually went offline forever, studio shutdown. This stuff keeps happening and its so annoying. VHS was way better than Multiversus though, Multiversus feels like a mobile game with its menu and how many times you gotta claim all sorts of different currencies

The saddest part about these live service games is that I don't give them a chance anymore unless they explode in popularity because I know this will happen to them EVERYTIME. Devs looking for the next Fortnite and won't settle for anything less. I like fighting games but they are hard to learn and take time, I wasn't going to waste my time on a game that could shut down in a year.

Comparisons of this to Concord is understandable, but a bit unfair tbh, since MultiVersus was (and still will be when offline) very recognizable and fun to play. Even when it was at its peak in Beta, I couldn't recommend to my friends to play it, since my friends like specific characters & if those characters were locked, recommending buying it or grind wasn't something I'd do. Whereas I have friends who've seen MCU films/TV series, so saying 'let's play Marvel Rivals' knowing all the characters are playable, means if they liked Thor or Moon Knight then they can play those characters. That's enough to get them on once, which is enough to potentially get them invested in the game, a game that has tie-in MCU skins in the shop. It's just a better, smarter business model. I loved beating people up as Velma Dinkley & I love playing support in online games. For it to come back with support role completely removed & Velma nerfed to hell and back, just killed all hype for me. These two issues + vanishing for a year make it such a big fumble for a game that had sticking power.

To me, the spookiest thing about this shutdown is how similar the timing is to the beta’s shutdown. New Season releases in December, We eventually learn that the end date for the season has been extended, Radio Silence from PFG plus a content drought, Devs finally break the silence, but only to announce that the game is shutting down.

I liked the game a lot too, but couldn't agree more - the beta was exciting and busy, but they lost all momentum by ending the beta. When the full release was generally worse than the beta and you introduce worse battle pass grind it pushes away people like me who could become core players with a more accessible game... The multiversus beta had a glaring issue when it came to it's competitive side, and that was it's air dodge mechanic. Multiversus's air dodge was an instant, lagless, invincible movement option in a game where most moves had very little lag, so at the top level the game was just spaghetti and the better character won. To fix this, the devs did absolutely the wrong thing and just limited access to the airdodge in the full release and slowed the game's movement to a hault. They should have made airdodge no longer invincible and kept the movement speed as is but they didn't for unknown reasons.

The beta’s movement and mechanics were too advanced for casuals/younger gamers. Eventually you hit a skill gap where you can’t keep up and it’s not fun. The game lost most of its player base early on from that and the unpolished aspect of the game. The full release update caters to lower skill players but the only people who were still around to care were the top 10% and it makes them all leave too. Keeping the game fun at all levels of skill nowadays is one of the hardest things to do.

The problem was their dev team wasn’t big enough and they didn’t have enough features before going into live beta. They basically HAD to take the game offline to fix some things. Of course, then they came back greedier than ever and that super killed hype for the game.

i think this underlines a problem starting in current the current gaming, growing very tired of games fast and throwing them out looking for the next. yes this isn’t new but what’s so different is how fast it’s been happening these past 2 years

The "full" release was a fun game, but the fact that they changed the gameplay enough to split the playerbase AND increase the monetization to a frustrating level really turned off a lot of my and many players hype for it. I played through every season, and it really feels like they had no idea what they were doing throughout the game's release, trying to make something of the game to satisfy players (adding shields, a teching mechanic, a sort of wave dashing) when they couldn't get simple hitboxes and balancing right. Every update felt like I was falling for the rake gag getting hyped for the new content and characters only to get slapped in the face with sudden paywalls, grindfests, and gameplay bugs/issues that take several weeks to maybe fix. Inevitable, but also completely unavoidable. In another multiverse, Multiversus is as big as Smash, maybe bigger, but in ours it has died twice.
