But why would I listen to the people who aren't affected on the subject of if bullying is bad in comparison to those who have been affected? I think a major point Charlie is missing is that the apology video isn't just about Ian: it's also about the audience he cultivated and the groups of people that were victimized by them. I think there is far less people who believe he "created" this bigoted audience than Charlie thinks, but I also think that it's pretty common knowledge that you don't need to create something to help keep it alive, especially if they have such a massive platform. So of course he feels guilty about that, not just the immediate consequences of shouting slurs in every vid. As for the victims of said actions, they are the ones Ian is truly apologizing to, because I think he's a decent person now and they're the ones who were affected the most. Whether or not they forgive him, it's up to them, but he was a big (tho not the only) reason why it seemed normal for them to face daily bigotry (I would know because I was one of them). The apology wasn't just a way for Ian to move on with himself, but also a genuine try to give closure to the ones he was responsible for indirectly hurting.

He created a community of racism. Don't dumb it down to simply "hate" as if that's all it is. His community/fans follow behind what they think he believes. Making racist jokes gives the vibes that you are a fellow racist, which attracts racists to follow you and join your community

As a black male I never thought HE was racist, but he normalized hate speech within his community whether it was intentional or not. I respect Charlie and respect his opinion on the matter, but unfortunately he lives in a reality that’s different from most minorities. He will never fully understand how these slurs impact people, and I don’t mean that in a hateful way. Being black I knew at an early age that my life wouldn’t be the same as most white peoples’ lives; thats just the current state we live in as a civilization (especially as an American). EDIT: Someone in the comments pointed out that Ian’s supporters would often say “its just words” in response to people criticizing his use of slurs and I distinctly remember that phrase appearing all the time in Ian’s comments section. The harsh truth is sometime its not just words, they can come from a rooted history of malice and oppression. These words represent the stereotypes that still continue in some ways to this day. They can represent generations of literal slavery, torture, and death not even exaggerating here. I’m not saying all nasty words should be banned or something, but people to need recognize these words come from somewhere. It was funny for Ian to spew them at the time because we knew they were taboo. So maybe we should ask ourselves WHY they became controversial phrases in the first place.

Watched all 3 vids and I'll admit your take was surprising. While the labels on you are complete lunacy, I think the main problem is that there was just no productive discussion to be found from analyzing his apology and trying to insinuate that he shouldn't have felt as bad as he did, his content shouldn't have had such a huge impact, it shouldn't be as big of a deal as folks are making it out to be, etc. I understand the sentiment, but there's a difference between what *should* be and what *is.* He DID feel bad. People WERE affected, as your own comments are increasingly finding the motivation to relay to you. Ian was huge back then and I don't think I need to remind anyone what was going on in 2016. It is what it is. You hit the nail on the head at 12:20. As many have said, Ian's apology was for those people. I don't think it applies to you- and hey, I'm glad it doesn't- but you're an analytical commentator, so to make an entire video about it just felt odd, especially with the only takeaway being a notion of "I don't think he's as guilty as he felt." I totally agree that the recipients of Content Cop were not angels and making fun of trash/dangerous content is fair. Way too much of the spotlight is sitting on the CC concept. I don't get that. I hope this makes sense. Reasonable viewers don't think you're the boogeyman, lol. I just feel a bit more perspective was required here.

I think the issue is more that, he made an apology acknowledging how influential, and significant the role his content played in that KZbin era was, and that apology was healing for a lot of the people affected. Most of us understand that he was heavily influenced by his surroundings, but still believe that him taking responsibility for the part his content played with an apology was incredibly helpful and affirming. I won't lie, I remember when Idubbbz was really popular, some my friends genuinely used him and his videos to justify saying the N word, and would literally quote him and his slurs to me, a black guy. I tried to brush it off, but in hindsight, he did have a genuine effect on the way people viewed such behavior, and I think it's great he's apologizing for it. He was a lot of the reason why that type of "humor" was so prominent. He wasn't merely a product of his time, which I think is the major misunderstanding here. Also, not to pull the race card, but a white guy, especially an adult, would definitely have an easier time seeing it as "just edgy humor".

