I'm just disappointed how they change Mary's letter on the end of this game. We can't have women apologizing to men today lol even though that was the entire point to see how toxic the situation between the two was getting. Mary's voice acting is bad too. Original Mary's VA literally cried when she read that letter so the new one is just terrible in getting that point across. I still remember the original performance vividly two decades later but this would just be so forgettable.

Charlie, I can see why people think the combat in SH2 is clunky, but see it from this point of view. James is an average man (physically wise) he doesn’t know how to fight and I doubt he even knows how to shoot well besides “point and shoot” so when he fights he swings like it’s his last Hail Mary, and his guns sway a little cause he doesn’t know how to steady his pistol well. He’s not Leon who is a trained agent who can back flip sexily. James is just an average Joe fighting horrors beyond his comprehension

@YouYubeEnjoyerNum18 күн бұрын
@@SNP2082 It didn't. I don't know if you've played the Dead Space remake, but I have, as well as the Silent Hill 2 remake. While it's obvious that some corners were cut in the Silent Hill 2 remake, it's also clear that a lot more money was put into it. Dead Space had next to no advertising, almost no cutscenes, and the few cutscenes it does have don't feature the same high-quality MoCap and facial animations (although they are still pretty good) as Silent Hill 2, which also has an abundance of cutscenes. Meanwhile, Silent Hill 2 was advertised at multiple third-party conventions for years, with posters and graffiti in real life, as well as online and other types of ads. Konami is even paying popular live streamers in Japan to play the game, and that's really expensive. On the other hand, in Dead Space, even basic animations like Isaac's run cycle and combat animations look pretty poor by modern AAA standards (they even reused animations from the original game). So it's really not a debate, in my opinion. Silent Hill 2 had more money put into it.

Combat in horror games are a pretty complicated topic. If you lean too much into the combat and have a lot of encounters, you’ll slowly feel less scared and pay more attention to the combat itself, whether you’re ACTUALLY having fun constantly fighting. I think games like resident evil 2 remake do this really well. Combat in the police station is ill adviced due to how cramped the level is and the limited resources you have. Instead of blasting through enemies, you’re stunning and running past zombies, which is technically combat but still clenches your cheeks a little bit. I get that this isn’t resident evil but I’m just using that as an example for how to properly make engaging/scary combat.
@njmfff8 күн бұрын
Yeah, you are kinda right, but keep in mind that stunning zombies and running past them is something us veterans do. Players who are new to series or genre in general will absolutely try to kill every single zombie. Just look at Steam forum how many complain about running out of ammo early in the game. However us veterans (I assume you are as well?) kinda have this instinct to run pass most cannon fodder enemies. Heck I did this in Silent Hill remake as well for a while, it was just my instinct to avoid most of the enemies, fighting only ones that directly stand in my way or jump at me via cutscene. However enemies in this game are lot more nimble and aggressive overall, especially as games goes further and James slips further into abyss, so combat becomes unavoidable. But early game? I actually skip most of the enemies on pure instinct.

I'm in the alternative hospital rn. The atmosphere here is so thick, overwhelmingly oppressive and suffocating that I had to stop playing at some point just to catch my breath. I actually never felt that in the original (well, maybe a bit in Toluca prison, but not to such extent). This is how I know the game's good. I've always loved RE series but tbh for me, Resident Evil never came close to the best of SH games in terms of atmosphere and the feeling of pure nightmare / horror, descent into hell type of thing. And this remake is one of the best in this regards.

Also it's hard to ruin a remake as long as you're genuinely trying to recreate the game. There is a way to do this correctly where it feels awkward and difficult, restrictive and suffocating WITHOUT being a janky mess that actively de-immerses you and reminds you you’re playing a video game. That is just called bad game design. Stop the cope.

I've been a big fan of SH games for awhile and was really surprised remake turned out to be THIS good. Surely not without room for improvement, it still delivered a lot. I think they were restraint in some moments to not piss off gatekeeping strict OG fans, but I doubt adding couple more melee weapons, mechanics and features would hurt the narrative. I agree about enemy variety - they could've done more on that in the second half, maybe give even more presence to Closer/Mandarin monster, especially in Toluca Prison. Now I kinda wish to see SH1 and SH3 remakes.

I’ve not even finished the remake yet but for me it’s absolutely amazing. I ADORE Silent Hill 2, when I played the original I was obsessed with it, it is in my personal opinion the best horror game of all time. The story to this day is so freaking good. And the fact that all the enemy types and such have a meaning as to why they look the way they do, it’s phenomenal. Psychological horror at its best. I really hope with the success of this remake we might see more remakes and a real come back for Silent Hill in the same way Resident Evil has made a return.

