Thank you for the awesome video. Very easy to follow. I also really appreciate the time to take to answer all comments and offer help to others. In that spirit, I'd like your opinion on my Battle 2 6000. The reel has seen very little use over time and recently has become my work horse. I recently cleaned and greased it using this video. It was perfect before I started and everything inside appeared to be in perfect condition. After reassembling I noticed a slight issue. The entire handle assembly is rock solid. However if I grab the handle at its base, next to where it meets the side plate, and I push straight in or pull straight out, I feel some play. Not a wobble. No grinding, just some very slight movement straight in and out. I put the handle on the right side and it still happens on the right side. Have you every experienced this? Any suggestions on a fix? Add an additional shim? You have 4 shims on your reel. I only had one. Or might it be one or two of the bearings on either side of the main gear? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for all you do..
@TSGReelService2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! If you're not having any issues with the way the gearing feels, then the reel is fine. Most reels have some handle play. If you're having a """geary" feel when you crank, play with the shims.

What is your view on greasing Carbon Fiber drag washers. Most people seem to have the view that they should be greased as it will keep them flexible and less likely to get brittle and break, therefore they will last longer. Also I have read that greasing will lower the initial friction or force required to start the drag moving and therefore improve drag performance. Also greasing will prevent or impede corrosion, important in saltwater. I have noticed that not all manufacture's do this and some recommend this but their reels often come from the factory with little or no grease. Most likely Quality Control issue at the factory.
@TSGReelService2 жыл бұрын
Hey John! I think most of the points you make are valid,.... it all boils down to whether or not you want smoother startup (and range) or greater top end drag. Personally, I prefer greasing my CF's, since I rarely ever have to max out the drag.

I recently used your video to overhaul and repair my Battle II 4000. The reel had two years of heavy freshwater use, the "Pivot Arm" got worn due to heavy use and due to the fact the bail arm assembly was not greased much at the factory, it wore to the point that the "Pivot Arm" was jumping out of it's track. I replaced both the "Bail Arm" and "Pivot Arm" and it works properly again. The problem I have now is that after cleaning and greasing the reel, the reel was fairly smooth but after several hours of use in the cold Canadian winter the reel got very stiff, I assumed that I had used too much grease so I opened the reel again and removed as much excess clumps of grease as I could leaving just a good coating on all the parts. Now the reel turns even more smooth, but after leaving in the cold for several hours develops some slight stiffness. Is this due to just new fresh grease ? I use Penn reel grease just like the factory. The parts are installed correctly and the reel is nice and smooth at room temperature. I have a Battle II 5000 which has seen little use and has never been overhauled, factory grease which was also put in the cold for the same time. It does not develop any stiffness after cold exposure, Also I noticed that at room temperature the 5000 is slightly smoother (less stiff) than the 4000, is this because the gears on the 4000 are more worn after 2 years than the 5000 which is almost new ? Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thank You.

Thanks for the excellent explanation of what you're experiencing. I suspect it may be your bearings are the issue. Check out my video on bearing cleaning and try using no more than 3 drops of TSI321 per bearing. I would probably add a little more grease back to the gears to be on the safe side. You should also check your a/r clutch to ensure it has some lubrication on the silver cylinders inside ... not too much... a few drops will work. Hope this helps. If you're still having trouble shoot me an email (tsgreelservice@gmail.com) referencing this conversation, along with your name and phone number and I'll give you a call.

I usually get spinning reels that look like they were drug in the sand left in the ocean, service is a nightmare when it comes in my shop. I tell customers that I will charge by the hour for cleanup and then charge for servicing. I am getting tired of cleaning up someone's neglected equipment. How do you feel about that situation?
@TSGReelService3 жыл бұрын
Altough it may be frustrating, and even sad, sometimes, without those customers, repair shops would be non-existent. I try to remind myself of that when I slip down that path. Charging by the hour is tricky because they have to trust that it took as long as you say it did to clean. You may want to consider charging a flat rate for those circumstances. They'll understand... it's not like they don't know their reels are in bad shape. After all, they brought it to you. 🙂 I can only record and post about 5 to 10% of the reels I get in, due to time constraints and deliverables... since many of the reels I get are similar to what you experience. It's all part for the course.

Question my battle 2 4000 bail is very easy to flip over and i have successfully removed the automatic bail trip but is there something i can do about the bail flipping over easy maybe buy a stronger spring or if i am wrong can you recommend me what to do
@TSGReelService2 жыл бұрын
Hi Brandon, if it's a battle 2, you've probably had it a while, so replacing the spring (assuming nothing else is wrong) should help. You can also try stretching the spring (new or used) to add another millimeter or two to it. Going bail-less is also an option, by cutting the wire, but you'll need to add weight to the pivot side. Hope this helps.

@TSGReelServiceАй бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video. If the section of the reel in question is metal, I use heat and CorrosionX to penetrate deep down the screw threads. Some service guys report having success with slightly tightening the screw first and then trying to back it out, but I haven't had much luck with that. If your screw is in an area that's not metal, try just soaking the area for 24 to 72 hours with CorrosionX (or WD-40 or the like) to penetrate the threads.

I just opened up a friends 4000 Batt 2. It was making just awful noise,rumble etc.. I found the lower pinion bearing frozen,upper pinion bearing noisy. Tried soaking the bearings in mineral spirits and actually got the smaller bearing quieted down,and then some TSI321 made it silent.So even though the other bearing was noisy,I reinstalled the pinion,bearings,clutch etc,,put the screws back,,and just turning the pinion gear by hand it feels lousy,,even worse when I put the whole reel back together and cranked the handle. I am assuming it’s the bearing making it feel and sound so nasty. Do you think it could be anything else besides the bearing,or bearings? Could the clutch be making that noise and rumble? I wouldn’t think it’s that,being the anti reverse is working..any thoughts?
@TSGReelService4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Assuming you reinstalled everything correctly, based on everything you said, it sounds like the bearings. You should also check the a/r.... all 3 may need replacing. You can change one thing at a time (e.g. - worse of the two bearings and so on) to help identify the culprit(s).
@richieg84324 жыл бұрын
@@TSGReelService How can it be the A/R? In my experience,I only know of faulty A/Rs allowing the reel to turn backward. How would it produce that noise? Don’t the bearings in the clutch stay still when being cranked? I am confused. Is there a way to check the A/R without replacing it?

Hi, I wanted to please ask about the reel I have: Penn Sargus 8000. I disassembled it to clean and grease, I put everything back in place exactly and for some reason when I turn the handle it is a bit stiff compared to before the grease. I did not press the screws too hard and not too weak, everything is just right. I wanted to please ask if you have an idea what it could be ? Is this something common or did I do something wrong ? Thanks in advance and much appreciation
@TSGReelService3 жыл бұрын
Hi Y L. Reels can be a little funny sometimes. They work fine before disassembly and then not after reassembly... even if you do it correctly. If your reel was dry inside, you should expect the crank to feel a little more sluggish after adding grease. However, I know this isn't what you're referring to... just wanted to point that out. 🙂 For your situation, I suspect you'll need to play with the shims on the main gear.... try removing one of them and seeing how it feels. Still tight? Try removing a second and retrying, etc. You want to play with the shims until the reel cranks nicely without the reel feeling rough or has rough spots. Hope this helps for your current situation and possible future ones.