I don't think Charlie fully understands the impact it had on a lot of people. I'm both black and gay, and around that time I was younger and a lot less secure in my identity. With the content idubbbz made, the normalizing of slurs and making fun of gay people it was just very hard to stay positive. And it wasn't just him. Because his content was so popular, other creators started copying it and it became cool to say slurs. Then it started leaking into real life. Hearing kids and teens say these slurs wasn't uncommon at all. And then with pewdiepie dropping the n-word hard r and all, or saying 'nibba' and people claiming 'it's not a big deal', it was like our opinions and feelings didn't matter. We were just being talked over. I steered clear from so many youtube channels because it was becoming bad for my mental health, seeing the type of audience they fostered. I disagree that any one person has much sway in the actions of children (outside of their parents of course). I grew up in a time when kids didn't have mobile phones, (they only became somewhat commonplace around my last 2 years of highschool) and internet speeds for those who did were basically dial up so it didnt even matter if you had one. Point being is, we didn't have internet celebs and the like to influence kids and yet I was still bullied relentlessly for years for being Gay. Kids are just little assholes who want an excuse to act out and behave poorly, those same kids who bullied you would've done so regardless, idubbz was just their scapegoat. If you want an example, I'm not gay, yet I was bullied for it. Calling me gay was just the scapegoat kids used to attack me, because in my time it was acceptable to hate someone for sexual preference. Just like in idubbz time it was acceptable to call anything humour and use that to pass off judgement for your actions.

Not only did millions of impressionable teens (a big audience of edgy KZbinrs back in 2016) learn from somebody that they looked up to that saying slurs was okay, it allowed many bigots to hide their bigotry behind these sentiments. I know this is weeks old at this point, but I just want to say, I think all of the drama, the valid and the overblown, surrounding this issue aside, one of the real takeaways I think should be that it's not really up to you, or any one person, how much damage is too much in a community. At one point in this video you said something along the lines of "I dont think the damage to any individuals or the online space was so great that it really hurt anyone," but that's a huge assumption to make as an individual yourself, who has not lived other people's experiences. I think one of the biggest issues here is that most people speaking on this issue are behaving as though they have the truest insight on what is right and what is wrong, and how hurt is too hurt for someone else, without experiencing the hurt themselves. It's not really about what you or I think, and that's kinda the real point I think most sensible folks are trying to get across: there was just no reason for anyone to comment on whether the apology video was warranted or not, in any sense, because he made it from his perspective after allowing himself to more compassionately consider the perspectives of others. You dont have to be "attacking" him, it's more like awkwardly standing off to the side shaking your head condescendingly while someone expresses themselves on their own channel - it's not the most damaging thing in the world, but it's kinda just like why?

He’s not a “product” of internet culture, he quite literally was one of the major influences in it.. the target audience was kids, right? How mature and complex of decisions do you think children make? They are parrots, if you are an adult running a channel you know has a target audience of kids and you are making content that will undeniably be negatively influential. You might not have “thought” his content was damaging, and even if it wasn’t SEVERELY damaging, it was damaging! So let him apologize about it! Damn!!

Yeah I’m a good example of this as I was 11 in 2016 and I remember me and pretty much everyone I was friends with would watch people like idubbz, filthyfrank, leafy and pewdiepie(who was also in an edgy phase) I’ve pretty much grown out of it but I know some people haven’t
@perfid-deject2027 Жыл бұрын
Nope, he was a product because although he innovated with saying NF that's about all he did that innovated
@Purplestufff Жыл бұрын
I think he was both (as are all people). Nobody exists in a vacuum. Idubbbz wouldn’t have been edgy if there wasn’t already an atmosphere that allowed for that humor to exist. And then he continued and helped grow that atmosphere by himself, along with other creators at the time. This is a big part of why left-wing folks are willing to forgive him (and others) quickly. Acknowledging him being a product of his environment allows us to know what should be avoided/changed in future environments.

I know for a fact that I let my children act and behave however the screen in front of them tells them to, that way when they do something bad Im personally not responsible. Im sure there are legions of clansmen that spawned from Idubbbz that just didnt get the joke.

@@Purplestufff left wing people are willing to forgive others easily? That is quite delusional. Every other point makes sense but there is a culture of no forgiveness with left wing american ppl, its pretty obvious. People forgive idubbbz because he has a huge audience.

I hope he reads the comments on these videos. That he still does not get what he’s missing in the situation is kinda tough.

I think he's just showing that he's smarter than the majority of his viewers. Again, his point was that the people who were content copped did deserve it and that should not be apologized for. Not that the racism wasn't bad. It sucks most of his viewers don't have the iq to separate 2 points from one another.

I don't watch much of Charlie's content. But from what I can see Charlie has a personality that doesn't allow self reflection. He believes no matter what the issue is, he's always the one with the most correct viewpoint. I doubt he's going to read these comments and have an epiphany telling him he is not the person Ian's video was meant for. He's opened his mouth on the subject and we all know he's not going to shut it. He took this apology personal. Like it is strictly for him and that couldn't be further from the truth.

@@Skrunk. the point is that the apology was never addressed to Charlie so of course he thinks its stupid. If someone didnt do anything wrong TO YOU and aplogized to someone else and you jumped in like "you shouldnt apologize for nothing thats so stupid", that would be quite stupid. And charlie did that.
