Actually they spoke highly of the trick and how nicely it was done. Penn seemed to believe he had it figured out but couldn't find a way to verify it without disclosing the trick so they just gave him the trophy. But we never did get to find out if what Penn thought was correct or not.

its very important to note that the judges hear everything and know exactly how the tricks are done prior to the magician coming out. If penn is saying something he thinks it is, and they dont quite have everything figured out completely, it counts as a fooler. Again they are not the best magicians in the world, they are just hosting a show for entertainment. They even say this in one of the episodes.
@ineffecient82436 жыл бұрын
So for anyone curious about how this was done and why it was called, here's my armchair analysis: How the trick is done: There are 3 decks of cards . This is proven because 3x18 is about 50, and if there were only 2 stacks, one would be need to be significantly larger than the other. One is Given to Penn. One is given to teller. One is in his coat. He has the one in his coat memorized. Penn shuffles, hands the cards back, Ivan switches it for the one in his pocket and hands it out. His cards are in the following order 1XX2XX3XX4XX5XX6XX. When he hands them out 3 at a time, he guarantees 1 will be with group 1, 2 will be with group 2 etc. Now it doesn't matter how people shuffle because he will only be calling out the Xs. After all the Xs sit, he knows the last one standing from group 1 has 1, the last standing in group 2 has 2 etc and can call them out. Finally, the cello was supposed to communicate something about Penn's card but something went wrong which is why he graciously recovered. What went wrong: Penn starts off using stats to prove he knows the people standing are not randomly placed. The odds of that happening would be about 1/2000. Ivan gets confused since he is not using statistics to determine the cards nor is he taking probability into account when calling out the states. He asks if he remembered they shuffled (which would make the odds of guessing it in order 1/720 and thus showing he's not using some stats trick). Penn starts to elaborate a little mentioning he knows something about the clumping and how the clumping is not random which is a lot of information for the audience to potentially figure it out. At this point, his explanation still doesn't make much sense in the context but it gives the audience a huge clue as to what's happening. Ivan still doesn't know if he knows about the memorization or the slight of hand so he still doesn't know if they're fooled. Penn starts to basically give it the whole trick away with the back turned comment and the 18 divides line so the judges quickly cut him off and say fooled. They were not fooled, and it was not corrupt. Ivan was confused and Penn was hinting poorly before completely overstepping what he should have said. At that point, he should have approached Ivan and whispered it in his ear instead of potentially spoiling the effect and revealing his trick to millions. The judges reacted quickly (and I think fairly) by declaring them fooled and thus, giving him a second opportunity to perform again.

While the judges are talking to Allison, Penn clearly says to Teller, "I don't know what else to say to him." Meaning, he didn't want to give the whole thing away to the audience, but the magician wasn't cooperating. Had the magician been more humble in accepting Penn's hints, the judges wouldn't need to intervene. A stolen trophy.
@hemelinger77926 жыл бұрын
Blisskrieg , no. The guy behind the scene, his name is in another comment answer here somewhere and refferred to as "the judges" or "the judge" knows how the trick works and hears everything Penn & Teller say to each other. This is to prevent the magician from lying, but also from revealing too much about the whole set-up. He will sometimes rule either way. Sometimes Teller walks up to the presenter and whispers with him also. That's probably, when the judge can't call yet, because they are still on track or wants to add some drama to the show.

The shuffled cards are placed on the stool 2:36 He turns his back to the audience and at the moment when the people on stage are standing up, and are therefore distracted, he crosses his arms reaches into his sleeve and palms a handful of pre-stacked cards 2:43 The pre-stacked cards are already in his right hand as he scoops the cards off of the stool with his left hand.and then, in plain sight, he adds the pre -stacked cards to the top of the stack so that the shuffled cards are on the bottom of the deck and will not be given out. 2:47-2:50 He simply passes out the pre-stacked cards in pre-determined batches and then calls out by memory all the cards of the pre-stacked groups except for one card from each group. Of course the remaining person from each group will have the card that was purposely not called out; Not much of a trick really. No real sleight of hand.