My only complaint with the combat is the very first enemy. In the original game, when you see the first Lying Figure, it doesn't fight back at all, putting more on the psychological aspect of "Was this a real person or some creature created by the town?" Now, in the remake, the Lying Figure actually does fight back which takes away from the psychological aspects of game since we know that the enemies are related to the psychosis of James in some regard. I haven't gotten that far only because my controller now has major stick drift and I have to spend a good bit to get a new one or you know... be having James move left a lot when I'm not doing anything. But from what I've seen and heard, yeah it is really freaking good. I was hesitant cause Bloober Team haven't been good in the past with their portrayal of psychologically, mentally fucked characters and other controversies but I can say without a doubt this has been a good addition to my collection of games. (Edit:) I realized I left out something about the original that I haven't progressed far enough into the remake to see yet. In the original game, when you go back to where you killed the first enemy, there's police tape around the area blocking it off as if some horrific crime has taken place. Again, this plays into the psycho-analyzing of the characters and if what happened there really was real. That's why I started this initial complaint but I'm hoping it'll be there still in the remake.
@DementedView9 күн бұрын
Not only that but James isn't exactly cornered here, so it doesn't make sense for him to just fight. He has room to run where as in the original he would have to crawl out of the tight spot he's in.

@@LubeyZM True, I did start to look back at that. Turns out it does fight back, it's just that it takes a lot longer before it does. Either way, I still think the theory is correct that it was a real person but could just be talking out of my ass right now. Appreciate the fix however!

This is not true, it fights back and it will spit on you, it's just that it's tutorial monster meant to teach you how to fight, so they give you some slack and it takes a while for it to attack. But it will start attacking if you don't attack it first for some time.

This game was truly exceptional. However one aspect that I found less than satisfactory was the navigation. As Charlie mentioned maneuvering through certain parts of the game was quite challenging particularly the hospital section. This was the one area in the entire game that consumed a significant amount of time due to the difficulty in finding my way around. I eventually managed to progress with the aid of a KZbin video which I played alongside the game for guidance. I must admit the hospital section was quite demanding in terms of navigation. The challenge was not only in finding your way around but also in solving puzzles and locating the key passwords for these puzzles. Furthermore you had to collect various items to complete a puzzle all while fending off monsters. This was particularly difficult without the chainsaw which is only available after completing the game and starting a new game plus. Without the chainsaw it takes numerous hits to defeat some of the enemies even on the easiest difficulty level. Consequently your health is significantly depleted leaving your character on the brink of death and your screen bathed in red. This necessitates the use of a healing item as it becomes nearly impossible to discern what's on the screen. Despite the challenges posed by the hospital area I thoroughly enjoyed the game. There are far more positive aspects to appreciate than negatives. I would unequivocally recommend this game for purchase. It successfully creates an eerie and frightening atmosphere delivering a uniquely uncanny gaming experience.

They nailed sound and atmosphere. I agree that the voice acting is better. There are certain scenes in OG SH2 that are kind of cringe or just funny, like Angela asking you if you’re gonna love her towards the end. At the same time, certain scenes lost emotional impact IMO. For example, I actually like Prison Maria’s talk in the OG version more. The “I’m not your Mary” has more bite in the OG, the whole scene is more…sinister. The new VA went a different way. Another example is Mary reading her letter during the ending. In the OG, she is about to cry, you hear her voice break several times. You don’t hear this with the remake’s VA. I have more examples but I’ll stop there. Lastly, 100% agree the bosses were better than the OG. Really liked what they did with the finale, compared to the OG. Edit: I did have some stutter and like 3 spots with bad bad frame drops.

The voice acting is subjective but i have to disagree, most of the goofy aspects of the voice acting were due to lenguage barriers and limitations, and when the voice acting wasnt weird, it was one of the best that i ever heard, guy cihi for me is the only james sunderland. Specially monica morgan carried the whole show in that sense, the iconic "in my restless dream i see that town" was because of her. Tho, in sh3 most of this problems dissapear wich is why the sh3 voice acting was so good

Love the OG one, tho he gets out of breath a wee bit too easy, if you ask me. *As for the battling/fighting in this game, I surmise the fighting isn't "supposed" to be top notch, because he isn't a fighter.* The OG one got that point across .. a bit too much, with losing breath. Can't wait to play it next.