@havanafayre5 жыл бұрын
@@patrickswayze2596 Sorry, this will be long. First, he preselected 18 states. Then he handed them out in groups. To keep it simple, let's say he handed them out in groups of 3. He gave a different number of cards to the first person in each group, but the principle is the same (he knew which cards were in each group). In his preselected deck of 18, he knew which states were in each group of 3 before he handed them out. It doesn't matter which order they are in, so mixing them as they are passed down is irrelevant. If you hand 3 cards to the first person, 3 people will end up with those cards, the order doesn't matter. Now, group 1 might have California, Washington, and Oregon. The second group might have Arizona, Texas, and Oklahoma. And so on. At first he calls out every state except 1 in each group. So he says California, Washington, Arizona, Oklahoma, and so on. This leaves one person in each group that wasn't called. He deliberately skipped them. Now he goes back and finishes the "trick". He knows that the final card from group 1 is Oregon and the final card in group 2 is Texas and so on. So, with that knowledge, he selects each person randomly and tells them the final state from the group. There's no way he could have known Penn's card, so that added detail was superfluous and bad showmanship. The only thing "great" about this trick is memorizing the states in each group. But enough practice would make it ridiculously easy. I agree with the comment that they didn't want Penn revealing the whole trick and stopped him. It didn't fool me, so I KNOW it didn't fool Penn & Teller. HTH! 👍

He handed out 3 cards to everyone 3 seats apart (six people total). Then he calls out all 18 states that he memorized from that deck beforehand. The remaining people were sitting at least 3 seats apart, so he knew what card was remaining from their group. For example, if the first group of three was given CA, NY, and WA, and he calls out CA and NY, then he knows the one person standing from that group has WA. It's why he handed out 6 groups of 3, and -- whoa -- there were six people standing at the end. The cellist was supposed to either listen for Penn only or read his lips, and then somehow play a note that gave Ivan a clue of Penn's card. The trick failed there.

I think the judges said, "Ugh, this is boring, just give him the trophy.". Penn obviously knew it as he was talking about how the remaining people standing were each part of a separate 3-card handout. Seems pretty clear he did a deck switch at the stool so he knew what states were in each 3-card group. He calls out the names of all the states he knew were dealt except for one per group. He turns and can clearly see who's left and what states they have and pretends to need to hear their voice in order to determine their card but he really already knows. This isn't controversial, it's just kinda lame. Maybe, as someone mentioned below, Penn was just too close to giving too much info away and they wanted to protect the integrity of the trick. Edit : ALSO, you should have just admitted that they had you pegged instead of sliding through on a technicality.

So just to recap, he gave out 18 preselected cards in a predetermined order to 18 people in clumps of 3; he named 2 cards from each clump; then he told each person the card he did not name from their clump... am I missing something?? Oh... and he asks Penn and teller to shuffle a deck, has penn pick a card from that deck, asks Penn to remain standing for the duration of the trick... THEN he puts the deck down on a stool (and never uses it for any part of his trick whatsoever), removes 18 different cards from his jacket pocket, and never returns to the randomly chosen card (the climax everyone was waiting for).... If he had known Penns card that would have been the only impressive element. To me this all seemed like an enormous waste of time.

Or maybe they thought that Ivan grabbed (from his jacket) and palmed another deck while he "had his back turned". When the real deck switch happened, we can see that Penn was in the middle of standing up and not looking at the stage, while Teller was looking at Penn. Magicians wouldn’t come on if they knew that what they do would be completely exposed to the public. So by not admitting it he forced them to give him the trophy. However, most of the time he chooses not to and speaks in code (which is actually pretty easy to decipher.) In this case he was right about how the grouping of cards and how the selections worked, but he was wrong about where the stacked deck came from. As I said before, he was distracted at the moment the stacked deck came into play. He was just guessing that it came out while Ivan had his back turned. The way that the show works, the "judges" actually know the full trick and how its done before the show. That's the reason they were able to rule that he was able to fool Penn and Teller. Alyson also explains at the end that the judges are able to listen in on Penn and Teller as they talk with each other after the trick is done. The judges made their ruling based off the fact that whatever Penn and Teller discussed between each other was an incorrect analysis of how the trick was actually done.

The clumps were setup with the known states and no matter how they shuffled them, once the first states were called, the remaining people standing were holding the states that he had setup for those clumps. The only thing he had to do was learn how to stack, or switch a deck and nearly all magicians know how to do that. the judges only called it because there is time limit before figuring it out due to sponsors needing their greedy airtime.