I actually prefer the original's voice acting. You can say it wasn't intentional but it had more of a surreal, uncanny vibe. Short answer: yes, if you do not care what made the original Silent Hill so great and just want a random spooky game to play. Long answer: absolutely not. the game looks and feels like any other third person over the shoulder horror game. The game is basically 90% combat encounters with the same 2 enemies (with 2 variations lol). The unsettling nature of the originals is gone. Everything feels too cinematic, too on the nose, too "clean". The voice actors, although technically "more professional" sound too generic. The uncanny, Lynchian vibes are gone and it really affects the storytelling of the game (because now you realize that the story is kinda generic and predictable lol). Bloober team also completely dropped the ball on SEVERAL key moments of the cutscenes: "Anyways? WHAT DO YOU MEAN ANYWAYS?" sounds awful in the remake. The jail scene (where you meet Maria) COMPLETELY misses the point. And the ending (where Mary reads the letter) has several sentences shortened for no reason than to apparently suck the emotions out of the ending lol. All in all: it's an ok game if you do not care about the Lynchian/atmospheric aspect of Silent Hill and just want a combat focused action horror game. Then again, why not just play the Resident Evil 4 Remake?

To match this game to the horror genre is an insult to a lot of indie devs, as well as good old PT, Visage and rare titles like those that are genuinely scary. SH felt like watching a happy disney movie, without the entertainment. The 2 monsters from The Forest look ridiculous. Combat was extremely boring. 90% of the game was looting and killing stupid looking monsters in the same repetitively designed locations and 10% of it was a seriously underwhelming, boring story. I agree about the combat for sure and how it’s never been the focal point, but even with the new mechanics, I honestly think it makes you feel pretty hopeless as well. James isn’t a super soldier or cop, he’s just a normal guy and his voice actor makes him feel so pathetic as he winces as he hits enemies. The original was definitely more or less just run away because you can’t do anything. But in this game, it really does make you feel like you have to win a fight to survive. I do agree with the enemy variety though and it should’ve probably had a bit more enemies to fight that were original to this game, but like you said, not the focal point.

I do not think any original Silent Hill 2 line delivery is off. The actors are not doing a bad job but generally a different job. They usually talk more normally than acting in movies or games usually is, where you know difference between acting, especially Japanese acting and genuine conversation. Silent Hill 2 tries with direction and even some actor choices lean to attempted normalcy of the conversations. First conversation with Angela feels disorienting because you meet a disoriented older teen in a graveyard who also just got spooked by you. There is absolutely NO house of the dead in Silent Hill 2 the original, the acting given the mold it follows is great. Some lines when delivered with this idea have much greater impact, such as Eddie's line in underground prison, delivered nonchalantly. What at most is absolutely off is some word choices that the Japanese creators insisted on like "monsters" when the actor tried to press how that word comes off much weirder and comedic outside Japan, but the word is said with excellent gusto for the situation. Nobody tries stuff like Silent Hill 2, or Final Fantasy 10's laughing scene anymore because gamers will kneejerk misunderstand the point and get bothered when they do not sound like every other TV show, movie or these days game. There absolutely is NO house of the dead in SH2 original. Only weird wording, weird situation to talk a certain way, and overall subdued version of acting, trying (Trying) to make conversations more natural in unnatural environment. It is not Final Fantasy X but house of the dead it also ain't. Not for James, not even for Laura who is a genuine child actor, not especially the quiz maker, maybe Eddies puking- Maybe that one is bit over the top.

Charlies playthrough of Silent Hill was the only playthrough I expected was actually going to be silent, every other playthrough has some form of screaming or terror. Did not disappoint.

The original sh2 voice acting isn't bad the actors can we stop with this lie holy shit

No, the old SH2 VA is bad. Have you heard old video game VA? Nobody cared how good it sounded back then. People love to think that the old voices were bad on purpose, but the truth is just that they had bad actors
@gameboycolor479 күн бұрын
@@NeverOhVer The voice acting is solid and very deliberate. I don't think it's "bad on purpose" they had very specific timings they wanted to hit with specific delivery. You can't listen to James final crack and get mad at Laura or subtly threaten Maria during one of the endings and tell me it's bad. Hell Mary's reading of the letters still kills most performances today and absolutely slaughters the new reading done at the end of Remake.

@NeverOhVer but it was on purpose, Guy Cihi was brought in even though he had no VA experience because they wanted James to sound like the average guy instead of a well known voice actor, and he was directed to say his lines in the way he does because they wanted James to sound like he was in a dream or dissociating which he technically was. Obviously Guy's performance wasn't perfect but for the most part it worked for how they intended James to be portrayed at the time