It doesn't usually go that way. Normally when there's confusion, Teller walks up to the magician and whispers directly what they think it is so the magician knows for sure if they got it or not. I feel like there was miscommunication on this trick and the judges stepped in too soon, not really following what P&T had come up with as the solution. They had nothing. Penn only had one tiny part correct. But both were clueless and judges stepped in because random guesses are not knowing how it was done. If they were allowed to randomly guess on each performance, there would be a lot less winners of this show. Probability dictates almost anyone will eventually guess as to how this was done, but that's not how this show works. Either they know or they do not. And they hadn't a clue about this illusion, trust me. This has been done before. Not as original as this performance, but Penn was not hitting the mark so to speak. Scroll the comments here for signs of how it was done. Hint: It's all about humanity's tendency to presume and assume. For without that quirk of humanity, these sorts of illusions would not work as they consistently do. Take human psychology courses if you would like to kill illusions like this for yourself. Actually, don't. I have always regretted it. That spark of "awe" was extinguished because of those courses.
@theduder26175 жыл бұрын
@@Blood0cean And your way of thinking is exactly why illusions like this work time and time again. You assume he denied Penn's guesses in order to win. But the show does not function that way at all. Penn merely was not hitting the mark. He was lobbing random guesses which is not allowed. And that is why the judges stepped in. Anyone can make guesses. Penn and Teller's jobs are to either know or not know. In this case, they simply did not know. You can learn this "trick" for yourself and fool even the smartest person you know. The answer to the question of how this was done is in this video. But just as the audience, you too looked right passed it. Apologies, but that is all you will even get from me about how this was done. Psychology courses destroyed the shine of magic for me. I refuse to extinguish that light for anyone else. So here's what I find interesting about this. So from doing my own research on how this show works I found out that the performers show the producers how the trick they perform works so that there's no lying or cheating involved when Penn explains what he thinks. That being said, the judges would've have only made the decision they made if Penn and Teller's decision was in fact the wrong one, which it technically was. From what I can tell, the judges made their because Penn and Teller didn't notice the move where he gets the cards form the stool and thought the card selection was achieved through some other means. I don't think this is a really controversial trick, just one with a nice slight of hand move that went unnoticed. I think what Penn was thinking was something along the lines of the cards given out were the card only one of them shuffled or something like that.

@flipitgood25 жыл бұрын
@@SniperLogic The structure of the reveal makes the shuffle irrelevant. He handed out sets of three, and then called two of them in the blindfold roll call. For example, he knew that he had handed three cards to the guy in blue in the leftmost front chair: Connecticut, Nevada, and New Mexico. He Kept one and the next two guys got the other two. While blindfolded he called Nevada and New Mexico. This makes two of those three guys sit down, and whichever one of those three was left must have Connecticut in the final reveal. Penn talking about statistics and clumping was code that he recognized that there was exactly one card left from each set handed out, resulting in the final six having exactly one person from the left, the right, and the middle trios of each row, whereas a truly random distribution of the six final cards could endup heavy on a row or end compared to the other.

To everyone commenting on Illinois starting to sit down early:. This is not sneaky, underhanded, or a mistake. It's not even technically an editing mistake. Here's what happened: For whatever reasons the producers or director did a reshoot. After the performance was finished, they got everyone back in their places and did a second take of that part of the trick. Illinois isn't a plant. He doesn't know in advance for purposes of the trick, but he does know that he's next because this is at least the second time he's done it. At the end of taping, it's common to go back and reshoot scenes with errors or just because the director wants to do something different. That's the most likely explanation. Alternatively, he might just have been confused or forgotten his state, or just out of reflex, started to sit because the guy beside him did. If you live somewhere with light-controlled crosswalks, how many times have you started to cross--without looking at the light or traffic--just because the person next to you started to cross?

Penn and Teller both missed the switch 2:49. Penn is asked to stand up, he puts something on the desk to the right, while Teller has his head turned a bit to the right. In that very moment the switch happens. But in the end IMO Penn was correct about clustering the cards, shuffle doesn't matter, because they know that there are 6 groups of 3 cards. So shouting out 12 of them ( 2 from each group) leaves him with just 6 states, distributed in the way the magician handed the card groups. Teller's card that remained in his pocket doesn't have anything to do with the trick, because of the switch. Only Penn's card had to be heard or mouth read by the woman with the cello, who needed to play a specific sound, but that failed IMO.

I believe I have the explanation: P&T knew there was a deck switch, they knew everything about handing out the predetermined packages (clumps of 3 cards), they knew how the trick was done and everything else Aaron DeVandry mentioned. But the problem was in the focus. They didn't "catch" him. They weren't able to precisely determine the exact moment when he fooled them. They knew "how", but not "when", and thus Amodei fooled them according to the rules of this game. They focused on the idea that Amodei switched the decks when he was turned around (meaning, he grabbed his prearranged deck from his jacket pockets and made a switch, when in fact, he had taken the second deck from the stool). He combined the decks in palms of his hands, making it all look like one unique deck. The moment when he just put the shuffled deck into his pockets is completely irrelevant in this case, because P&T missed that causative part of the method. If they happened to mention ANYTHING about the stool, Amodei would have to step back, or judge would do that instead of him. But they said absolutely nothing about the stool, they sticked to the sleight of hand when he had his back turned, when in fact, he just covered up his previous move and finished the method to the end. They thought him being turned was the beginning of the sleight of hand, when in fact it had already finished with that part being the last one in the method and simply being the finisher move. P&T can't possibly say they haven't been fooled if they were only aware of the finisher part. They completely missed the stool. You see by the Amodei's reaction that he knows he "has them cornered", because he is very well aware of the rules of the game. He is aware of the fact that they are not mentioning anything about the stool, as they are being completely focused on the moment when he had his back turned. Thus the overrule by the judge. He fooled them. He really did and they all know it.

@Thomas King Penn understood how the prediction part worked, he just didn't understand how he got from a shuffled deck to the ordered groups of cards. His guess of a deck switch while Ivan's back was turned to them was wrong.
@techgeek33665 жыл бұрын
Takes the shuffled deck from Penn. Puts it on chair. Takes it off chair at 2:49 and turns back, making the switch. Hands switched prepared group of cards to people at the back row, in groupings. Calls out the names of states, from his memory of the groups, so that only one state in each group is left (as per Caroline Perez, below)
@labla89403 жыл бұрын
Cards were divided into 6 groups only showed him passing out 3 groups but you can see at end him handing a stack to lady front right (deception camera work) Each group was to pass 4 cards + - to their left so each group had 1 person remaining he knew CT AL HI NY were all the control states He knew each group had that control group so he knew front 1st in line had to have CT because other 3 were seated and he knew all cards in every group. Notice if you break the groups down every standing person was in one of the 6 groups 6 groups of 4 he knw every card in every group so he named 3 of the 4 states in each group leaving only one possible State that person standing would have. Penns stack had all the remaining states not in the stacked deck or control deck hence the 24 people plus the 1 half of 50 states Thats why he didnt know Penns State

I think this 'controversy' misses the point. The point is that this is a showcase for magicians to show off their skills. Whether or not they fool Penn & Teller, is not nearly as important as the showcase to demonstrate their skills to a large audience. That being said, there are two magicians behind the scenes, Johnny Thompson and Mike Close, who Penn describes as some of the best magical minds in the world, who work with the magicians ahead of time to make sure their act is shown in the best possible light. In doing so, they likely see how it is done, or see enough to figure it out. P&T do not see this, so that they are seeing exactly what we see. However, in a case like this where P&T say they think they know how the trick us done, but allude to a method other than the one used, these judges have every right to step in and say, "No, that is not the way this was done." Controversial? Not really; it's just P&T's way of trying to keep everything fair; which is one of the reasons they are so highly respected.

Just a lesson in accreditation and candor: Ivan Amodei, you should *always* give credit to people who feature prominently throughout your performance. I am aware that this show is about magicians, but you specifically said that the "cello creates a soundtrack to the show and just allows you to get into the feeling that I want you to have about the illusion that is coming". That means the *nameless cellist plays a major role in your performance and needs to also be given credit for the illusion itself (as you have implied).

Yeah that was pretty upsetting. It was so bizarre to just refer to someone as "a cellist" rather than credit them properly

1) Clearly Teller also took a card but the magician didn't say what his card was. 2) He said there was one state card for every state in the country (50) BUT he only calls out 18 of the guests states but since it seemed to go bad couldn't tell Penn's state by saying you are correct. What happened to the rest of the cards? The cards aren't checked so I'm guessing when he turns his back he changes decks to one that only has the 18 states so he knows them all. I don't know how he was able to point out which person had which of each grouping of 3 states correctly.
@musicalwarrior90795 жыл бұрын
He grabbed 18 cards that were in order and put them on top of the deck when he grabbed the deck from the stool, and then handed out the cards in groups of 3. He knew what cards were in each group of 3, and called out at least 2 of each group of 3, leaving 6 remaining cards/spectators. Each of the remaining 6 were separated into a different group of 3 so he knew what card remained in that specific group of 3. I hope that makes sense.

Interesting trick, Ivan, and thanks for sharing it officially on KZbin. I have a couple of suggestions for the presentation: 1. The premise is the ability to tune in to particular voices. It would be nice if you made every participant say something before the trick so you got to know their voices, at least have them say their names. (Maybe not allowed by the producers here due to time constraints) 2. The blindfold after they shouted the state seems very unnecessary, as seeing the participants then would not give you any additional information. 3. Although the chat with the last standing participants has a bit of humor, it seems to be based on the idea that they would have the accent of the state on their card, which does not really make any sense at all. I think having them say the name of a couple of possible states would have better supported the idea of being able to recognize their voices.

They knew exactly how it was done but didn't want to hurt your trick by telling everyone out there. It really sucks that the "Judges" decided for them. This is only Controversial because I hardly believe anyone will believe for a second that they didn't know what you did.
